Shlohmo Drops FACT Mix, Prepares for North American Tour

Following on the heels of his freshly released Bad Vibes LP, California beatsmith Shlohmo has dropped a diverse, syrupy mix for FACT‘s ongoing mix series. Not happy to simply present the sounds of the LA-and-beyond beat scene he’s often associated with, Shlohmo has instead turned in an adventurous mix that touches on everything from fellow off-kilter beat heads Asura and Groundislava to slowed-the-fuck-down hip-hop and R&B from the likes of Three Six Mafia, Monica, and The Clipse. Just to keep things interesting, contributions from Charles Manson (yes, that Charles Manson) and Tom Waits somehow find their way onto the tracklist as well. You can stream/download the mix and check out a short interview here, and make sure to peep Shlohmo’s upcoming fall live dates with the likes of Shigeto and Star Slinger (or, as we’d like to call it, the “Alliteration Tour”) below.

Listen to Albert Swarm’s ‘Held’ EP

We don’t like to make a habit of posting streaming audio from relatively unknown artists, but we think you’ll agree that Finnish producer Albert Swarm isn’t your average newcomer. The anonymous tunesmith (no, Albert Swarm isn’t his real name) just unveiled his first proper release, a five-track EP called Held (pictured above), this week as the fourth record from fledgling Brooklyn imprint Ceremony. It’s a sizable debut full of classically inspired, impeccably produced beatscapes, and certainly leaves us wondering what will come next from this talented musician. Listen to Albert Swarm’s Held EP below.

Mule Musiq to Release Collaborative Album From Koss, Minilogue, and Sebastian Mullaert

Japanese minimal techno outpost Mule Musiq has quite the endeavor set to be unveiled at the tail end of 2011, a seven-track collaborative “jam” LP by producers Koss, Minilogue, and Sebastian Mullaert. Called The Möllan Sessions (pictured above), the album is said to be born of “five long days and nights… in a studio where they jammed without any plan in mind.” Minilogue says of those recording sessions, “All of us love to be spontaneous, and do things in the moment, so we just hooked up our instruments and started jamming. We threw a dice to see in which tempo the track should be in, so everything was made out of the present moment. No thoughts about how and when, no plans. We just let the music flow through us.” The record will be available physically on October 24 and digitally on November 21, but you can check out the full tracklist before then, below.

2. Hello People of Earth!

XLR8R’s Ultimate Burning Man Survival Guide

Next Monday, the annual Burning Man festival kicks off in the middle of the Nevada desert. Free spirits and playa warriors from around the globe have already begun to descend on Black Rock City, but we here at XLR8R wanted to weigh in before the festivities got started. After scouring the web, checking out the various camps, and perusing the litany of party lineups, we’ve put together this can’t-miss guide on how best to revel in the majesty and magic of Burning Man.

Tip #1: Don’t go.

Beaty Heart “2Good (Jam City Remix)”

This strangely deep slow jam here is a characteristically sparse and bright remix from Night Slugs champion Jam City for the boys of Peckham-based art-pop outfit Beaty Heart (pictured above). Before that noisy rock band hits the road for a few dates with The Rapture in September, the UK DJ/producer turned over this version of “2Good,” which gradually morphs from an exhibition of half-time rhythms and slow-swelling synths into a lushly melodic tune full of piano refrains and gauzy atmospheres.

Contakt & Mayster Korak EP

On one hand, the Korak EP is a completely sensible release, the latest salvo from global-bass hub Dutty Artz, here electing to shine a light on some tunes from fellow New Yorkers Contakt and Mayster, two of the folks behind the monthly TURRBOTAX® party in Brooklyn, which just so happens to be celebrating its two-year anniversary tonight. Then again, it’s a bit of a head scratcher, as Dutty Artz releases—most of which focus on beats and rhythms either emanating from or strongly influenced by Latin America and Africa—are rarely this straightforward in terms of their dancefloor prowess. While the imprint’s white-label release from Dubbel Dutch earlier this year resides in similar sonic territory, the Korak EP does stick out like the proverbial sore thumb in the Dutty Artz discography.

That said, the four-song EP is an undeniably strong release. On his past solo efforts, Contakt—who, in the interest of full disclosure, does work at XLR8R—has skillfully interweaved Detroit-style synths with more upfront, UK-influenced rhythms, with an end result that is often smooth, precise, and melodically driven. Perhaps it’s the influence of Mayster, but Korak is decidedly tougher, with harder, more organic, and, yes, slightly tribal drum sounds. (No, the Tarzan-referencing song titles “Korak” and “Opar” are not completely random.) The first minutes of “Korak” offer a hard-hitting whirlwind of clanging drum sounds, gradually folding in thudding bass notes and miniscule synth stabs before the song’s principal, high-pitched melody is unveiled. The track is almost a throwback to the drum-heavy sounds of first-wave UK funky, yet skillfully avoids sounding dated. “Opar” relies on a similar sound palette, although the tune has a more defined groove and instead hints at ’90s house while riding its melody and chunky bassline.

Rounding out the EP are two remixes, the first from the UK’s Doc Daneeka, who gives “Opar” a steppier feel with his rolling drum sounds. The man’s drum programming is always compellingly on point, and he doesn’t fall short here. Dutty Artz label head Matt Shadetek tackles “Korak,” with his remix—which you can download here—flipping the song into a tribal guarachero style. The loping beats actually fit the song rather well, especially with his addition of some playfully bubbling synth notes. Not surprisingly, it’s the most “Dutty Artz” selection on the EP; perhaps this release does makes sense after all.

2562 to Drop ‘Fever Addendum’ 12″

Dub-technoist 2562 (a.k.a. A Made Up Sound a.k.a. Dave Huismans) will follow the release of his Fever LP from earlier this year (not to mention the pretty rad podcast he did for XLR8R) with a half-reissue, half-remix 12″. Huismans’ own When in Doubt imprint will drop the record, which features an extended version of album cut “Aquatic Family Affair” and a remix of “Wasteland” by Head High (a.k.a. Shed), on September 5. You can stream previews of each tune below.

Ambassadeurs “Rössler”

Brighton’s Mark Dobson is Ambassadeurs, a moniker with which he explores the possibilities of neon-soaked, soundsystem-specific music production. “Rössler,” from Dobson’s forthcoming Come a Little Closer EP, exhibits the artist’s strong points within that medium, as lazer-tinged bass tones, skittering hip-hop beats, 8-bit synth noises, steel-drum melodies, and flurries of sliced-and-diced samples interplay within the track’s syrupy groove. Look for the rest of this business when it’s available on October 10 via Jalapeño Records.
