Listen to Kamikaze Space Programme’s New 12″ for West Norwood Cassette Library

Over the past few years, UK record hub West Norwood Cassette Library has gradually made its name as purveyors of chunky, left-of-center techno sounds with a predilection for gritty details and noisy nuances. We’ve heard some quality records in this vein from the likes of up-and-comers like Bobby Champs and Kevin McPhee, but the outpost’s latest offering is a four-track 12″ by the largely unknown Kamikaze Space Programme, a Bristol artist born Chris Jarman who recently took on the moniker after years spent DJing and producing under the name Raiden. And with this week’s release of Jarman’s latest record, we’re pleased to present all of its tunes to stream in full. From the blown-out low end and punishing rhythms of “Leyland DAF 45” to the metallic percussion and deadened rave stabs of “Pyongyang,” WNCL015 is a 12″ meant for anyone with a taste for unique samples and generally nasty vibes in their dancefloor music. All of Kamikaze Space Programme’s new music can be heard in the player below.

Dimitry Liss “The Satisfiers of Alpha Blue”*Immersed Audio *

Russian-born, Dubai-based producer Dimitry Liss will bring the summer vibes to the Immersed Audio imprint with his forthcoming To the Moon EP, and the record’s lead track, “The Satisfiers of Alpha Blue,” wastes abolsutley no time bringing in a cool summer breeze. Built around a disco-esque percussion loop, the production’s sweeping chords and laid-back bass pattern lead the way, occasionally joined up by lovey-dovey vocal snippets that fall into tasteful, filtered breakdowns. The To the Moon EP is set to drop on July 8, but before then, can be streamed in full after the jump.

Listen to Walton’s Debut LP for Hyperdub

Today, young Hyperdub affiliate Sam Walton (or just Walton when he’s making tunes) makes good on the promise of early 12″s and EPs with the release of his debut album for the aforementioned label. The Beyond LP is said to take on classically minded house and techno music through the lenses of bass-specific UK genres like grime and funky, and now, all 13 fresh examples of that eclectic production approach can be streamed online. Courtesy of Resident Advisor, Walton’s brand-new record for Hyperdub is available to hear in its entirety on the same day of its release, here.

Moby Announces Collaboration-Heavy New Album for Mute

One of dance music’s most recognizable figures, DJ/producer Moby is set to release his follow up to 2011’s Destroyed, an album heavy on collaborations with the likes of The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, London outfit Cold Specks, and indie-folk artist Damien Jurado. Called Innocents, the record was co-produced by Mark “Spike” Stent, and is said to take an analog and lo-fi approach to “retrofitting antiquated styles.” Moby’s next LP will see release on October 1 via Mute, but in the meantime, the record’s first single, a collaboration with Cold Specks called “A Case For Shame,” is available to stream below, where the artwork and tracklist for Innocents can also be found.

3. Almost Home (with Damien Jurado)
4. Going Wrong
5. The Perfect Life (with Wayne Coyne)

Download an Improvised Mix from Archie Pelago

Bubblin’ Up Brooklyn band Archie Pelago is certainly a unique proposition in the dance music world—a trio with a live setup that features Serato-manipulated cello and saxophone, as well as a DJ. The group has been on a prolific streak recently, having just dropped an EP via its own label, Sly Gazabo, with another 12″ on the way later this month. Now, Archie Pelago is the latest to contribute to Resident Advisor’s long-running podcast series. The mix is an intriguing and unconventional blend of the trio’s classical training and improvisational mentality, pushing the individual members’ clear appreciation for and understanding of contemporary dance music. Featuring cuts from Distal, Sandwell District, and Clay Wilson, as well as plenty of its own productions and live reworkings, Archie Pelago delivers one of the most distinctive mixes of the year. Head over to Resident Advisor to download the podcast and check out a quick Q&A with the band, here.

Check Out a Rare In-Person Q&A with Zomby

It verges on tiresome to list the number of idiosyncrasies which have come to define the public persona of New York-based producer Zomby, but “elusive” and “outspoken” are easily at the top of his seeming character traits. As he’s more interested to mouth-off on Twitter than he is to engage in a proper interview, XLR8R was unable to talk with the artist in preparation for our Deep Inside feature on his brand-new With Love album for 4AD, but now, a Q&A with Zomby has surfaced which was actually conducted in person. The piece appeared today over on Pitchfork, and features an introduction almost as long as the conversation itself. But those opening paragraphs tell the understandably frustrating—not to mention interesting—story of actually having to track down Zomby, which helps give a useful bit of context to the following questions about UK dance music, anonymity, fashion, nostalgia, With Love, and more. The whole thing can be read here.

Natasha Kmeto “Idiot Proof (Grown Folk Remix)”**

On this silky remix of “Idiot Proof,” a cut from the solid Crisis LP by Natasha Kmeto (pictured above), Canadian duo Grown Folk heaps a mass of various synth sounds onto the Portland-based artist’s dark, Italo-touched original production. The lengthy track takes its sweet time to really get going, but after building up enough steam from the slow-growing whirlwind of weightless melodies, vaporous vocal samples, and subtle thumps, “Idiot Proof (Grown Folk Remix)” launches into a full-fledged house rhythm which carries on for long enough to elicit sweaty movements from anyone within earshot of its atmospheric grooves.

Unsound Plans London Events for Fall 2013

Krakow’s Unsound festival has notably been expanding to new outposts lately—including the semi-annual series of NYC events and, most recently, an Adelaide showcase this past March. Now, the Polish festival has its sights set on London, announcing a mini-festival to take place across four days this fall. The line-ups for the four events—which take place at different venues across London—is consistent with Unsound’s usual taste for more challenging artists, and brings together performers and visual artists from a variety of backgrounds. Highlights of the roster include Demdike Stare, a rare performance from Forest Swords, and Lustmord‘s first-ever London show. Though purchase details are yet to be finalized, we do know that tickets for each event must be purchased separately. Before Unsound’s upcoming London festival takes place between September 26 and 29, further details can be found here.

Stream Lil Jabba’s Debut LP for Local Action

Lil Jabba is an odd figure in the world of footwork. Originally from Australia, the producer divides his time between Baltimore and Brooklyn, but he’s actually affiliated with Chicago’s Teklife crew, whose key members include DJ Spinn and DJ Rashad. With a series of left-of-center cassettes and Bandcamp-only releases to his name, the producer is dropping his first full-length album via forward-thinking UK imprint Local Action today, and has simultaneously treated us to a full stream of its 12 tracks. The Scales LP exhibits a decidedly lo-fi take on the footwork template, with Lil Jabba packing his tracks full of intricate samples, noodling interludes, and deliriously heady beats. It’s definitely an uncanny brand of footwork, and while there’s no doubt these tracks would work on the dancefloor, it still sounds quite unlike anything we’ve heard before from the genre. As the album’s press release so aptly states, “These aren’t trax, they’re tapestries.” Lil Jabba’s Scales can be heard in its entirety via the player below.

Matthewdavid Drops New Ambient Cassette

Matthewdavid has just announced the release of a new cassette for his own Leaving Records imprint. The leftfield producer has always stuck out within the LA scene with his inventive productions, and this new tape only continues his restless trajectory into unknown territories. Mindflight is an entirely beatless, ambient offering, with lush soundscapes that mix field recordings into reverb-drenched drones. The limited-edtion cassette is out now, with the digital package to follow on July 9. In the meantime, head over to the Leaving Records website to hear a sun-warped excerpt from the album, here.
