Sheen Bros. “It’s So Hot (The Miracles Club Remix)”

Coming next week from Scion A/V’s oft-reliable singles series is a collaborative tune by Cosmo Baker and 4th Pyramid, who have donned the moniker Sheen Bros. for their joint productions. The duo’s “It’s So Hot” tune, which features vocals from Greg Nice, will drop on August 2, along with this piano-heavy remix from Portland house revivalists The Miracles Club. The classically minded track is full of the outfit’s trademark sounds: Funky basslines, bouncing drum-machine rhythms, bubbly percussion, and smooth melodies abound here. We look forward to hearing the original and more when this record is available.

Various Detroit Nu.Wav

If there were ever a label to give the face of Detroit techno a makeover, it would undoubtedly be Carl Craig’s Planet E imprint. Craig has probably done more than any other producer, DJ, remixer, or label head in the Motor City to keep the style as pure as it’s always been yet also as relevant and progressive as its original founders prophesied. And all that is particularly why Planet E’s latest venture, Detroit Nu.Wav, is so confounding. From the outset, Detroit Nu.Wav‘s artwork looks like it was created in the pre-internet age of underground raves, and the accompanying promo video (posted below) does more to hold up the aesthetic tenets of a bygone musical era than push anything forward (the driving idea behind all electronic music, right?). The name itself, too, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the past with a futuristic update. So where do we go from here?

Well, if you’re expecting an entirely new direction for the New Dance Sound of Detroit, then you’re probably going to be disappointed. However, if you’re just looking for some straight-up Detroit techno (with a touch of jazzy house, occasionally), then you’ll be happy with these four tracks from four different producers. Reference’s “Another Place” takes a hard and driving tack, with a focus on gritty drums as a distant piano melody plinks along in the background. Oliverwho Factory’s “Jealousy” also does a fine job of keeping it dark and hard, but with a warm female vocal firmly planting it in ’90s-style techno territory. On the flip, Ezana Harris offers up a jazzy slice that’s nice and chill with “I Am Ready,” but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. If anything, it’s former XLR8R scribe Monty Luke’s “Futura” that takes the most forward-looking approach of the four, embracing a more minimal vibe that feels less like the Detroit of old and more like the Berlin of today, but with more bounce. Again, all in all, a good-enough collection of tracks, but given the ballyhoo associated with the release—and the new tangent we were expecting—the pay-off might seem a little ho-hum.

The Black Dog to Drop New 12″

Seminal UK production trio The Black Dog has announced it will soon release a fresh two-track record via its own Sheffield-based imprint, Dust Science. Entitled Liber Temple, the 12″ follows the outfit’s Liber Kult single as part of a “series of releases that are purely aimed at the dancefloor.” The Black Dog’s new record will be available on September 5, but you can check out the artwork and stream snippets of each track before then, below.

Beacon “Got Mine”

It can at times seem overwhelming to keep up with the pace that the UK churns out new beatmakers, but it usually proves worth the effort, as, more often than not, one can happen upon some really talented producers while looking for fresh names within the bass music spectrum. One such name is Beacon, a young producer with a handful of promising tracks to be heard on his SoundCloud, the latest of which he’s offered up for download here. With its pitched vocal refrain and tuned percussion, “Got Mine” is a slice of Night Slugs-style bass with a touch of Mount Kimbie and a hint of [name-another-well-regarded-UK-post-dubstepper here]. That’s not to say that Beacon’s work is a complete derivative, but rather it’s a new amalgamation of the sound permeating throughout the forward-thinking UK music culture, one he seems to understand enough to move beyond replication and begin the process of leaving his own imprint. With his “Got Mine” white label on its way and a forthcoming release for the Seinan Music label due sometime in the future, we suggest you keep your eyes and ears open for more.

Theme Park “Wax (Halls Remix)”

South Londoner Halls (pictured above) has taken this bubbly indie-pop tune from Theme Park deep down into the dark, desolate cave where we imagine he makes all of his tracks. Slowing “Wax” down enough to feel like it’s effortlessly floating, Halls laces the song with layers of gorgeous pads that build and bellow as they gradually turn in baths of reverb. Theme Park’s vocals serve as the only obvious trace of the original track, and even they are generously processed and slowed down, rendering them even the more intimate. Like most things we’ve come to expect from Halls, there is a certain amount of introspective feeling buried beneath the lush soundscapes and occasional skitters which mark this remix, and “Wax” is certainly better for it.

Strangeloop Releases New A/V Project for Brainfeeder

Best known as Brainfeeder‘s resident live visual artist, Strangeloop has recently released his second A/V endeavor for FlyLo’s imprint, entitled Fields. This time around, Strangeloop matches his otherworldly visuals with much less beat-oriented music, and instead delving into sparser sounds, characterized by lush soundscapes and meandering synth lines. Not unsurprisingly, much of Fields was inspired by an “altered state of consciousness,” during which Strangeloop, “heard a composition which he tried to recreate directly after, resulting in a fluctuating subliminal epic in three sprawling and unique movements: 1. Plants Inside 2. Ghostlines and 3. Becoming Fields. The three tracks correspond to three movements within a psychedelic trip, of initial birth/constellation, then death/dissolution, then finally a transcendental union of both.” To get a better grasp of what that all means, we suggest you check the preview video below, or head over to Fields-TV, the project’s interactive web experience (from which we pulled the above image).

Riton Launches His Own Label With “Dark Place”

London-based tech-house giant Riton (a.k.a. Henry Smithson) just announced the launch of his “almost eponymous” new label, Ritontime. With it he promises a new release every month, beginning with his own 12″, “Dark Place,” due on August 15. “I’ve got 500 GB of audio files, every drum break and drum machine hit, 25 analog synthesizers, a microphone, and a fast internet connection,” says Smithson. “The plan is to release a double a-side single every month from now until I’ve cleared my hard drive of the 356 unfinished Logic sessions I’ve been stashing since 2008.” Sounds like a good idea to us! Among the things kicking around on his hard drive are collaborations with the likes of Canblaster, Cocknbullkid, Sneaky Sound System, and Scru Fizza. So look for those in the months to follow and “Dark Place,” whose tracklist you can check out below, in August.

Tracklisting:
1. Dark Place (Feat. Shani Cuppcake)
2. A.C.P.
3. Dark Place (Wafa Remix)
