Hot City “You & Me 4 Eva”

Never ones to shy away from giving out free tunes, UK DJ/production duo Hot City has shared a break-heavy cut following the release of its brand-new Buggin’ Out EP via Moshi Moshi. Indulge in the wailing sirens, bulbous bass drops, old-school organ stabs, and pitched-up vocal hooks of “You & Me 4 Eva,” and then go check out its utterly ridiculous (and NSFW) “music video” over on the Unknown to the Unknown YouTube channel, here.

You & Me 4 Eva

Reilly Steel ICU EP

The opening chords on the title track of San Francisco resident Reilly Steel‘s ICU EP sound strikingly similar to the lead single from Sepalcure’s 2011 debut LP, “Pencil Pimp.” The stabs are a bit higher on “ICU,” and the crackle of white noise is more pronounced on “Pencil Pimp,” but the two-tone melodies match. The semblance between the songs is a blessing and a curse for Steel, a dynamic that persists throughout his EP; although his work demonstrates some genuine skill with lush and clattering post-dubstep sounds, his songs don’t always stand out from the scene’s high-profile releases.

Like “ICU,” “Takin’ Me” aligns Steel’s work with the softened, layered, and reverb-heavy sounds championed by artists like Om Unit. The brassy diva vocals, cranking snare rolls, lurching bass notes, and dizzy synths oscillating overhead are well selected and composed with an apt hand, even if they’re taken from familiar terrain. Herein lies the rub with Steel’s EP: many of the tunes simply put, don’t offer much in the way of personal flare. At times, like on “ICU,” Steel’s influences speak louder than he does.

However, there are flashes where the young producer demonstrates the potential to mold components of layered, bass-heavy music into a shape he can call his own. The sound of lapping water takes a central role on the plodding, dub-tinged “Inside,” mingling with quiet drum hits, the hiss of white noise, lurking synth chords, and vocal samples that are alternately pitched up to a squeal or muffled into reverb. The song stands out from the EP’s three other original productions in its patience. The sparse beat doesn’t take aim at the dancefloor like “The Healing,” a track which edges toward house while relying upon vertical drops into rapid-fire percussion. In contrast, “Inside” distinguishes itself by flirting with introverted darkness.

Remixers Mak & Pasteman, Jaws Da Jormungand, and Cosmic Revenge each take stabs at flavoring Steel’s rhythms with their own personal touches. Da Jormungand injects echoing, fast-paced darkness into Steel’s fuzzy, house-leaning version of “Takin Me,” editing the diva vocals into an alien growl. However, it’s “ICU” that gets the most attention from remixers; Mak & Pasteman offer two versions of the tune, but Cosmic Revenge steals the spotlight with his loopy synth notes and sharp claps.

As for Steel, his talent for rearranging familiar elements of the bass-music sphere is ultimately his greatest asset, but it also represents his biggest challenge. Steel’s talent sometimes outshines his creativity, propelling his work into the same league as a host of other savvy producers without distinguishing him sonically. Creating dizzy and reverb-heavy bass beats is an increasingly competitive task; as such, demonstrating tasteful and adroit production can be as important as using those rhythms to carve out a distinct voice.

Kid606 to Release ‘Lost in the Game’ LP, Shares First Single

Berlin-via-Bay Area genre bender Kid606 has been teasing at his latest sound, a kind of glitch-leaning electronic shoegaze, with variousEPs and free tunes over the past handful of months, and his efforts will soon culminate in the release of a new LP for his Tigerbeat 6 label. The forthcoming 13-track album is called Lost in the Game, and is described as a “sea change” and a “revised focus” for the producer born Miguel De Pedro. Submotion Orchestra “Blindspot (Maribou State Remix)”

It’s been over a month since we last heard from London duo Maribou State, but the pair has returned today with a fresh remix following its recently released Native EP. The original track comes courtesy of UK electronic-fusion ensemble Submotion Orchestra, who’s jazz-flavored “Blindspot” was handed over to Maribou State so that the twosome could rework its seductive vibes into a pretty, house-flecked groove. “Blindspot (Maribou State Remix)” warps the pattering jazz drumming into a clicking beat that charges the tune’s shimmering synths and pleasantly sleepy atmosphere with a bouyant energy.

Addison Groove Preps 50Weapons 12″

Addison Groove, the man behind the massive “Footcrab” single and this year’s Transitor Rhythm album, will soon drop his second offering of 2012, a four-track 12″ for Modeselektor’s 50Weapons imprint. Called Adventures in Rainbow Country, the UK tunesmith’s new EP, which is said to have been produced right after the recording sessions for Transistor Rhythm, is set for a September 14 release. Before then, you can check out its artwork and relatively unusual tracklist below. (Now, there are a couple clips to hear, too.)

