Download a New Mix from Nicolas Jaar

Crafted as a tribute to John Lennon on the 33rd anniversary of his death, Nicolas Jaar‘s Our World mix isn’t exactly what people might expect from an average DJ set, as the widely popular and inventive artist turned in something closer to a free-form audio collage. The hour-long session is riddled with warped versions of the legendary pop star’s music, lulls of contemplative ambiance, found sound recordings, and other seemingly random, unnamed tracks curated by the young, New York-based Jaar. Our World can be streamed and downloaded for free in the player below. (via Dummy)

NYC Club Night The Bunker Launches Record Label, Previews First Release

After celebrating its tenth anniversary earlier this year, renowned NYC techno night The Bunker is set to launch a new record label next month. Operating under the same name, The Bunker imprint will release its inaugural 12″ on January 13 of next year—dropping a three-track effort from Michael Hopkins (a.k.a. Leisure Muffin), a regular guest of the party. “I think it’s the weird music we present that oozes through the cracks and doesn’t fit into simple genre categories that somehow defines The Bunker and sets us apart,” party/label head Bryan Kasenic told Resident Advisor in a recent interview. He continues, “The label will be a true reflection of this, as we release music from characters who lurk in the shadows of the party alongside established past guests who inspire us.” Before The Bunker officially gets the ball rolling, Leisure Muffin’s plainly titled The Bunker New York 001 EP can be previewed below and pre-ordered via the label’s Bandcamp.

Download a New Mix from Om Unit

London producer Jim Coles (a.k.a. Om Unit) has followed up his bass-focused debut LP, Threads, with a brand-new mix of similiar juke- and jungle-referencing sounds. Recorded in Coles’ home, the artist describes his mix as “a representation of the kind of 160/170 BPM realm that I’ve been tirelessly banging the drum for the past two years or so” and “a representation of the family circle within that world.” Featuring the likes of Ital Tek, Boxcutter, Mark Pritchard, Goldie, Tessela, and assorted cuts from Coles himself, the hour-long mix is a heady, turbulent blend of drum & bass and footwork. Om Unit’s Resident Advisor podcast can be downloaded here, where a quick Q&A with the artist can also be found.

Check Out Pangaea’s Remix of Jon Hopkins

It was just last week when we learned that busy UK producer Jon Hopkins (pictured above) was preparing to issue an extended version of his excellent Immunity LP, with remixes from the likes of Luke Abbot, Nosaj Thing, Happa, and Hessle Audio cohort Pangaea joining the album’s original tracklist. And now that Immunity (Extended Edition) is available as an iTunes exclusive, “Collider (Pangaea Remix)” is available to stream in full. The crunchy, meditative production pulses along with a decidedly heavy thump. Pangaea seems to borrow only a few choice elements from Hopkins’ original track, and transforms the finely detailed “Collider” into something altogether more brash and oppressive. The entirety of “Collider (Pangaea Remix)” can be heard below.

Max Cooper Announces Debut Album, Shares Lead Single

Coming off a prolific year which saw him release a four-track EP and remixes for the likes of Nils Frahm, understated London tunesmith Max Cooper has announced his debut LP, Human. Dropping on March 10, 2014 via FIELDS, the album is said to “represent an explosive leap into the full-length format for an artist who previously preferred to work in miniature,” and will feature guest appearances from Belleruche‘s Kathrin DeBoer and frequent collaborator BRAIDS. Available on December 16, Human‘s lead single, “Adrift,” is a slab of organic, seductive techno with downcast piano chords and a tender vocal performance from DeBoer. A stream of “Adrift,” as well as Human‘s full tracklist and artwork, can be found below.

Animal Chuki “Capicua”

Peruvian electronic group Animal Chuki thinks of music in terms of pure instinct, wearing animal masks and creating sounds reminiscent of tropical environments. “Capicua,” the title track lifted from the group’s brand-new EP for Buenos Aires label ZZK, accentuates these primal ideas with sampled saxophone licks, buzzing pads, and percussion-heavy cumbia grooves. Animal Chuki unravels its production into a flurry of sustained horns and hollow-sounding toms, all of which is deeply drowned in reverb before being expelled into a sudden conclusion.

Theo Parrish Readies 12″ for Trilogy Tapes

After a bit of online speculation, it has been confirmed today that iconic Detroit artist Theo Parrish will release a brand-new 12″ via The Trilogy Tapes before the year is through. In conjunction with London skateboard brand Palace and Parrish’s own Sound Signature label, the rising Trilogy Tapes imprint will issue three of the DJ/producer’s new tracks on December 20. The tracklist and artwork for the 71st & Exchange Used To Be… 12″ can be found below, where a clip of its music is also available. (via Juno Plus)

Houndstooth Releases Remix Comp Featuring Special Request, Akkord, and More

It has been quite a big year for Fabric-affiliated label Houndstooth, having released a slew of quality releases from the likes of Akkord, Special Request, Call Super, and many others. To cap off its impressive run, the imprint has released a special remix EP which finds its catalog of artists remixing one another’s tunes. Called HTH vs. HTH, the record is something that label A&R Rob Booth says he’s “wanted to do to give something back to the people who’ve been buying the [label ‘s] records,” in order to give them “some new and exclusive music that would tie off the year and release something that will act as an affordable label sampler to introduce casual listeners to other Houndstooth artists.” Houndstooth’s new compilation features new productions from House of Black Lanterns, shadowy techno duo Akkord, Paul Woolford’s Special Request moniker, Call Super, Second Storey, _Unsubscribe_, and Throwing Snow’s Snow Ghosts project. HTH vs. HTH can be previewed and purchased at a very low cost from the Houndstooth website, here; streaming clips can be found below.

XLR8R’s Best of 2013: Features

Last week, XLR8R kicked off its Best of 2013 content by offering up a list of the year’s most popular tunes from our Downloads section. Without question, the free downloads are some of the most easily digestible content on the site—which undoubtedly helps to explain why readers like them so much—but their popularity doesn’t mean that we’ve lost our love for meatier articles. After all, XLR8R began as a print publication, and our drive to dig deeper, ask questions, and put together thorough, detailed articles hasn’t been lost. Each week, XLR8R publishes at least two or three long-form features, and now that the end of the year is right around the corner, we’ve looked back and selected what we think are the 10 best of the bunch. On top of that, we’ve also checked our database and calculated which 10 features were the most popular with our readers.

Top 10 XLR8R Features: Editors’ Picks
