Solomun and Stimming to Release Split EP

Continuing their longstanding collaborative relationship, Hamburg’s Mladen Solomun (a.k.a. Solomun, pictured above) and Martin Stimming (a.k.a. Stimming) have just announced a new split EP, Challenge Everyday, their first since 2008’s Trilogy EP. Containing four dance cuts and one light-hearted intro, the EP breaks down pretty easily into two sides: the dark tech-funk of Solomun’s “See You Everyday Alone” and the acoustic shimmer of Stimming’s “Challenge the Air.” Challenge Everyday drops September 26 on Solomun’s Diynamic imprint, but in the meantime, check out the tracklisting and album art below.

Auntie Flo “Oh My Days (Alejandro Paz Remix)”

Back in March, Glaswegian producer Auntie Flo and the Huntleys & Palmers imprint caught our attention in a major way with “Highlife”, an African-tinged house tune with rolling tribal percussion which headlined the first release for the party-turned-label. This month, both Auntie Flo and Huntleys & Palmers are back with more, namely the “Oh My Days” single, which also includes an interesting b-side from South Africa’s DJ Sdunkero. The record will drop in the next week or so, but here we have a remix of “Oh My Days” by Chilean Alejandro Paz, who also has a future H&P release in the works. Clearly this is a crew that doesn’t have a whole lot of regard for geographical boundaries, as Paz keeps the original’s sticky vocal loop but adds a bit more African flavor to the proceedings in the form of stuttering, kwaito-ish drums and some hooky guitar bits. For a closer comparison, we recommend that you download Paz’s remix below and then watch the fun-loving video for the original “Oh My Days,” which is posted after the jump.

Star Slinger to Tour North America

UK beatmaker Star Slinger has been busy during the last year, dropping musicvideos, originaltunes, and remixing the likes of Gold Panda, Daedelus, Washed Out, and others. Although he’s known more for his exploits as a bedroom producer, this fall he’s getting out of the house and taking his hip-hop-infused electronic pop creations across the pond to North America. Over the course of his 30-plus date tour, he’ll be joined by artists such as Shlohmo and Mux Mool while criss-crossing the continent. The full list of tour dates is posted below.

Myrryrs “Feel U (Voltron’s Another Love Lost Remix)”

On August 25, blog-cum-label Discobelle will drop its latest release, a six-track EP from US artist Myrryrs (artwork above). Though it’s not amongst the official remixes included on the record (tracks from Samo Soundboy, Clicks & Whistles, and Teki Latex & Bambounou), this version of “Feel U” by Ghent’s Voltron (who also co-founded the excellent Silverback imprint) reps the same kind of forward-thinking club sounds, albeit with a noticeably darker edge. In all actuality, “Feel U (Voltron’s Another Love Lost Remix)” sounds a whole hell of a lot like a sped-up Holy Other track, which is totally okay.

Various Artists Total 12

It was just one year after Kompakt was established in 1998 that the label began issuing it’s yearly Total compilation series. Acting as a kind of global communique from its Cologne headquarters, the Total comps helped to indoctrinate an entire generation of non-12″-buying listeners to the new sound of German electronic music. And much like the label that spawned it, the Total series has managed to remain relatively consistent. The latest, Total 12, maintains this consistency, but at the expense of the experimental and innovative spirit at the heart of previous Total releases.

What isn’t missing, however, is the eclecticism of the series. Total 12 manages to touch on almost every style covered by Kompakt, from churning, melodic electronic pop to ambient exercises in sound design. Yet, unlike previous years, this eclecticism doesn’t seem as fresh, coming off rather as variations on the same comfortable sound palette.

That’s not to say the compilation is bad—it’s not. Containing a number of exclusives, as well as some joints that have been burning up dancefloors all summer, Total 12 does have its moments. Label mainstay Superpitcher drops an absolute bomb of an after-hours cut with “White Lightning”; Chilean oddball Matias Aguayo manages to channel the ghost of Frank Zappa on organ-heavy psychedelic freak-out “I Don’t Smoke”; and recent Visionquest signees Tale of Us somehow manage to convert GusGus’s bloated vocal-trance anthem “Over” into a weirdo tech-house-not-tech-house track with their “Life and Death Remix.” And what of the exclusives? Admittedly, not every one of them is a winner, but “Remodernist,” the return of Joerg Burger’s The Modernist alias, ranks as one of the compilation’s higher points, complete with “Big Fun” stabs and a complex, evolving soundscape.

However, the rest of the 12-track compilation is a strange grab bag. Take Wolfgang Voigt’s “Frieden,” which strives unsuccessfully to mine similar ground as last year’s “Clara Wieck,” albeit with an injected preciousness that just doesn’t feel like it belongs. Similarly, Brazilian minimal superstar Gui Boratto’s entry, “The Drill,” falls short trying to hide a lazy idea behind a posturing, and ultimately flaccid, digital overdrive.

If well produced—and sometimes overproduced—melodic techno is your thing, then you’ll probably enjoy the entirety of Total 12. The less hardcore might be better off cherry-picking the aforementioned positively reviewed singles from their favorite distribution service.

Video: Fatima “Mind”

This homespun video piece is for a tune from Swedish vocalist Fatima‘s Follow You EP, which came out earlier this year via Floating Points’ and Alex Nut’s Eglo label. Shown in a constant split screen, the singer struts around the Ridley Road Market in Dalston, Hackney, crooning along with her “Mind” track amongst the rampant graffiti, street vendors, and others who dwell within London’s urban landscape.

Balam Acab “Motion”

Here, we have yet another track to surface from the debut LP by 20-year-old producer Alec Koone (a.k.a. Balam Acab), the mysterious and utterly gorgeous Wander / Wonder (pictured above). The Mechanicsburg, PA native has let go of “Motion,” possibly the most upbeat and brightly shimmering selection from his forthcoming record for Tri Angle. There are even parts of this tune (like the sweeping strings) reminiscent of something from a Rodgers & Hammerstein soundtrack for a classic Disney film. If that’s not magical, we don’t know what is. Scuba to Release New Single

UK-based producer and Hotflush label head Paul Rose has just announced the release of three-track single “Adrenelin,” his first release as Scuba since last year’s well-received Triangluation LP. Continuing in the more dancefloor-centric sound he began flirting with under his SCB moniker—see the excellent “Loss” b/w “Futureunknown,” released earlier this year on Aus Music—”Adrenelin” is a sonic collage of styles that combines the vocal manipulation of dubstep and garage with moments of Visionquest-style tech-house, ’90s trance, and classic freestyle. “Adrenelin” drops September 26 on Hotflush, but in the meantime, check out the album art and tracklist below.

Walls “Sunporch (Holy Other Remix)”

The two Londoners of production outfit Walls (pictured above) are just over a month away from dropping their second LP, Coracle, via the illustrious Kompakt label. Here, that record’s first single, “Sunporch,” gets a brooding rework from Tri Angle Records’ anonymous tunesmith Holy Other, who slows the bright and airy elements of the original to a syrupy crawl.
