Samo Sound Boy “Shuffle Code (Ikonika Remix)”

Leading up to the release of Samo Sound Boy‘s Shuffle Code EP earlier this week, it’s safe to say we were caught in a little bit of a Samo Sound Boy-induced frenzy of sorts. Between premiering a stream of the EP a week before its release (which you can still listen to, in full, here) and sharing the mind-bogglingly awesome 16-bit odyssey of a video for the EP’s title track shortly thereafter, we’ve definitely had the LA producer’s dripping dancefloor tunes on our mind. And again, we find ourselves gleefully sharing more Shuffle Code-related goodness with a remix from London’s Ikonika (pictured above), who, for said EP’s final track, skillfully leads “Shuffle Code” into slightly darker and vastly more epic territory. Drexciya Reissues Coming Soon

Sadly, it’s been nearly a decade since early ’90s Detroit techno/electro duo Drexciya last released new music. However, we’ve just discovered that reissues of the pair’s early material will be surfacing in the near future. Clone Classic Cuts, the reissues imprint for Dutch label Clone, announced just yesterday: “We will reissue the early Drexciya catalogue on Clone. We are currently busy restoring the original master tapes, and hopefully we will have the first one ready before the end of the year! Of course, we will keep you updated on the process.” No further details were shared, but the news itself is certainly exciting, to say the least. (via FACT)

George FitzGerald “Fernweh” b/w “Hearts”

For the first release from his own Man Make Music imprint, George FitzGerald has put together two new tracks of absolutely pristine bass music. Equal parts futuristic house and rolling 2-step (with a touch of Detroit-influenced techno), “Fernweh” b/w “Hearts” finds a unique place amongst the many splintered fragments of the UK scene, continuing the Londoner’s reputation as one of the most consistent—albeit not the most prolific—producers to currently hail from his city’s teeming talent pool.

The greater appeal of FitzGerald’s work is not necessarily in the elements which make up his hybrid concoctions, but rather the soulfulness he somehow brings forth from the seemingly cold pieces which comprise the tracks (e.g. the inhumanly perfect percussion, minimal sheen, and machine-precise programming). “Fernweh” is the most obvious example of this, using elongated, dramatic chords and beautifully re-pitched vocal snippets to give the whole affair a captivating, but not overpowering, R&B undercurrent. Careful building and changing of drum patterns supply a bit of tension while the track patiently moves from one section to the next (with no less than two perfectly executed breakdowns), allowing “Fernweh” to slowly develop its two-chord theme into a full eight-plus minute endeavor. B-side “Hearts” takes a much different path to yield similar results, this time focusing the attention on the percussive elements, which, although obviously adhering to a rather strict grid, nonetheless bring an immensely tribal vibe to the procession. In fact, the focus is so much so on the tune’s rhythms that a decent number of bars are solely dedicated to showcasing the bouncing kicks, claps, hats, shakers, and bells that drive “Hearts.” By the time FitzGerald slyly drops a half-time snare into the mix, it’s a safe bet that dancefloors and head-nodding bass music fiends alike will be powerless to resist. Let’s hope founding his own imprint will ensure many more forthcoming releases of the same quality, and if we’re lucky, maybe even with a little more frequency.

Health “Goth Star (Pictureplane Cover)”

Two Lovepump labelmates go head-to-head here, as LA noise quartet Health hands over a slow-bouncing cover of “Goth Star” by Denver-based dance experimentalist Pictureplane. The Fleetwood Mac-sampling tune is reformatted to make room for some booming live drums, ethereal vocal melodies, and just a touch of jangly guitar. It’s not a far cry from producer Travis Egedy’s original Dark Rift cut, but it’s nonetheless a fine update of the already stellar song. (via Stereogum)

Listen to Oneman’s and Jackmaster’s b2b Set from Notting Hill Carnival 2011

Last week, London DJ extraordinaire Oneman put together a special Skanking Session in advance of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival festivities. At the carnival itself, he got behind the decks on the main stage with Jackmaster. Together, the pair’s DJ skills are almost unparalleled, and this time around, the duo’s DJ session also included live vocals from Jessie Ware and MC Asbo. More details can be found here on the Red Bull Music Academy Radio website, and the set is streaming below. We recommend that you find 60 minutes in your day to give it a listen.

Sun Glitters “Too Much to Lose (Regal Safari Remix)”

The heavenly “Too Much to Loose” (the video for which you can watch here) seems to be the Sun Glitters song of choice for tender beatmeakers to show off their remixing chops. Case in point, we have this rework from Brighton-based outfit Regal Safari (pictured above, kind of), which follows closely on the heels of Halls’ blissful reimagining of the very same tune just last week. Whereas Halls took the opportunity to take “Too Much to Lose” further into the ether, Regal Safari sharpens things up a bit, implementing some precise drum work to push the otherwise cloud-like outing farther into more head-nodding territory than ever before. And in other blissful beatmaker news, all of the aforementioned parties will be appearing at London’s Binnacle festival, which will be taking place October 15 and 16 with a rather stacked list of performers that includes Seams, Essay, Taragana Pyjarama, Phanes, Tropics, and many more. You’ll find the full details and line-up after the jump.

Blind Benny “Bad Dreams (Doctor Jeep ReFix)”

It has been a while since we last heard from Doctor Jeep, but we’re glad to see the young East Coast producer once again, this time with a slick reworking of arty indie-pop group Blind Benny in hand. Grabbing our attention right from the start, Doctor Jeep begins the remix in dark, futuristic R&B territory, matching a rolling kick pattern with pitched-up vocal snippets and a massive-sounding set of organ chords. Then as the initial build-up reaches its apex, the floor drops out from under us, and we fall directly into a propulsive hybrid of UK-influenced house and rave-inspired electro. Doctor Jeep’s remix serves as the closing number for Blind Benny’s recently released Lucid EP (artwork above), which also features a sampling of other remixes from several up-and-coming producers.

James Blake Announces New EP

After following up his polarizing debut LP with a starkly minimal single for Untold’s Hemlock imprint, James Blake has announced a new EP which appears to find the wunderkind/indie darling again exploring the slow, vocal-oriented songs which defined his self-titled album. The Enough Thunder EP is said to come complete with four new originals, as well as Blake’s recent collaboration with folksy auto-tune crooner (yes, we know that’s confusing) Bon Iver and his sought-after—in certain circles—cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” You can stream both of those cuts and check the EP’s rather dramatic artwork below. Enough Thunder will see a release October 10 via the Atlas label.
