Podcast 217: Pezzner’s Decibel Mix

Beginning tomorrow, Seattle officially becomes the center of the electronic-music universe—at least through Sunday night—thanks to the city’s annual Decibel Festival, which is once again bringing a dizzying array of talent to the Pacific Northwest. XLR8R will certainly be in attendance—look for updates from the festival in the days ahead—but in the meantime, we’ve teamed up with the festival organizers and tapped Seattle producer Pezzner to put together an exclusive Decibel mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Pulling heavily from the dozens of top-flight artists set to perform throughout the week, not to mention several Decibel alums, Pezzner has weaved together a surprisingly cohesive mix that navegates house, techno, ambient, and more over the course of an hour. Just like the festival itself, the music can vary quite drastically, but the quality is always high.

Tempa T “Next Hype (Mosca Remix)”

In all fairness, this isn’t a new remix. According to UK producer Mosca (pictured above), who yesterday offered the track as a free download via Twitter, it was created “back in the day,” presumably a few years ago when Tempa T‘s “Next Hype” was the biggest grime tune on the planet. The original song was noted for its ferocity and anger, and Mosca kept much of that intact while inserting a heavy dose of B-more house and maybe even a bit of ghettotech into the mix. It’s rough around the edges and certainly lacks the refinement of his more recent productions, but it’s an interesting sonic artifact—one that shows just how far the London beatmaker has come.

Check Out Karizma’s FACT Mix

The write up for FACT‘s latest podcast, a one-hour transmission from Baltimore-based house icon Karizma, starts off stating, “You have no idea how long we’ve been trying to get a Karizma mix for,” which we can fully empathize with. (Hey, Karizma! Where’s our podcast?) Needless to say, we’re happy that a mix from the DJ/producer finally landed somewhere. We encourage you to give it a spin. You can listen to FACT Mix 286: Karizma and check out the tracklist, which features loads of remixes and originals from the veteran artist, below, and if you’re looking for a little extra background on the podcast, head over here.

Hrdvsion “I Can’t Exist”

Canadian-born Hrdvsion (a.k.a. Nathan Jonson, who now resides in Berlin) has always been a bit of an oddball producer, but his new I Can’t Exist EP finds him applying his musical eccentricities to a more straight-ahead techno template. Clocking in at nearly 10 minutes, the record’s title track features a stripped-down beat, rubbery synth notes, and a simple bassline, all of which provide a sturdy framework for the song’s warped and pitch-shifted vocals. It’s a trippy journey, albeit one worth taking whether your losing it on a crowded dancefloor or weirding out alone in the privacy of your own home. (via Altered Zones)

Korallreven “As Young As Yesterday (Girl Unit Remix)”

Swedish duo Korallreven has an album—which is, oddly enough, called An Album—coming out on November 15, but will release its first single, “As Young As Yesterday,” this week. Girl Unit‘s remix of that Balearic-tinged tune arrives on that 12″ too, and is paired with a rework from Panda Bear as well as another original track. The glowing synth chords and all around ravey vibes of Girl Unit’s version are far and away the most club-friendly sounds to be heard on that record, but still make for a fitting juxtaposition next to Korallreven’s deceptively sunny and buoyant pop music. Tim Hecker Preps New EP

The man responsible for one of this year’s most stunning long-players (not to mention one of our favorite features and easily the longest mix of 2011), Canadian sound alchemist Tim Hecker, has announced he’ll drop a new EP on October 10 via Kranky. The nine-track Dropping Pianos EP (pictured above) is described as “sketch pieces recorded in 2010 in preparation for what would become the Ravedeath, 1972 album” and “a peek behind the curtains into [Hecker’s] working process.” You can hear one of those sketches, and check out the tracklist of Hecker’s new record, below.

Viadrina “Bodymind”

This booming club production is the title track of the latest digital EP to surface from Swedish net label Discobelle, courtesy of Polish production duo Viadrina. “Bodymind” is one of three tech-house-leaning jams featured on the pair’s second record, which is out today. You can listen to the rest of the Bodymind EP after the jump.

SCB Announces New Single

In what is shaping up to be a rather busy end of the year run for the Hotflush label head, Paul Rose is set to add to his forthcoming DJ Kicks contribution and latest Scuba single, “Adrenalin” (which is out today), with a pair of tunes being released under his SCB moniker. As shown in the excellent XLR8Rpodcast the man dropped early this year, Rose’s SCB project is more aligned with deep 4/4 techno and house than the forward-thinking dubstep he’s traditionally made as Scuba. But as the Berlin-based producer edges towards more house-friendly territory with his latest Scuba effort, it appears that SCB is equally beginning to move towards a bit darker territory on the forthcoming “Mace” b/w “Overlay” single. So far, we’ve got no audio to share in order to back this claim up, but you’ll be able to verify our findings soon enough, when the single drops on October 24 via Rose’s own SCB imprint. For now, you can check the artwork below.

Vin Sol “Despacio”

Although the warm days of summer may be gone for most, and fast approaching their end for the rest, California seems to still have plenty of sunshine left, and West Coast producer Vin Sol seems ready to keep the warm vibes going with a new mix (more about that later) and a new track which he’s been kind enough to offer up here for everyone’s enjoyment. And how could you not enjoy “Despacio?” The strings are bright and glistening, the vocal chops are in just the right spots, and the whole affair has this undeniably sultry disco feel that is as smooth as it is dance-worthy. But as we mentioned before, this track isn’t the only thing Vin Sol has up his sleeve, as he’s just dropped the fourth episode in his ongoing Wizard H.O.U.S.E. mix series (check the Dust LaRock artwork above), an endeavor that incorporates more similarly deep and soulful cuts. You’ll find the mix (and its accompanying tracklist) for your listening/downloading pleasure after the jump.

Video: Com Truise “Brokendate”

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/29439205" width="530" height="298" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>".

We’ve certainly seen plenty of new music videos that reappropriate VHS footage from ’80s sci-fi flicks, but on this slick clip for Com Truise‘s “Brokendate” tune, the New Jersey-based bedroom producer ups the ante by creating his very own nostalgic sci-fi thriller. Director Will Joines touches on a handful of cinematic legacies—including Tron, Cloak & Dagger, and maybe even a little Blade Runner—in his neon-soaked detective noir, which casts Com Truise as the shades-wearing, cigar-smoking villainous mastermind.
