Fifth Wall Preps New EP from Alis with Ital and Matrixxman Remixes

Formerly known as Subeena, Berlin-via-London producer Sabina Plamenova (pictured above) will release her next EP via Brooklyn’s Fifth Wall label under current moniker Alis. With releases for Don’t Be Afraid and Astro:Dynamics already under her belt, Plamenova’s forthcoming Apache EP will offer two new productions alongside remixes from Brooklyn mainstay Ital and ascending San Francisco talent Matrixmann. Before the four-track effort drops on Monday, April 21, the artwork and tracklist for Alis’ Apache EP can be found below.

Howson’s Groove “Shake Up (Arkist Remix)”

Originally set to drop in late March, the new effort from London pair Howson’s Groove will now see a release next week. Closing the duo’s upcoming four-track Body & Soul EP is this remix from Bristol producer Arkist (pictured above), who scoops out the sleeker elements from the original track in order to shape his rework into a rawer bit of low-swung, jazzy house. In addition to Arkist’s effort, “Shake Up” and the rest of Howson’s Groove’s forthcoming Body & Soul EP can be previewed after the jump.

Flava D Readies New EP for Champion’s Formula Label, Shares Title Track

Part of grime’s new school, Rinse and Butterz affiliate Flava D has announced that her next record will actually arrive via Formula, the growing label operated by fellow London DJ/producer Champion. The three-track In the Dance EP is set to feature solely original productions from the burgeoning artist, all of which are described as “heavy-duty dancefloor weaponry full of arpeggiated synthlines, peeling sub-bass, and weighty 4×4 rhythms.” Flava D’s digital release will be available exclusively on Juno as of May 12, with the full release arriving May 19. Watch the Sleazy New Video for Todd Terje’s “Leisure Suit Preben”

Todd Terje has been all over the internet this week. Following the release of his debut full-length, It’s Album Time, various press outlets—ourselves included—have been essentially lining up to say how wonderful it is. Today, the Norwegian producer has stoked the flames even further by issuing an entertaining new video for album cut “Leisure Suit Preben.” The clip, which is billed as a “sort of official video,” introduces “Preben,” who is described as “a singer, dancer, and party animal from Carl Berner plass, Oslo.” Directed by Espen Friberg & Emil Høgset, the amusing piece follows Preben as he drunkenly stumbles through town and ultimately winds up at a joyously sleazy nightspot. “Leisure Suit Preben” can be viewed below.

Know V.A. “Donkey Kong (Rabit Remix)”

Amsterdam duo Know V.A. (a.k.a. Marijn Brussaard & Feico De Muinck Keizer) recently released its O Horizon EP via Lowriders Collective, and has now passed along its acerbic-yet-alluring album closer. The Houston-based grime producer Rabit seems to care less how rhythms can work together on his version of “Donkey Kong,” and focuses more on how individual trajectories can foster an uncanny and captivating sonic landscape. His production continues the original’s minimalist approach, adding to the mix a shrill and quivering synth that quite nearly overpowers the simple beat bouncing underneath. The erratic tempo of “Donkey Kong (Rabit Remix)” is further complicated by disjointed clicks and taps that circulate until the track concludes unexpectedly with a continuous hum of white noise.

Stream West Norwood Cassette Library’s ‘Missing You’ EP

“It’s soul time down at the Cassette Library,” the accompanying press release to West Norwood Cassette Library‘s forthcoming Missing You EP boasts. Before its release next month, though, XLR8R readers can get a better idea of what exactly “soul time” at WNCL really sounds like, as London DJ/producer/label head Bob Bhamra’s latest effort is now available to stream in full.

Missing You offers four sample-strewn, no-bullshit house tracks, each of which incorporates pieces of vintage disco into their dancefloor-aimed rolls. Set to arrive on May 5, West Norwood Cassette Library’s Missing You EP can be streamed in full via the player below.

Watch a New Documentary on the Rise and Fall of UKG’s Golden Era

The result of a partnership between Dazed and BBC’s Channel 4, the new Brandy & Coke documentary chronicles the rise and fall of UK garage’s golden era. Spanning just over 20 minutes, the in-depth film looks back at the roots of the UKG scene, following its evolution from club nights, to pirate radio, to the rise of the garage MC, and on through to its commercial explosion. Featuring garage luminaries MC Creed, Ashley Walters, Wookie, PSG, and Kano, among others, Brandy & Coke collects a good deal of insight from the various promoters, DJs, MCs, producers, and party-goers who help shaped the genre over the years.

Rambow “Shadows/Ice Melt Fiya”

19-year-old New York-based producer Rambow has managed to cut through the clamor with his fresh “Shadows/Ice Melt Fiya” track. Featuring two very distinct segments, the production’s first half maintains a lethargic energy, with an emphasis on throwback keys that circle around soulful arpeggios, R&B vocal snippets, and a relaxed-but-cavernous bassline. At nearly the exact halfway point (which is marked with a record scratch), the closing portion of Rambow’s track rapidly switches into a jungle-infused tune with a metallic, hollowed-out synth clanging to the beat. The new sound palette is backed by the same groaning low end as before, albeit ramped up to an exceedingly accelerated pace and overlayed by rapid vocal samples that only grow in intensity.

Call Super Preps New 12″ for Houndstooth; Preview It Now

Berlin-based producer Joe Seaton (a.k.a. Call Super) will release a new 12″ via London’s excellent Houndstooth label next month. The forthcoming two-track release comes with only a few cryptic clues in its accompanying press release. “City weight cut loose with forgetfulness. Empty head every time I enter. Wire maze got combed,” it reads before offering “respect” to Katharina Grosse, a visual artist who Seaton wanted to mention for no apparent reason.

Houndstooth’s own site provides a bit more info, however, indicating that Call Super’s “Depicta” b/w “Acephale II” will find the burgeoning talent “further exploring texture, dynamics, and melody within a techno framework,” in a vein similar to his other releases for the label. Set to drop on May 19, Seaton’s upcoming 12″ can currently be previewed here.

Download New Mixes from DJ Haus and Mumdance

Two very different-but-equally enticing mixes hit the internet to stream and download today: A 22-track workout of a session from Unknown to the Unknown boss DJ Haus and an Egyptian-themed mixtape from relentlessly busy Londoner Mumdance (pictured above).

The latter of the two arrived as the latest podcast from Dummy, and finds the DJ/producer—who has had no shortage of appearances on XLR8R lately—chronicling his recent trip to Cairo (organized by the British Council) through field recordings, the local sounds of Mahraganat music, and his own brand-new productions inspired by the region. That 30-minute recording can be found below, along with its tracklist, and Mumdance’s accompanying interview with Dummy can be read here.
