813 Espoir Voyage

The primary appeal of 813, the anonymous Moscow-based beatsmith and RAD collective member who works as a fireman by day and producer by night, is that his tunes have always spelled out the direction they’re about to take. Since his more chillwave-indebted debut Dusty Bubbles surfaced in 2011, the producer has remained a specialist in ecstatic, giddy beats, using a tasteful mix of tropical synths, pitched pop samples, and anthemic, subtly funky chords. The only notable change in his productions has been a subtle increase in speed, as he’s gradually moved from fractured funk and boom-bap toward 140 bpm. On his new 12″, 813 delivers three originals that distill what is so sustainably listenable about his work, while also giving a chance for three more rising tunesmiths to leave their own mark on his material, with consistent, often admirable results.

Espoir Voyage‘s strength stems from the fact that 813’s originals on the a-side and the opposing remixes on the b-side seem to run in magnetic, parallel lines. The most mined cut here is the title track; it’s a concise, brightly colored tune that hoists joyous piano stabs and a plethora of subtle details over a tectonically shifting rhythm section, adding claps, shakers, and a muffled woodblock across multiple bars. Both fellow RAD chum DZA and Los Angeles-bred beat juggler Lil Texas get a turn at the song, with DZA’s rework being especially interesting. His take buries the opening riff under his own original synth embellishments and a considerably more diverse rhythm, as he pulls the tune through a series of tempo reformats; the track begins as a thick house cut and transitions into a grime-indebted, half-time composition. The EP’s standout juxtaposition, however, is the throttled stomp of lead track “Village,” which opens the EP’s trio of originals, and its beautiful remix by Astro Nautico boss and rising producer Obey City. The latter is expansive, switching sonic pallettes from house to breakbeats and adding a sultry sheen to the original, letting various sounds and one-off patterns come and go at random before rounding the tune off with a soulful, booming finish. On the whole, Espoir Voyage is a humble, well-rounded release, one that offers the chance for 813 to indulge in more of what he does best and also lets others join in the conversation.

Botany “Anchor”*Western Vinyl *

Hailing from Denton, TX, burgeoning production talent Botany has unveiled plans to drop his debut full-length, Lava Diviner (Truestory), this October via Western Vinyl. The 12-track album—which comes mastered by leading SoCal sonic alchemist Matthewdavid and features one guest spot from vocalist/producer Ryat—is said to explore a variety of beat-indebted hybrids which incoporate “proto-new age textures” and a “primal boom-bap pulse.” Not to leave us all in the dark, Botany has shared the forthcoming album’s first single as a free download; “Anchor”‘s rich meshing of immersive atmospheres, dusty drum loops, and Gold Panda-esque melodic structures serve as an enticing glimpse into Lava Diviner (Truestory). John Tejada, The Field, and More to Celebrate 20 Years of Kompakt in Berlin

Esteemed Cologne label Kompakt will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a week-long pop-up shop and events series, which will include music-making workshops and live performances from a number of the outpost’s affiliates at Ableton headquarters in Berlin. Though the program’s focus will be specifically on Ableton and Kompakt, a press release states that the events will also bring attention to the “local Berlin music community and beyond.” The extensive affair will kick off on August 31 with a discussion from Kompakt co-founder Wolfgang Voigt and Ableton co-founder Gerhard Behles, and will end on September 7 with a closing party that features performances from John Tejada, Michael Mayer, Tobias Thomas, Blond:ish, Rebolledo, Stocksaur, Dave DK, Justus Köhncke, and Kölsch. Artists such as The Field (pictured above), Dauwd, Deadbeat, Blue Hawaii, and Coma are also scheduled to appear throughout the week. A full program of events and more information can be found here.

Stream Sei A’s ‘Blades of Brazil’ EP for Turbo

Last month, Tiga’s Turbo label announced the launch of its Warehouse Series, a new project set to explore “futuristic techno at its ruffest and tuffest” across releases from the likes of Gingy & Bordello, Randomer, and the increasingly prolific Sei A. But before the latter producer’s Blades of Brazil EP drops next week, the three-track effort is now available to stream in full. Following the series’ Ruffa and Saturday Night Fervor EPs—already delivered by Randomer and Gingy & Bordello, respectively—Sei A’s contribution adds more strong-armed compositions to Turbo’s new project, as the Glaswegian artist drops off a trio of tunes from the deeper ends of the dancefloor spectrum. Blades of Brazil sees its official release on August 26, and can be heard in its entirety below.

Boddika Details New 12″ for Swamp81; Preview It Now

It hasn’t exactly been the busiest year for Nonplus label boss Boddika; the London DJ/producer has released a handful of collaborative tunes, but has yet to issue a solo record in 2013. That’ll change soon enough, however, as he’s gearing up to drop the four-track Steam EP via Swamp81. Though most of its music has been floating around YouTube and DJ sets since last year, Boddika’s double-12″ package won’t be officially released until August 26. Sizable clips of all four tunes can be heard before then, here, and Steam‘s artwork and tracklist can be found below. (via Juno Plus)

Video: Deft “Faded”

In anticipation of his Voight Kampff EP for Project Mooncircle, Croydon-based producer Deft has unveiled a slick video for a cut from his forthcoming record. The clip for “Faded” parallels the tune’s polished production style, as the graceful moves of German dancer Inga-Maria Eichentopf are accompanied by a series of intricate and washed-out visual effects. Deft’s Voight Kampff EP will arrive on September 6, but before then, previews of the record’s six tracks can be heard below.

Watch Untold Talk Production with Dubspot

Hemlock label boss and consistently forward-moving producer Jack Dunning (a.k.a. Untold) recently stopped by the Dubspot production school’s NYC campus to highlight the digital tools and creative processes which have yielded the man’s impressive discography. The new, 10-minute video switches between a one-on-one interview with Dunning and footage of the experienced producer addressing a classroom, to which he reveals how he uses the—perhaps underappreciated—production program Reaper and Native Instrument’s Massive soft-synth on almost all of his tracks. The illuminating piece with Untold can be watched below.

Tokyo Hands “Valleys”*Donky Pitch*

North Carolina producer Tokyo Hands is the latest to join the ranks of Brighton’s party-turned-label Donky Pitch. The #TOMCREW founder will release his five-track Islands EP with the label on September 16, but has offered a taste of its hyperactive ebullience ahead of time. “Valleys,” a gorgeous tune which closes out Tokyo Hands’ forthcoming record, impresses with its slow, foggy groove, tropical synthwork, and soft, lilting vocal sample.

Shed Readies New 12″ for 50Weapons; Preview It Now

For Rene Pawlowitz’s first release of the year under his Shed moniker, the veteran Berlin DJ/producer and one-time XLR8Rpodcast contributor will issue a two-track 12″ for Modeselektor’s powerhouse imprint 50Weapons. “The Dirt” b/w “Fluid 67” pairs the silky a-side cut with a heavy, unfolding groove on the flip, and will be released on September 13.
