Last month, the ever-active Unknown to the Unknown label continued its musical onslaught with the release of a collaborative 12″ from POL Style, Vin Sol & Matrixxman. Brimming with hyperactive energy, the four-song effort is loaded with jacking rhythms—one of which, EP cut “MZJACKIE,” was offered up as a free giveaway via our Downloads section—and now, lead song “Angry Frogz” has been blessed with an appropriately insane video. In terms of premise, there isn’t much to the clip, but somehow, the brightly colored visuals, most of which center around dental care—yes, a raving tube of toothpaste is involved—are unusually compelling. Combined with some kaleidoscopic imagery and, true to the song’s title, a handful frogs (both real and animated), the track’s bubbling beats really shine. The “signature sound” of Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records imprint has been joyously hard to pin down since its inception, with the label anchoring itself in the world of abstract beats as much as it is unafraid to venture into lopsided noise, refracted house, musique concrete, and, in the case of a forthcoming record from M. Geddes Gengras, sprawling ambient expeditions. Set to appear in vinyl, CD, and digital form (note Leaving Records’ usual cassette format has been left out here), the LA artist’s Ishi LP will offer a series of elongated synth expeditions. M. Geddes Gengras’ work is described as being “based in modular synthesis, [while] comfortably straddling a variety of forms and remaining rooted in a deep affinity for the limitations of analog electronics and a keen ear for timbral manipulation.”

Named after Ishi, “the last wild Indian” who appeared at the age of 49 in 1911 North America as a complete outsider to the modern world, the effort’s three tracks (with a bonus cut in the CD/digital packages) are said to be inspired by what the artist describes as, “the schism that exists between the world we live in and those stuck on the margins of it—perpetual outsiders and their quest to understand the torrent of information they are constantly subjected to.” M. Geddes Gengras’ Ishi will see a full release on June 24, but in the meantime, the forthcoming record’s artwork and tracklist are included below.

Released this week, The Body’s nightmareish I Shall Die Here LP for RVNG, which was co-created with Tri Angle affiliate The Haxan Cloak, is a compelling example of how sonic landscapes can forge incredibly visceral and ardent narratives. Inspired by that new album, Jason Evans directed a short film conceived around the music’s “incredibly visual account of death, tragedy, and loss.” He goes on to say, “I had this image of a man, his face covered in dirt, but his arms still moving and his eyes open.” The results of those ideas are now available to watch online.

Evans’ piece features a dishevelled man living in a remote cabin surrounded by thick forests, following him as he attempts to collect pieces of his memory amidst relentless weather conditions. All the while, merciless cuts from I Shall Die Here can be heard in the soundtrack. Having been compared to Robert Smithson’s parallels “between geological change and the fragility of the mind,” At the Mercy of It All can be seen in the player below.

Pets Recordings, the label run by enduring Polish duo Catz n Dogz, will continue with its ongoing compilation series later this month, releasing the third entry of Friends Will Carry You Home. Packed with 18 tracks from the likes of Axel Boman (pictured above), KiNK, Tom Demac, Catz Eats Dogz (a.k.a. Eats Everything and Catz n Dogz), and several others, the package will be sold as a triple-vinyl box set and a bone-shaped USB drive before seeing a digital release as three separate EPs. Friends Will Carry You Home III is set to drop the vinyl, USB, and first digital EP on May 5, with the second and third digital EPs set for release on May 12 and May 19, respectively. Roughly a year and a half after the first installment of its Tannhauser Acid Works 12″ series, burgeoning Scottish duo Clouds has returned with a second edition of “Analord-style acid breaks” for Turbo. Tannhauser Acid Works II is set to drop on vinyl and digital formats on April 28, and is described as offering “high-grade, head-shredding hardcore” across its three eclectic productions.
