Watch a Video for Buraka Som Sistema’s New Single

Portuguese production outfit Buraka Som Sistema has announced it has a new single up its sleeve in the form of “Hangover (BaBaBa),” and has dropped this video to prepare the masses. Featuring some nifty video editing, which turns a number of unsuspecting onlookers into rhythmic dance machines, the clip for this straight-up party anthem is exactly what you would expect—warm colors, views of (to us) foreign urban cultures, and, of course, a heavy dose of ass-shaking. The single, slated for a June 6 release on the Enchufada imprint, features the original track along with three remixes, and is said to precede a forthcoming Buraka Som Sistema album to be out sometime later this year. You can check the single’s artwork and tracklist below.

Tracklist:
1. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Original)
2. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Radio Edit)
3. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Instrumental)
4. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Tony Senghore Remix)
5. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Oui’Wack Remix)
6. Hangover (BaBaBa) (Swick Remix)

Pioneer DJM-2000

The DJM-2000 (MSRP: $2999) sits atop Pioneer‘s DJ line, and with good reason: This beast is about as heavy duty as mixers come. The first thing you notice on its huge face is the sizable multi-touch, multi-function screen sitting just above the crossfader. This amazingly responsive and reliable screen can be used to trigger tracks in Traktor, function like a Kaoss Pad (to control oscillators, a re-sampler, and pitch/gate effects) in the mix, and give the user precise control over the balance of the sound over seven bands of EQ. It has eight channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio on board, along with a rack of highly programmable and customizable beat and harmony effects. There’s a lot of mixer here (more than 20 lbs. worth, in fact), and it’s certainly not cheap. But if you’re looking for a high-end mixer with every bell and whistle known to DJs—and especially if you’re already a user of Pioneer’s CDJs—you won’t be disappointed.

Boddhi Satva “Who Am I (feat. Athenai & C. Robert Walker) (c2 Version Mix)”

There are only a few situations where we’ll post a track that features slam poetry-esque vocals so prominently in the mix, and a new Carl Craig (pictured above) remix is one of them. This chunk of Afro-centric deep house comes to us from the forthcoming mix CD Mad Styles and Crazy Visions 2, a session compiled by house veteran and Masters of Work alum Louie Vega. Beginning with a solitary chord stab and distant percussion, Craig methodically adds subtle elements as the empowering vocals of Boddhi Satva‘s original run their course from verse to chorus and back again. The track seems almost at a standstill for the first three minutes, never even approaching a climax until Craig begins to hint at what’s to come with a tantalizing tambourine. Then the full drums hit with a giant kick and shuffling hi-hat pattern which, like most things from the Planet E label head, is impossible to resist. Mad Styles and Crazy Visions 2, a long overdue follow-up to Vega’s first volume which appeared back in ’98, is set to be released June 6.

Stream Lil Silva’s ‘Patience’ EP Before it Drops on Monday

UK funky fan, bass music obsessive, and club tune champion Lil Silva has finally readied a follow-up EP to last year’s Night Skanker record for Night Slugs, a four-song release for the burgeoning Good Years label, called Patience. That EP (a couple tracks from which we’ve already heard as part of Lil Silva’s XLR8Rpodcast) drops on vinyl and digital formats this coming Monday, but we can listen to the whole thing now, thanks to FACT. Below, you can stream the four hyped-up dancefloor heaters that make up the Patience EP, including a track with vocalist and frequent SBTRKT collaborator Sampha, “On Your Own.”

Zed Bias and Steve Gurley Ready Collaborative 12″

Prolific multi-pseudonymed UK producer Dave Jones (a.k.a Zed Bias a.k.a. Maddslinky, pictured above) has teamed up with respected UK bass figure Steve Gurley for a collaborative 12″ for the Keysound imprint, entitled “Roll.” The two have apparently been trading musical ideas since they met back in the mid-’90s, while Gurley was making the transition from his earlier work in the jungle outfit Foul Play to the garage-style sounds he is better known for and while Jones was just beginning his path as an up-and-coming producer. Apparently, those beats and breaks the two were trading on floppy discs over a decade ago have served as the inspiration for this latest collaboration, which is said to still be very much a current slice of UK bass music, complete with “garage swing, vocoder funk, jungle rudeness, and an edginess straight out of the ‘roots of’ era dubstep.” The “Roll” 12″, whose b-side features a remix from Keysound label head Blackdown, has no specific release date set yet, but can be expected some time in late May or early June.

Vessel “Ton”

Another artist in Bristol’s fine crop of bass wranglers is producer Sebastian Gainsbrough (a.k.a. Vessel), who drops his first release via Throwing Snow‘s fresh imprint, Left_Blank. The Nylon Sunset EP is a four-track affair, boasting three forward-thinking jams and a remix of the title track by fellow Bristol basscase Peverelist. One of Vessel’s original tracks is the angular “Ton,” which we have for you here. The artist layers his finely crafted sounds with an ear that belies his short resume; a plethora of percussive elements skitter and fly from one ear to the other, synth and sample fragments work out sparse melodies, obscured field recordings fill in rhythmic gaps, and tastefully massive sub-bass tones swell underneath it all. We can only imagine what sounds the rest of Vessel’s record will hold when it drops on May 23.

Get a Fresh Mix From Canblaster

One of our favorite French DJ/producers working at the forefront of club music right now is young party starter Canblaster, who’s already delivered an outstanding podcast to XLR8R, and continues to wow us fresh releases, like his Clockworks EP for Nightshifters. Once again, the artist born Cédric Steffens has dropped a stellar mix of soundsystem gems, this time for Fool’s Gold‘s own podcast series. Foolcast 023 – Canblaster (pictured above) is a lengthy set of bass- and beat-centric music, with a tracklist comprised of the likes of Funkystepz, Todd Edwards, Nguzunguzu, Para One & Teki Latex, AraabMuzik, In Flagranti, Underworld, Lil Silva, and Canblaster himself, among many others. Com Truise “Cathode Girls”

With the release date of his debut LP, Galactic Melt, rapidly approaching, maverick producer Com Truise has leaked album cut “Cathode Girls” to whet our appetites. Maintaining consistency with his previous nostalgia-drenched output, “Cathode Girls” nevertheless reveals that, though Com Truise has a footing in the past, his aim is for the future. The track modulates between two distinct moods: the first, a noodly new-wave synthesizer jam; and the second, a laid-back and blunt-wrapped ode to ’80s electro-soul. The song begins as a disorganized mess of limp analog synthesizer stabs but then slowly congeals around a chorused-out bassline cribbed off Peter Hook. Then, switching modes, a gritty Zapp & Roger synth-bass drops in with a Linndrum rhythm that wouldn’t sound out of place being bumped from the trunk of a pimped-out ’88 LeSabre. Download “Cathode Girls” below and pick up Galactic Melt on July 5. (via FADER)
