Divine Interface “Folklore”

Atlanta-based Drew Briggs (a.k.a. Divine Interface) is getting set to release his first EP, Color Ways, on June 13. “Folklore” is one of the EP’s five offerings, and it’s a slow, bouncy, house tune driven by a haunting, reverberated vocal. The song twists and turns as the beat drops into half-time while the vocal delays pan and swirl, making room for the found-sound percussion to pull the song through. We’re hoping that the rest of this bass-fueled EP similarly showcases Briggs ability to manipulate samples, noise, and space.

Check Out the First Tracks From Gemmy’s New World of Wonders Label

Bristolian purple pusher Gemmel Phillips (a.k.a. Gemmy) has just announced the launch of his new imprint, W.O.W. (a.k.a. World of Wonders). With releases on Punch Drunk and Planet Mu, Phillips has garnered a reputation for creating floor-heavy tracks, so it’s likely that World of Wonders’ first release, Gemmy’s own (due out May 23 on vinyl, and digitally on May 30), will push bass cabs to their limits. Have a listen to “Jah Know” and “They Live Under the Stairs” below.

Circle Traps “Bo! Symbol (Subeena Remix)”

London-based Opit Records recently released a self-titled, five-track EP from London-based duo Jack Wyllie and Duncan Bellamy (a.k.a. Circle Traps). Included in the EP is a remix from label owner and one-time Bubblin’ artist Subeena (pictured above), who has cooked up her own version of the track “Bo! Symbol.” It’s a cavernous, techy rework laced with droning, metallic, washed-out percussion and fluttery horns that build into a soothing Rhodes-esque melody before dropping back into the dark atmosphere from which they began. Grab the remix below and check out the full release here.

Robert Hood to Release Live Version of ‘Omega’

Charlton Heston and techno: Two words that, until recently, would not have been associated with one another. Yet, nevertheless, minimal techno originator Robert Hood (who was featured on XLR8R‘s cover last year) managed to make the connection with last year’s stunning Omega—a musical transliteration of the post-apocalyptic 1971 thriller, The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston. Now, Hood returns with the imminent release of Omega: Alive, on his own M-Plant label, an album that captures the Omega live experience. Featuring raw and alternate versions of the album’s now classic cuts, Omega: Alive extends the story that Hood has created. The album won’t drop until June 20, but you can check out the tracklist and album art below.

Grimes “Fragments of the Future”

Our burgeoning love affair with Montreal’s Grimes continues to grow exponentially with this freshly unveiled, previously unheard track from the talented singer/producer. The shape-shifting dream-pop number premiered just yesterday as the opener of her mix for Altered Zones, which appropriately kicks things off with an ethereally ominous tone. Massive bass frequencies throb underneath airy harp plucks, shimmering piano melodies, and translucent vocal hooks on Grimes’ “Fragments of the Future”—creating an unlikely palette of sound that’s oddly infectious. Look for more of that kind of music on the artist’s split release with fellow Canadian pop experimentalist d’Eon, Darkbloom, which you can check out here.

Tobias Freund to Release Debut LP Under New Moniker

How can you get from Milli Vanilli to Drexciya? This is a question that techno producer Tobias Freund may be set to answer with the release of Leaning Over Backwards on Ostgut Ton, the debut LP from his new moniker, Tobias. With his label, Non Standard Productions, and working as a sound engineer for the past 20 years, Freund has had the opportunity to work and collaborate with artists as disparate as Milli Vanilli and Ellen Allien. Leaning Over Backwards takes advantage of his experience and long-cultivated technical know-how to forgo the ubiquitous computer-based sequencing in favor of classic drum machines and hardware synthesizers. The resulting album is a jammy, live-influenced exploration of underwater techno in the Drexciyan mold. Leaning Over Backwards doesn’t come out until July 4, but in the meantime you can check out the tracklisting and album art below.

01. Girts
02. Party Town
03. Voices Told Me To Do That
04. Skippy

07. Leaning Over Backwards
08. Observing The Hypocrites
09. The Key
10. She Still Calls Me Mister

Blithe Field “Crushing”

Following in the footsteps of electronic music composers primarily interested in the effects of precious, emotive sounds (i.e. Four Tet, Gold Panda, Styrofoam, et al) is 19-year-old tunesmith Spencer Radcliffe from Athens, Ohio, who’s been crafting that sort of music for some time under the name Blithe Field. His latest offering is an LP called Two Hearted (pictured above), the first track of which we have for you here. “Crushing” starts off with the sounds of barking puppies—running the risk of sounding entirely too cute, even for adolescent school girls—before quickly segueing into a tasteful groove of live drumming, tweaked acoustic guitar samples, bass melodies, and subtle electronics. More cutesy samples and poignant soundscapes appear before Blithe Field’s album opener is finished—leaving us oddly intrigued as to what other heart-on-sleeve tracks we’ll hear when Two Hearted is made available on June 28 via Lefse sister label Waaga.
