Sepalcure to Release New Single Ahead of Forthcoming LP

Another day, another piece of news about Brooklyn duo Sepalcure. Fresh off the announcement that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma are set to release their collaborative project’s self-titled debut album, and only 24 hours after the pair offered up “Deep City Insects” from the forthcoming Surreal Estate compilation as a free download, it appears that Sepalcure fans will have a chance to get their hands on another piece of new music in the weeks ahead. “Pencil Pimp” (artwork above) is the first single from Sepalcure, and is set to arrive on November 7 via Hotfiush Recordings. Backing the release will be non-album cut “I’m Alright.”

Harmonizer “Landline”

Earlier this week, synth explorers Toby Aronson and Greg Davis (a.k.a. Harmonizer) released a brand-new EP via Joel Ford’s and Daniel Lopatin’s Software imprint, called World Complete. “Landline” is one of the four drifty excursions offered therein, a lushly handcrafted landscape rife with analog tones, hypnotic rhythms, and undulating layers of dizzied melody.

Dirtybird Apologizes to Metalheadz

Yesterday afternoon, XLR8R posted a refix put together by young producer A1 Bassline, who had reworked a classic drum & bass tune from the Metalheadz catalog. The track had been forwarded to us by Dirtybird label head Claude VonStroke, who was offering the refix as a free download for our site. Earlier today, word got back to Metalheadz bossman Goldie, who was lessthanpleased with the situation, as was a vocal portion of his fanbase. Long story short, the track in question was quickly taken down at A1 Bassline’s and VonStroke’s request, A1 Bassline apologized, and it appears that Goldie has accepted.

Nonetheless, Claude VonStroke wanted to issue a public apology, which we are posting at his request.

From Claude VonStroke:
Dirtybird and A1 Bassline sincerely apologize to DBridge, Goldie, and Metalheadz for the unauthorized posting of a track that we did not have any right to post. I, Barclay Crenshaw (Claude VonStroke), take full responsibility for this mistake and have made every effort to reconcile this error as fast as possible. Here at Dirtybird we are all massive fans of Metalheadz and you can be sure nothing like this will ever happen again.

T. Williams “Break Broke”

The Local Action imprint has carved out a solid niche in its year-plus of existence, and T. Williams has undeniably been the label’s top act. Considering that Williams also heads up his own equally impressive imprint, Deep Teknologi, the London-based producer has pulled off quite the feat. “Break Broke” is his third single for Local Action, and finds him stretching his sonic repertoire.

Unfortunately, his experiments aren’t always for the better. The record’s two b-sides, “Go In” and “Analog Tour,” both find Williams a bit clumsy while attempting to weave some new elements into his sound. From a musical standpoint, “Go In” is actually pretty standard Deep Teknologi fare with its shuffling tribal drums and stripped-down nods to South African house. That said, the song’s vocal element, a robot-like voice saying “Go In” seemingly ad infinitum, quickly becomes grating. “Analog Tour” is a much bigger depature, with Williams exploring billowy synth melodies and old-school acid breaks. The track has its moments, but comes off more like a producer messing around with his new toys than a cohesive song.

Much more successful is the single’s title track, which also leans heavily on a repetitive vocal sample, albeit one that is more deftly cut up and is smartly not employed throughout the tune’s entire seven-and-a-half-minute duration. “Break Broke” also includes Williams’ usual hard-hitting percussion, along with thick, fuzzy basslines and some lilting, Night Slugs-esque synth melodies. It’s the kind of track that could easily set off a dancefloor—especially with its lengthy intro and head-turning drop—and provides solid evidence that Williams is capable of expanding his palette without going awry.

Sepalcure “Deep City Insects”

Here, we have a piece of dark, submerged bass music that arrives courtesy of Brooklyn duo Sepalcure and Salva‘s Californian beat hub, Frite Nite. We’re treated to the sounds of “Deep City Insects” just days before the release of the label-spanning compilation it’s featured on, Surreal Estate (pictured above), and the producers’ own self-titled debut LP, which drops on November 21. After hearing such soulful new tunes from Sepalcure, you can definitely count us as looking forward to both records.
