Beans “Blue Movie (Salva Remix)”

If you’ll remember back to the beginning of 2011, we weren’t exactly pleased with the latest LP to come from Anti-Pop Consortium cohort Beans, End it All. And it wasn’t necessarily because the music was bad, it was more that the MC and the various producers’ instrumental tracks didn’t mesh all that well. Before Salva heads out on a lengthy North American tour at the end of this month, the DJ/producer/Frite Nite label head has elected to try his hand at mixing his glistening, club-ready sonics with the MC’s left-of-center flow. Let’s just say that a few more cuts like “Blue Movie (Salva Remix)” wouldn’t have hurt Beans’ LP in the least bit. Tour dates are after the jump.

Here’s the latest from Montreal beat maestro Lunice and Glasgow tune hub LuckyMe, a slick video piece for the lead track from the producer’s One Hunned EP, which is out today. Watch Lunice bust a move or two in the dark with the sparkly “Glow” jam providing the soundtrack as smoky images and colorful lights wash over him, all orchestrated tastefully by director Adam Saewitz.

Podcast 211: Magda

Top-notch DJs and producers are often known for their globe-trotting ways, but Magda takes it to another level. Born in Poland, she came of age in Detroit and was eventually adopted by Richie Hawtin and the rest of the Minus Records crew. Now living in Berlin, she’s been in the news as of late after the (somewhat surprising) announcement that she was leaving Minus after more than a decade and instead focusing on Items & Things, a label she runs with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce. Although the split was amicable, it does represent the start of an important new chapter in the techno veteran’s career, so we figured that now would be a good time for her to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. True to form, Magda has delivered a deep, complex mix that often features three our four tracks playing at once while she combines techno—of both the pulsing Detroit and minimal variety—with bits of house, disco, and a few other surprises. Magda’s future may be wide open, but there is little doubt that her DJ abilities are still on-point.

Jason Burns “See Thru You (Distal Remix)”

Today brings the debut EP from an up-and-coming producer based in Cleveland, Ohio by the name of Jason Burns. The three-track See Thru You isn’t exactly as sunny as the above artwork would lead you to believe, but actually follows suit with the dark and deeply soulful “Back 2 You” cut we shared a while back. The same goes for this solid rework of Burns’ title track by busy Atlanta tunesmith Distal—who, incidentally, has his own EP on the way via Grizzly, as well as a new, two-track 12″ coming from Tectonic. Needless to say, we’re happy to hear these two promising artists join forces on this hard-hitting and touching production.

See Thru You (Distal Remix)

Sepalcure Love Pressure Remixed

It’s a bit strange that Sepalcure would choose to release Love Pressure Remixed now, 14 months after the original EP first appeared. Over the past year, the Brooklyn-based duo of Travis Stewart (a.k.a. Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (a.k.a. Braille) has not only dropped another EP, Fleur, but both producers have also released various solo offerings. So why elect to revisit the not-so-distant past?

Listening to Love Pressure Remixed, the answer never really becomes clear. Although the quality of the remixers enlisted is impressive, none of the five tracks here is exactly essential. The EP includes three versions of “Love Pressure,” all of which beef up the airy, melodic spirit of the original. Toronto’s XI delivers a dramatic version with dense, ominous bass tones and winding synths that vaguely recall the golden days of G-funk. FaltyDL keeps the song closer to home, layering its vocal bits and light synths over rolling garage percussion. The most radical “Love Pressure” transformation comes from Lando Kal, who steers things in a darker direction, stripping out most of the track’s “pretty” elements and inserting rubbery basslines and sharp 808 sounds.

Love Pressure Remixed also includes reworks from Detroit electro-funk don Jimmy Edgar and LA’s Daedelus. Edgar twists “Every Day of My Life” into a soulful, workmanlike house cut full of deep, warbling synths. On the other hand, Daedelus’ take on “Down” is the most “out there” song on the EP, and perhaps the most entertaining, simply because it offers such a change from the expected. While his hyperactive remix may not be suitable for most DJ sets, it somehow manages to dabble in footwork, drum & bass, classic rave, and plain-old beat experimentalism in less than four minutes.

As a whole, Love Pressure Remixed certainly isn’t a bad release. The remixes here are all average or better, but the question of “why?” and, more importantly, “why now?” hasn’t really been answered, and unfortunately overshadows the music itself.

Listen to Planet Mu Boss Mike Paradinas’ FACT Mix

The man behind what is possibly the electronic music world’s biggest supporter of the footwork scene, UK label Planet Mu, is also responsible for the latest FACT mix, which is chock full of the sound he so tirelessly champions. Mike Paradinas’ DJ set is a monster mix that features 38 (!) tunes from both the elite and the up-and-coming figures of one of Chicago’s signature musical exports—including DJ Roc, DJ Rashad, Tha Pope, DJ Diamond, and DJ Earl—along with an assortment of artists influenced by the genre’s skittering rhythms and off-kilter production style. You can get more info on the Planet Mu owner’s podcast here, and stream/download it below.

Skanky “Ghost”

London resident Louis Johnson (a.k.a. Skanky) just dropped the latest release from burgeoning Aussie imprint Templar Sound, the five-track Blind Spot EP (artwork above), which boasts three original tracks along with remixes from LOL Boys and Visionist. “Ghost” isn’t found amongst the music on that new record, but it is a prime example of the producer’s kind of emotive, bass-centric club tunes. Grab the track below and if it leaves you craving more, the entire Blind Spot EP is streaming here. Skanky also has a video of the EP’s title track—which, incidentally, samples this ’90s-R&B cut. Watch it after the jump.

Ital “Only For Tonight”

You likely don’t need to be reminded of one of dance music’s latest trends: Nascent bedroom producers using house rhythms as a skeleton to wrap their swirling synthscapes and borrowed vocal samples around. Teengirl Fantasy did it especially well with last year’s memorable “Cheaters,” Brooklyn duo Blondes is dropping a few records this year in that vein, and newcomers Grown Folk have shown strong potential by trimming down the haze to exhibit more clear-headed grooves. Mi Ami frontman Daniel Martin-McCormick tries his hand at the style on his latest solo outing as Ital, the “Only For Tonight” 12″, and the results are exciting, to be sure.

The record features two versions of Ital’s tune, an instrumental mix and the “Saviour’s Love Megamix.” The instrumental version is denoted as the original, but it’s the megamix that steals the show here, thanks to a blistering vocal performance ripped from Candi Staton’s 1986 cut “You Got the Love.” Though it’s certainly not the first time the diva’s voice has livened up a mix, Ital breathes new fire into the soul of those timeless vocal melodies with dense layers of analog synth haze, busied dance beats, and an anthemic bassline. Alternately, Staton’s voice helps give Martin-McCormick’s instrumental track some direction. Those hooks tie together the drifty, relatively structureless seven minutes of “Only For Tonight” in a way that’s reminiscent of both the classic sounds it references and the contemporaries with which it shares ideas. It’s an enticing and complimentary match, one that we look forward to hearing progress further on whatever Ital does next.
