Mosca to Release New EP Via 3024

As we pointed out in our glowing review of the “Done Me Wrong” b/w “Bax” 12″ by UK bass juggler Mosca, the producer is a bit of a shape-shifter, and isn’t quite what we would call prolific. Now it would seem that maybe we were only half right, as Martyn’s 3024 imprint has just announced it will release a new EP from the artist shortly after he dropped the aforementioned 12″ via Numbers. The record is called The Wavey EP, and features three (four if you buy digital) cuts of deep, bass-driven techno crafted in a way that is purely Mosca’s own. We currently don’t have the artwork to share, but before the EP drops at the end of October, you can check out the tracklist below.

1. Dom Perignon
2. Orange Jack
3. Jager
4. Wray ‘n Neph

Lazer Sword’s Lando Kal to Drop New 12″ Via Rush Hour

Yet another great release scheduled to drop via Dutch record hub Rush Hour is the new two-track 12″ from the Berlin-residing half of Lazer Sword, Lando Kal. Described as “a futuristic synth piece with heavy garage leanings” and “[an] introverted electro-fused b-boy classic,” “Maneuver” b/w “Run It” (pictured above) will be available before the end of September. You can preview each cut below.

“Maneuver”

Throwing Snow “Shadower” b/w “Sanctum”

At this point, it’s pretty safe to say that the UK bass scene (and its sonically similar tendrils around the globe) is suffering from a glut of artists. Just a few years after people first started uttering things like “post-dubstep” (and quickly therafter began making qualifications for doing so), it seems that new producers are constantly coming out of the woodwork, all of them with their own permutation of the sound. And although a lot of exciting and interesting music has been (and continues to be) created by a select number of producers, there are plenty of also-rans out there. For a while, Throwing Snow could be safely filed into the latter category. The young UK producer wasn’t turning out bad music by any means; his various tracks and remixes—many of which have been posted here on XLR8R—were perfectly enjoyable, but none of them really stood out as particularly unique or special. However, with the release of new single “Shadower” b/w “Spectrum,” it seems possible that Throwing Snow has made the proverbial leap.

Both sides of the 12″ are impressive, but “Shadower”—which also has a cool video—is especially strong. Built upon a rather simple, shuffling drumbeat, the song slowly brings in spooky synth tones and ominous vocal loops, creating something akin in mood to Demdike Stare or a John Carpenter soundtrack. The track’s principal melody, which sounds something like a steel drum, has been pitched and filtered just enough to make it sound alien. There is a lot happening on “Shadower,” yet Throwing Snow doesn’t take the time to smooth out all the layers, which somehow creates an even more unsettling—and compelling—listen.

More straightforward is “Sanctum,” which pairs a fairly rigid 2-step beat with some ghostly vocal snippets, a growling bassline, and a driving violin melody. Once again, the whole affair sounds as though it’s been hastily assembled, insofar that the song certainly hasn’t been overworked or overproduced. Yet it somehow works, as these Throwing Snow offerings exude a real looseness and a raw, organic feel. More importantly, they also represent his best work yet.

Watch Theo Parrish Rap with Ghostface Killah

Admittedly, this is only news in the most marginal sense of the word, but apparently Detroit house legend Theo Parrish hopped onstage last night during a Ghostface Killah show and rapped Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s famous verse from “Protect Ya Neck.” This is definitely one of those WTF moments, and yes, it was captured on film. We’re not sure exactly how or why Parrish was the selected audience member brought on stage—Ghostface apparently asked for volunteers, but the performance was captured on the video below. (via FACT)

UPDATE: A longer video has surfaced which provides a little more context. Check it out below.

Hackman Set to Drop New Single, Readies Debut LP

After a considerably prolific 2010 and a slightly quieter 2011, 21-year-old producer Hackman has announced the release of his debut LP along with a new single, “Agree to Disagree” b/w “Sunburst.” Both hailing from Ramp‘s PTN arm, the single (which will see a release in the coming weeks) pulls its two tracks from Hackman’s forthcoming full-length, As Above, So Below. If the pair of tunes on the single are any indication, the album will be full of sleek, garage-infused slices of memorable bass music, which is to say, it’s something to look forward to. You can stream the “Radio Edit” of the single’s a-side and check the usual PTN artwork below.

BNJMN Announces Sophomore LP

Bournemouth, England resident and Bubblin’ Up tunesmith Ben Thomas (a.k.a. BNJMN) has just unveiled the details of his next offering of dream-like house music, a nine-track LP called Black Square (pictured above). The record—which is said to find the artist “[evolving] into a more fluid production style, largely by allowing more space into his music”—is scheduled to arrive next month via Amsterdam music hub Rush Hour. While you wait for Black Square to drop, you can check out its tracklist and preview its music below.

Maguett “Loud Bell”

Russia’s relatively fresh G5 (standing for “gimme 5,” of course) imprint passed along this tune from its newest release, a six-track EP from up-and-comer Maguett entitled Twilight. “Loud Bell” is the kind of slow-burner that can either lull you into a head-nodding trance or gradually draw you out of your surroundings and into its futuristic haze. Not to make it sound like Maguett is the kind of producer who conjures up billowy soundscapes; the Russian architectural student instead places his crunchy noise in delicate nooks and crannies, allowing the detailed (albeit sparse) percussion to anchor the tender chords and occasional synth modulations which appear at the song’s edges. And for those who pay close enough attention, there’s even the faintest touch of pitched vocals, adding another subtle layer to this reserved yet intriguing outing.

XLR8R x Beatport: FaltyDL

The Beatport sales charts are often dominated by the latest international club smashes, but its vault of music runs deep and covers a wide variety of artists and sounds, which is why XLR8R has been asked to curate a special two-week series of Beatport charts by some of our favorite DJs and producers. Brooklyn beatmaker FaltyDL may be affiliated with the nebulous world of bass music, but in recent years he’s applied his meticulous methodology to tracks that could be labeled as garage, house, techno, and more. He’s also stepped up his DJ game, and here are 10 of his favorite tools for the dancefloor.

1. Nightmares On Wax “Damn” (Warp Records)
2. Anstam “Baldwin” (50 Weapons)
3. Anthony Shakir “The Floorfiller (Skudge’s Floor Killer Version)” (Rush Hour)
4. 2562 “Cheater” (When In Doubt)
5. DJ Nate “Call Me When You’re Sober” (Planet Mu)
6. Harmonic 313 “Problem 2” (Warp Records)
7. Amon Tobin “Saboteur (Roots Manuva Version)” (Ninja Tune)
8. DJ Food “Turtle Soup (Wagon Christ Mix)” (Ninja Tune)
9. Ceephax Acid Crew “Fantastic Planet” (Breakin Records)
