Los Angeles beatsmith Mndsgn just dropped a limited cassette called Breatharian via Fresh Selects, and today the artist shares a video made in collaboration with the label and Portland design group The Pressure. The visuals for “Hiking / Fif Dim” detail a lone female character who thumbs through a Mndsgn zine and suddenly finds herself in a packed nightclub, engulfed in the zine’s patterned visuals. Taking advantage of the mood shift between these cuts, “Hiking”‘s mellow piano lounging segues naturally into the hazy beat-funk of “Fif Dim.” The well-crafted piece appears before Fresh Selects drops Indeia, the companion to Mndsgn’s recent EP, later this month.
Levon Vincent Announces Open Call for Artist Apprenticeship in Berlin

New York-bred house stalwart and consistent XLR8R favorite Levon Vincent has taken to Facebook to announce an open call for artists to submit their demos in hopes of landing a sponsored apprenticeship from the hard-working, experienced DJ/producer in Berlin. “Things are optimistic for me for at least a year or two,” Vincent states in his post. “I am ready to start sponsoring/apprenticing people. Maybe one musician at a time. Let’s develop something.”
After further fleshing out his ideas for this project, the artist goes on to say that he aims to facilitate “24/7 music making,” and then asks for producers to send two demo tracks as SoundCloud links to [email protected] with “Bootcamp” in the subject line. He elaborates, saying, “Three months should be enough time [for you] to learn a thing or two. Think of it as bootcamp. You must be completely committed to your craft. Anything else is secondary, and I’ll know immediately from the first beat of your demo, so don’t front!” Vincent’s entire post can be read here.
Sigha Preps New EP; Preview It Now

London DJ/producer Sigha is set to drop a new batch of material via Our Circula Sound, marking the artist’s first release since his debut long-player, Living with Ghosts, appeared on Hotflush late last year. The upcoming A Series of Desecrations is said to offer four tracks of “machine hum and fuzzed noise against a backdrop of brutalist techno and beat sketches.” Before Sigha’s new EP sees a release on December 9, its four original efforts can be previewed below.

Graze “Skip/Crush (Glass House VIP Mix)”

Up-and-coming production duo Graze dropped its debut LP, Edges, via New Kanada just this week, but Christian Andersen and Adam Marshall are already back at it, releasing this “Glass House VIP” version of percussive album opener “Skip/Crush” as a free download. The pair’s reworking of its new track does away with a fair amount of the astral atmosphere, and instead focuses on the sterilized drum patterns and looming bass weight in addition to a few spritely keyboard chords. It all makes for an interestingly meditative counterpart that thankfully maintains Graze’s trademarked dancefloor skip. Anyone interested in grabbing “Skip/Crush (Glass House VIP Mix)” as a WAV file can do so after the jump.
Jon Hopkins Readies Extended Edition of ‘Immunity’, Announces Remix EP, Shares New Video

Entering its eighth year, wintery Montreal festival Igloofest has released details for its 2014 program, which takes place over four weekends. Tickets for the festival start selling on December 10, and the full schedule will be spread over the four weekends between January 16 and February 8, 2014; a more detailed lineup can be viewed here.
Bondax Shares First Single from Upcoming Debut LP

The young UK upstarts and former XLR8R podcast contributors of Bondax have shared a full stream of “Fires,” a warm, vocal-led cut said to come from the pair’s forthcoming debut LP. Featuring London vocalist Josh Record, the sweetly languid “Fires” is a bit less dancefloor-friendly than most might expect, coming in more along the lines of a soul-dripping slow-jam than the summery house music Bondax is better known for. Though no other details have surfaced as of yet, the tune is said to come from the pair’s upcoming debut full-length, which will land sometime in 2014. In the meantime, “Fires” can be streamed in full below.
David Rodigan Helms Upcoming ‘Masterpiece’ Mix Album

Legendary British broadcaster and sound clash DJ David Rodigan will helm the next edition of Ministry of Sound‘s Masterpiece mix album series. Set to drop at the beginning of next year, the three-disc collection is said to map the reggae icon’s decades-long musical journey, “starting with his initiation into the sounds of ’60s British pop and American soul, and passing through four decades of the evolution of Jamaican music in all its guises: ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, and the new roots revival.” Before Rodigan’s contribution to the Masterpiece series sees an official release on January 27, the collection’s artwork and complete tracklist can be found below.

Nils Frahm “You (Teen Daze Remix)”

Piano virtuoso Nils Frahm finished his year with a solid album of live “field recordings,” Spaces, and today, Vancouver producer Teen Daze shows appreciation for Frahm favorite “You” with this minimal rework. Setting a plaintive piano refrain against organic, lilting percussion and ambience, Teen Daze doesn’t overwhelm the source material with unnecessary bombast. Instead, the artist honors the original composition with humble drums, bass, and synth atmosphere, making for a love-letter collaboration of sorts.
Video Premiere: ALAK “Ilial Clone”
Recently signed Warp producer patten doesn’t just create genre-skewing music, he also releases it for other artists through his Kaleidoscope label. That project’s latest cassette (also available as a free download) arrived last month from young California artist ALAK, offering five cuts of hybridized, leftfield synth-pop. And now, a starkly minimalist video for the gauzy “Ilial Clone” song has found its way online. There’s precious little to describe about ALAK’s new piece of visuals, aside from the part where a perfectly still camera captures her unadorned, cross-armed vocal performance. But that’s more than OK with us; the drifting, effortless hooks and rubbery beats of “Ilial Clone” captivate our attention just fine.
