Listen to Gang Gang Dance’s New Album Now

Brooklyn-based psychedelic dance-rock experimentalists Gang Gang Dance will release their brand-new LP, Eye Contact, a week from today (May 10) via 4AD, but apparently couldn’t keep the music under wraps any longer, as they’ve offered the world a chance to stream the whole thing today. James Blake to Release Double A-Side Single, Tour This Summer

Podcast 196: Demdike Stare

Sample digging is a long-standing tradition in the world of electronic music, but few artists really have the chops to repurpose sounds quite like Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, collectively known as Demdike Stare. Last year, the UK duo released three LPs* full of dark, haunting sounds plucked from a variety of sources, including traditional Middle Eastern, Asian, and Eastern European music, not to mention bits of jazz, industrial, and who knows what else. Even without knowing all the ingredients, the group’s output has always been easy to appreciate, which is why we enlisted Canty and Whittaker to patch together a sonic collage for the XLR8R podcast series. As expected, the pair pilots an ominous, exotic musical journey and even better, has provided a tracklisting, making the task of unlocking the secrets behind Demdike Stare’s unique sonic brew just a bit easier.

01 Demdike Stare “Intro Loop”
02 Layale Bourg El Hamam “Belly Dance Nights” (EMI Lebanon)
03 Malcolm Clarke “The Unseeing Eye” (BBC)
04 Ray Tracing “Hold (Monster Music)” (Irdial)
05 Desmond Briscoe “Voices sequence taken from Listen, Move, and Dance Vol. 3” (Columbia)
06 Jackson Heights “Since I Last Saw You” (Charisma)
07 Anthony Manning “Islets in Pink Propylene” (Irdial)
08 Drug Free America “Candy Revisited” (Blind Eye)
09 Charlie Mariano “Traditional South Indian” (Freedom)
10 Move D “Tribute To Mr Fingers” (Source)
11 Autechre “P.I.O.B. Mix 2” (What’s That Noise?)
12 Iron Office “S/T” (Metronome)
13 Jurriaan Andriessen “Hardware Software” (Park)
14 Bobby Beausoleil “The Lucifer Rising Suite” (The Ajna Offensive)
15 Demdike Stare “Outro Loop”

*The three Demdike Stare LPs were reissued as a single release, Tryptych, earlier this year. Due to overwhelming demand, a very limited new vinyl pressing of all three albums was recently completed as well. All three can be purchased—only as a single set—here.

Teki Latex and Para One “5th Dimension”

Fun-loving Frenchmen Julien Pradeyrol (a.k.a Teki Latex, pictured above) and Jean-Baptiste de Laubier (a.k.a. Para One) dropped a new, two-track single, 5th Dimension, on Marble Music this week. To coincide with the release, the pair has offered up the record’s title track. A dizzying conglomeration of swirling synths and modulated vocals, the energetic “5th Dimension” strays from traditional electro rhythms with its off-kilter, syncopated drums. Cop the track below and be sure to grab the full release here.

Zoom R24 Recording Interface

Eye strain and carpal tunnel getting serious? Facebook addiction cutting deep holes into your productivity? Whatever your reason for wanting to get off the old computer box, the Zoom R24 recording interface (MRSP: $499) could very well be your ticket. For its price, the R24 sports a pretty impressive feature set. For starters, it offers 8-track simultaneous SD-card recording (up to 24-bit/48kHz) with maximum 24-track playback, and allows daisy-chaining of two units for up to 16 record tracks. It offers the requisite built-in effect suite, a 24-voice sampler, and a programmable, assignable drum machine complete with eight pads positioned in a row beneath the track sliders. In a nice gesture, Zoom also partnered with Big Fish Audio to provide 1.5 gigs of drum loops and samples. If you’re looking for an intuitive scratchpad or location-friendly multitrack recording device, the R24 should serve nicely. Another nice touch: You can disconnect the R24 from its brain and use it as a basic MIDI controller.

Rhythm Baboon “Hunting Bushman”

Released yesterday on Warsaw-based electronic music label Concrete Cut, the Jambah Bong Dub EP is a four-track offering from Polish DJ/producer Rhythm Baboon, who’s been exploring the more ominous and esoteric side of bass music for some years now. The artist born Szymon Listewnik has been compared to the likes of Shackleton and Demdike Stare, neither of which are a stretch; his deft use of percussion and ominous low-end tones place him square in that camp of dubby experimentalists. “Hunting Bushman” puts these strong points at the forefront of Rhythm Baboon’s production work, which—along with some ghostly sound effects and field recordings of cricket chirps—quite effectively create the suspenseful and mysterious mood of running through the jungle, whether you’re hunting or being hunted. You can sample more of these sounds from Listewnik’s new EP here.

Video Premiere: Matthewdavid “Noche y Dia / San Raphael”

When listening to the warbled, hiss-ridden tape music that comprises Matthewdavid‘s hazy debut LP for Brainfeeder, Outmind, certain words come to mind, like “journey” and “trip.” Not only because you get the feeling that the music itself is taking you somewhere as it wafts into your ears, but also because maybe the Southern California sound artist is taking his hometown’s beat music somewhere else, too. Similarly, this brand-new music video for Matthewdavid’s album cut “Noche y Dia / San Raphael” is a trip all of its own. Director Matt Amato uses pristine footage of a first-person view from a moving train to take you on his journey, which suddenly becomes more of a hallucinogenic trip. By the time the piece is over, we’ve arrived in another place altogether, and possibly in more ways than one.
