Download Two New Remixes of Dre Skull

Brooklyn-based label Mixpak has just shared two new remixes of “First Time,” a collaborative track by DJ/producer/label boss Dre Skull (pictured above), Purity Ring singer Megan James, and dancehall MC Popcaan. The new tracks arrive from burgeoning Barcelona producer Sinjin Hawke and Trouble & Bass honcho Drop the Lime’s new Curses moniker, who twist the ethereal and summery original tune into twinkling, keyboard-lead bass music and a salvo of jacking house, respectively. Below, Curses’ and Sinjin Hawke’s remixes of “First Time” can be streamed ahead of its physical release date on December 10; both tracks can be downloaded for the price of an email here.

Jensen Sportag “After Gardens (Obey City Remix)”

Shapeshifting Nashville duo Jensen Sportag (pictured above) dropped its debut LP, Stealth of Days, via Cascine late last month, and with the record’s release still freshly in the rearview, Brooklyn producer and LuckyMe affiliate Obey City has been enlisted to take on the slippery, R&B-infused “After Gardens” track. For the most part, Obey City relies on the existing music to dictate the flow of his remix, allowing floaty grooves and island-bell melodies to run their course as he reinforces them with new layers of sturdy percussion and an enhanced low-end slink. When all is said and done, Obey City has effectively reformatted the sweet, syrupy pop of Jensen Sportag to make it all the more street-wise.

Watch Soul Clap, Magda, Kerri Chandler, Ellen Allien, and More Talk Berlin’s Watergate Club

Previously only available on the DVD included in a celebratory box set for the tenth anniversary of river-front Berlin club Watergate, Watergate X, a 42-minute documentary about the German nightlife insititution, is now available for all to view online. Directed by Stathis Klotsikas, the piece is a sort of oral history about the opening and legacy of Watergate, as told through party vignettes, archival fliers and photos, and interviews with performers like Soul Clap, Magda, Ellen Allien, Lee Jones, Heidi, and Kerri Chandler (who, incidentally, has his own Watergate mix album on the way next year). The entirety of Watergate X can be seen below.

Com Truise Announces Upcoming EP for Ghostly, Streams Lead Single

New Jersey synth masestro Com Truise will return to the Ghostly label early next year with the seven-track Wave 1 EP, the first proper release from Cruise since his debut LP, Galactic Melt, dropped back in 2011. The forthcoming EP is said to continue chronicling the adventures of Com Truise, the alter-ego of producer Seth Haley, who is imagined to be “the world’s first synthetic/robotic astronaut.” Before the interstellar Wave 1 sees an official release on February 18 of next year, we’re treated to a stream of “Declination,” a characteristically synth-soaked production from Com Truise which features the vocoded vocals of Brooklyn artist Joel Ford (a.k.a. Airbird). “Declination” can be heard using the player below, where Wave 1‘s full tracklist and Com Truise’s upcoming North American tour dates are also included.

Video: DJ Red “Eyes Are Blind”

The title track from Rome/Berlin-based artist DJ Red‘s recently released EP for Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, “Eyes Are Blind” has been treated to a decidedly dark and sensual visual piece. Blurred black-and-white images of the Italian DJ/producer born Simona Calvani are further obscured by sizzling static and repeating visual layers. Matching the stark stillness of the music, the camera holds the frame completely still as Calvani gradualy undulates into full view, swaying from side to side while keeping her face hidden throughout the austere piece.

Pompeya “Power (Jimmy Edgar Remix)”

It’s times like these that one wonders when Jimmy Edgar finds time to actually, you know, sleep. Following the release of his Mercurio EP last week, the ceaseleslly prolific producer/DJ has deliverd yet another new remix—this time taking on “Power,” a cut from Moscow-based indie/funk outfit Pompeya. While it’s hard to find exactly where Edgar has buried Pompeya’s original tune, it’s also hard to argue with his work here, as he bounces back and forth between a series of locked-in grooves and cleverly precise builds which continually push the rework’s cyclical rhythms forward. Featured here as a free download, Jimmy Edgar’s remix of “Power” is also set to appear on Pompeya’s Tropical Remix record when it drops in January of next year via Brooklyn label No Shame.

Podcast 324: DJ Koze

The calendar only flipped to December a few days ago, but it seems that much of the music world has already begun to set its sights on the end of the year. More specifically, everyone seems to be looking back at the last 11 months and evaluating what pieces of music were amongst the year’s best. XLR8R is no different, and when our list of 2013’s best releases surfaces during the next few weeks, there’s little question that Amygadla, the long-awaited sophomore LP from DJ Koze, will make the cut. It’s been a big year for the veteran German producer, which is why we thought he would be an excellent candidate to put together the final XLR8R podcast of 2013. Over the past decade, DJ Koze has built up a reputation as a sort of lovable oddball, and this exclusive mix will do nothing to contradict that image. Much like his own work, the podcast is loosely rooted in house and techno, but its 70-plus minutes of music also reaffirm that Koze isn’t someone who’s afraid to color outside the lines. Armed with a playful spirit and a genuine sense of humor, Koze seems as comfortable dropping esoteric spoken word and bizarre outtakes from Marvin Gaye as he does stringing together warm slices of rich, organic house music. Oh yeah, he also manages to slip in a couple of conscious hip-hop tracks along the way. In short, it’s not the average podcast, but it’s not like we expected something “normal” with DJ Koze at the helm.

Clu “Jade”

The Chemistry—a nascent French publication covering music, visual art, and fashion—is celebrating its second birthday with a curated compilation of bass-informed sounds, titled LITHIUM, which will drop on December 8. Dublin producer Clu‘s cameo, “Jade,” pairs a highly melodic, arpeggiated synth squiggle with an evasive drum pattern that seems to operate in multiple, simultaneous time signatures. Around the halfway mark, the cut relaxes into a slightly more comfortable rhythm, as disembodied voices shout through the unquantized drum spasms and keyboard glides before finally coming to a rest.
