Check Out Julio Bashmore’s Remix of Classixx

Back in March, LA duo Classixx unveiled “Into the Valley,” a bouncy slice of disco- and electro-flavored house that was released for free through the Green Label Sound imprint. Since then, they’ve trotted out a rework from Yacht, and today, a remix from UK producer Julio Bashmore has been added to the mix. The Bristol-based artist strips down the track to its soulful essentials, placing the vocals of Karl Dixon in the spotlight and propping them up with an uplifting piano melody. It’s an impressive remodel, resulting in a tune that quite possibly surpasses Classixx’s original. The Julio Bashmore remix is streaming below, and can be downloaded for free at the Green Label Sound website.

Hyperdub to Release New Single From D.O.K.

Heady and theoretical dubstep-not-dubstep label Hyperdub has been on a roll lately with a string of fine releases in 2011 from the likes of Kode9 and The Spaceape (featured on XLR8R‘s cover), Burial, and Funkystepz. Now, they can add veteran East London grime producer D.O.K. to their quickly expanding, genre-defying roster. Once associated with Aftershock, Terror Danjah‘s now-defunct scene-defining grime label, D.O.K. is set to release his Hyperdub debut in the form of the West Coast EP. Picking up from where he left off, West Coast takes his grime sound and trips it out to fit the Hyperdub aesthetic. The West Coast EP doesn’t come out until June 27, but check below for a taste of “West Coast VIP,” the record’s artwork, and a full tracklisting.

Comma “Mezcal Hologram (Om Unit Remix)”

Last month XLR8R shared Comma‘s “Ken Griffey Jr.” in advance of his now-released Colortronics on Frite Nite. To celebrate the drop of the EP yesterday, Comma has offered up another teaser, the Om Unit remix of “Mezcal Hologram.” The track is a claustrophobic nightmare—the aural equivalent of an immense room in infinite contraction, as an expansive dub-acoustic cavern is manifested and then slowly reduced to a minuscule and anxiety-ridden size through frenetically skittering hi-hats. Download “Mezcal Hologram (Om Unit Remix)” below and pick up the Colortronics EP, which is also available as a special limited-edition cassette from Frite Nite. (via FACT)

Samiyam “Cushion”

Chances are that if you cared to know about the next album from LA beatmaker Samiyam, you’re already aware that it’ll be released next month by Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. So, you’re probably down to hear a track from Sam Baker’s Album, right? You’re also probably hoping to hear some head-knocking, smoked-out instrumental hip-hop, yeah? Well, you’ve come to the right place. “Cushion” (emphasis on the “cush” part, we assume) is pure Samiyam/Brainfeeder/LA beat-scene music: broken beats, massive bass, wonky noise, and just enough melody to hum along to. We expect much more of the same when the other 16 tracks of Sam Baker’s album are made available on June 28.

Brenmar to Drop Next EP Via Grizzly

Apparently, there’s no stopping the onslaught of Brenmar in 2011. Podcast 199: Rod Modell’s MUTEK Mix

Next week, Montreal will play host to the 12th annual MUTEK festival, which always serves as one of the year’s premiere showcases for techno and forward-thinking electronic sounds. In hopes of getting everyone as much in the MUTEK spirit as we are, we decided to enlist one of the festival’s heavyweights for the XLR8R podcast series. And who answered the call? Detroit techno veteran Rod Modell, best known for his work as Deepchord and as one half of Echospace with Steve Hitchell. Deepchord presents Echospace will be performing live as part of MUTEK’s Nocturne 03 event—a party that also features a live set from Plastikman—and Modell has put together a preview of sorts with this exclusive mix, a session of dark and dubby techno that digs heavily into his own catalog. Highlighted by its incessant pulse, underwater synth melodies, and ever-present sense of foreboding, the podcast also serves as a primer for Modell’s forthcoming Deepchord album, Hash-Bar Loops, which is slated for a July 4 release on the long-standing Soma label.

Mackie Onyx Blackjack USB Audio Interface

If you are in the market for an affordable and portable audio interface, Mackie’s new Onyx Blackjack (MSRP: $149.99) should be on your shortlist. The Blackjack is a 2×2 USB audio interface in a compact and rugged package. Performance-wise, the real winners here are the pre-amps, which have lots of clean gain and an impressive amount of usable dynamic range for an interface at this price. The self noise is really low as well, and with the gain cranked up, static remains in check, keeping the bad kind of noise out or your recordings. It’s missing a few connectivity options, like MIDI and S/DPIF, and you are stuck with 48 kHz as the highest sample rate, but it’s rare to have it all for under $150. As a nice touch, the unit is tilted forward for a handy desktop orientation that for most home or mobile applications will be an ergonomic and physical workflow advantage.
