Makoto Primitive EP

Japan’s Makoto Shimizu may be best known for his ambient drum & bass tracks for LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking label, but he shows both range and restraint on his latest outing for Apollo Records. Makoto’s atmospheric singles “Far East” and “Enterprise” first appeared in record shops in 1999, alongside a growing GLR juggernaut of similar sounding artists such as Seba, Big Bud and Nookie, and Aquarius. Since then, he’s expanded his palette and has gone on to release music in various tempos for labels such as DJ Marky’s Innerground, Zinc’s Bingo Beats, and his own recently founded imprint, Human Elements.

Inspired by fellow Japanese composer and electronic pioneer, Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Ryuichi Sakamoto, Makoto takes texture and instrument placement as seriously as his mentor. Although his work can be densely layered with rainbow-hued pianos and synths, it’s rarely cluttered or sonically overburdened. A fundamental quality of space informs this EP’s five tracks, yet ethereal pads and dreamy atmospheres are Makoto’s stock and trade, and those gifts are also employed with strong results here.

Energetic opener “Primitive” features a rattling Brazilian-percussion jazz rhythm, echoing trumpet blasts and understated, almost monotone synths. Its stripped-down arrangement is suited for maximum dancefloor reaction. The 130-bpm track is also intriguingly reminiscent of works by fellow Japanese electronic jazz-dance practitioners United Future Organization and Kyoto Jazz Massive, a compositional style that Makoto is equally adept at. “A Spiritual Thing,” for instance, embraces jazz textures even more explicitly, building from a shuffling, staccato drum pattern accented by snare flams into a rich array of brass and synth chords. Again, a sparse arrangement allows percussive elements to roll along mesmerizingly toward a satisfying melodic breakdown. The song embodies the feel of London’s Velvet Rooms sessions circa the mid 2000s, where artists like Dego and IG Culture established nu-jazz traditions.

Makoto returns to his foundational atmospheric blueprint on “Sapphire Eyes,” a dreamy and melodic number that makes the most of lush synth chords and arpeggiating electric piano, with nods to Vangelis and Tomita’s cinematic works. Though short, this beatless track is a memorable lullaby. In contrast, Balearic number “Planet” is the EP’s weakest track, leaning toward bland new-age fusion, noodling electronic guitars and all.

Closer “Ritual” is another stripped-down, midtempo composition that begins with nature sounds, hand claps, echoing piano stabs, and vocal samples from jazz records, which all serve to illustrate the song’s title and theme well. Later, a steady kick-drum rhythm propels the track into deep-house territory in the vein of Osunlade or Masters at Work. Ultimately, Primitive lives up to its title with simple, back-to-basics arrangements that make for effective club tracks and enjoyable listening.

Delorean Speaks Out About Kidnapping in Mexico

As we reported yesterday, Spanish synth-pop quartet Delorean suffered a kidnapping scheme while in Mexico this past weekend for MUTEK.MX, and is thankfully safe again after the incident. Now, the band has issued a statement about the trying experience. “On Monday morning October 7th we received a phone call at our hotel room in Mexico City from a person posing as a hotel security officer,” reads the statement. It continues, “We were informed that there was a security threat at the hotel. What followed for the next 30 hours was an experience where the threat of death was real due to the psychological manipulation inflicted on us by our kidnappers.” The piece goes on to explain that they don’t think the blame should fall squarely on Mexico, and that they are actually grateful to the Mexican Federal Police for playing a part in rescuing them and returning them safely to their families. All of Delorean’s statement can be read here.

Richie Hawtin, Skream, Ben UFO, and More to Play Red Bull Revolutions in Sound

After announcing initial details for the second Revolutions In Sound event back in August, Red Bull Music Academy has unveiled the full lineup for its one-of-a-kind celebration. On the evening of November 14, each of the 30 capsules on the massive London Eye ferris wheel will feature a different, simultaneous DJ set curated by a famous UK club/party from the past three decades—including the likes of Rinse, Fabric, and The Warehouse Project. The event will spotlight over 80 artists; standouts include Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet, Skream, Goldie, Gilles Peterson, DJ EZ, Ben UFO (pictured above), Sasha, Dusky, and Todd Terry. For those not lucky enough to score tickets to a capsule, the ground level of the Eye will feature a silent disco for 2000 guests, with the ability for attendees to hear music from any of the 30 performances. All of the capsules will also broadcast live from Red Bull’s YouTube channel. The full Revolutions In Sound lineup is now available here.

Headlock “High Beams”

New York-based artist Lou DiBenedetto (a.k.a. Headlock) will inaugurate the city’s budding Sci-Fi & Fantasy label with its first LP release on October 29. Headlock’s self-titled debut is a pool of ambient improvisations that intentionally shy from drum sounds, samples, and vocals in favor of pure synth explorations. Taken from that release, “High Beams” ebbs and flows in a slow morass of fleeting pads, creating a wistful, reflective mood that sounds resigned to the world’s disorder. With the piece, DiBenedetto reflects an endgame state of history, but one that could also be a beginning. The artwork and tracklist for Headlock can be perused after the jump.

Listen to Shlohmo’s Remix of Samo Sound Boy

With this week’s release of Samo Sound Boy‘s Your Love EP via Body High, we’ve been treated to a brand-new music video of the record’s acid-leaning title track, and the goodies keep on coming with today’s arrival of “Your Love (Shlohmo Remix).” The SoCal beatmaker born Henry Laufer (pictured above) maintains the squelching synthlines and warped vocal samples of the original production, but not without adding in heavy doses of his own dark low end and clicking hip-hop beats. Shlomo’s new remix of Samo Sound Boy can be streamed below.

Legowelt and Miles Whittaker Remix Cosmin TRG on Upcoming 12″

Romanian-born tunesmith Cosmin TRG (a.k.a. Cosmin Nicolae) released his sophomore LP Gordian back in April via 50Weapons, and now, the ever-prolific Dutch producer Legowelt (pictured above) has been tapped to rework album closer “Terminus Abrupt” for a coinciding 12″ in 50Weapons’ remix series. Intended to “highlight the DJ aspects” of Nicolae’s record, Legowelt’s offering fleshes out dance-friendly cues from the original version while embossing it with his own synth quirks. Miles Whittaker—known as Miles, MLZ, and half of Demdike Stare—handles the second remix of the 12″, with his unearthly, dub-techno take on “Noise Code.” Set to drop on November 15, the release’s artwork and tracklist can be viewed below.

Jonsson / Alter “Jimi”

“Jimi” is a deep, rolling house tune from Jonsson / Alter‘s forthcoming sophomore LP, simply titled 2. The seven-plus-minute cut reveals its synth-driven bassline in the track’s opening moments, eventually splicing in sneaky waves of soul-drenched electric piano chords and refracted electronics as “Jimi” lays into its stripped-back groove. Though not outfitted with many upfront adornments, this elongated slice of low-swung house hardly grows tiresome, and speaks well to the Swedish duo’s upcoming album, which is set to drop on November 16 via Kontra.