Melé featuring Kano “Beamer”

Like Hudson Mohawke and Lunice‘s recent self-titled EP as TNGHT, “Beamer”—the latest single from young Liverpool-based producer Melé—is brash, energetic, and has little time for subtlety. But whereas TNGHT’s music straddles the line between hip-hop and the more colorful ends of 140-bpm bass music, “Beamer” pairs its maximalist synth lines with the livelier, rough-edged UK sounds of grime—providing a platform for former N.A.S.T.Y Crew member Kano to deliver one of his most likeable performances since 2004’s “Ps & Qs.”

It’s Kano’s contribution that makes “Beamer” a success—the presence of the original instrumental on the b-side only serves to highlight this. Left alone, the beat is lively to the point of awkwardness; propelled along by relentless trance synths at the difficult tempo of 155 bpm, it’s littered with nods to various undesirable strands of UK rave music. As dance music, it’s just too much of an oddity, but its esoteric bounce suits grime much better. Kano rides the springy drum machine beat fluidly, his playful bragging softening the bravado of Melé’s weighty 2-step beat. He especially shines over the breakdown; taking the money-and-women boasts of hip-hop and relocating them to the dancefloor of
an ‘old school garage rave’—all delivered in an accentuated British accent—Kano radiates personality in a way we haven’t seen from him in quite a while.

“Beamer” is still a slightly strange proposition, one that’s undeniably pulled from rave culture but is probably too energetic and chaotic to realistically fit into a club scenario. But where some of TNGHT’s EP suffered for trading personality in favor of swagger, Kano’s appearance here transforms “Beamer” into a very enjoyable little curiosity.

Karma Kid “Lust, Love”

18-year-old UK producer Karma Kid has been garnering a lot of attention recently, mostly due to his tracks receiving play from the likes of Radio 1’s Annie Mac, and will soon be adding to the hubub when he drops the “It’s Always” single via Bondax‘s Just Us label. Featured here, “Lust, Love” is an unreleased track from the young tunesmith, which hints at Karma Kid’s maturity as a beatmaker with its layers of vocal clips oozing over heavy basslines and grooving drum ticks. Karma Kid creates an emotive, club-ready production on “Lust, Love,” one that sits comfortably amongst his peers without sounding like just another drop in the ever-expanding pond of the UK-bass scene.

Moog Updates Animoog with Expanded MIDI Capabilities

The synth builders (and, more recently, app devlopers) at Moog have announced a signifigant update to the Animoog iPad/iPhone app, including an improvement to the use and implemetation of MIDI. The Animoog v1.1 upgrade, which is available for free to those who have purchased the previous version of the app, includes a doubling of the available recording time (to create internal loops) and sees a much smarter organization of the factory and user-created presets into new categories. Most importantly, though, the new version allows for the use of virtually any MIDI device to control its various parameters. Essentially, each function of the synth has been given a CC number, which can be mapped to an external MIDI device by simply touching and assigning the parameter to a specific control. Furthermore, an additional MIDI Expansion upgrade is being offered, which allows for the Animoog app (particularly its X-Y pad) to send out MIDI data in order to control external devices such as hardware synths.

Of course, all of this new functionality relies on users having some sort of USB device that allows for the exchange of MIDI information between the iPad and external sources. For those that do have this ability, the already powerful Animoog app has expanded its usability even further. You can check the video below for a full breakdown, and to gawk at the wall of Moog hardware not so subtly shown off in the background.

Podcast 260: Groundislava

Groundislava (a.k.a. Jasper Patterson) may hail from Los Angeles and hold a membership in Shlohmo’s Wedidit crew, but it’s hard to argue that the young beatmaker hasn’t carved out a sound all his own. Over the past few years, he’s dropped a steady series of releases, most recently this summer’s TV Dream EP. On August 28, he’ll be following that up with a new album, Feel Me, a full-length effort on Friends of Friends that finds Groundislava synthesizing his loves of dreamy soundscapes, videogame nostalgia, and booming hip-hop beats into a singular musical vision. It seems that he’s reached a new level of artistic maturity, which is why we invited him to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. He pulls heavily from his own catalog, unearthing a few previously unreleased gems in the process, but he also seems to enjoy the work being created by his Friends of Friends labelmates. It’s a relaxed mix, one isn’t scared to stray from the dancefloor but never ventures into absolute abstraction. Much like Groundislava’s music, the podcast is hard to neatly pin down—perhaps that’s what makes it such an interesting listen.
