Deadbeat to Drop ‘Drawn & Quartered’ Via His New BLKRTZ Label

Berlin-based Canadian expat Scott Monteith (a.k.a. Deadbeat) has a couple of fresh endeavors in the works. The longstanding dub-techno producer has announced the formation of his own record label, BLKRTZ, which will drop its first release, a five-track album by Deadbeat called Drawn & Quartered, on June 20. The record is said to feature the artist “returning to his roots in the headiest and heaviest of dub business” across its five “extended” tracks, as well as “wrestling with the idea of time and its illusions in a myriad of ways.” Before Deadbeat’s Drawn & Quartered is available, you can check out its artwork and tracklist below.

SoCal beatsmith Groundislava has dropped this unsettling video for the track “Animal,” from his recently released self-titled debut LP. The stoney, melancholy head-nodder (which we posted for download a few weeks back) comes with a harrowing visual accompaniment thanks to the direction and production efforts of The Great Nordic Sword Fights. In the video, we follow a mysterious creature as it scurries frantically through a dark night in a bizarre Blair Witch Project-meets-Michel Gondry-meets-an-overwhelming-combination-of-hallucinogens kind of montage. Groundislava’s debut full-length is out now on Friends of Friends.

Moog Slim Phatty Analog Synthesizer

The Slim Phatty (MSRP: $849), presumably named for its keyboard-less, compact, two-voice design, and highly tweakable room-filling sonics, is the latest instrument to join Moog‘s pack of classic machines. Essentially, the Slim Phatty is the sound engine of a Little Phatty (the unit’s keyboard-equipped older brother), in a wedge-like module that is both rackmountable or tabletop. Classic wood side panels are available separately for that timeless, Giorgio Moroder-approved look. And like all of the newer Moog synths, the backlighting on the tactile buttons and bright LED markers for the dials are not only clear and useful, but darn rave-tastic with the studio lights down.

Like its older brother, the Slim Phatty includes a wealth of up-to-date features, including MIDI-over-USB with high-resolution messaging (you can easily record your movements as automation in your DAW and run that MIDI back through the unit, not only saving the performance but also making adjustments in the key editor for the perfect pass). Not forgetting its old-school origins, the Slim Phatty provides a 100% analog signal path and keeps the classic voltage-control method of speaking to other machines well intact. Using the CV feature, you can really go modular, hooking up all sorts of vintage and modern analog boxes to create your own BBC Radiophonic Workshop. And, as an added bonus, while most analog synths are not known for their mobility, this one is svelte enough to fit in your backpack, allowing the instrument to shine onstage as well.

While you can coax the sort of Moog-style squelch and punishing sub-sonics that will have you watching your bass bins (see the “O.L.” button to kick in an oomph of overload drive), a mere sweep of a filter and tweak of dial on this synth can conjure up an equally impactful bevy of cosmic, ambient, and Balearic delights. Another huge plus is the ability to send external audio through the Slim Phatty via a rear input for some wicked filtering, effectively giving you Mooger Fooger pedal-style processing in the same box. It all adds up to a cost-effective and highly recommended way of getting the legendary Moog sound into a studio of any size.

Andy Petr “Drinking Milk From His Hands”

The state of Wisconsin may not be the first place you think of when you hear that Dre Skull’s Mixpak label (responsible for releases from the likes of Warrior One, Lil’ Scrappy, and Vybz Cartel) has a new signing with an EP on the way, but that is precisely the place which the imprint’s newest signee, Andy Petr, calls home. The 19-year-old Milwaukee-based producer has offered up this track to help familiarize us with his productions, and if “Drinking Milk From His Hands” is any indication, they’re chock-full of bubbling synths and heavy beats. He’s even thrown in some frantically off-beat toms reminiscent of his Midwestern neighbors from Chicago’s juke scene to fill out this promising slice of futuristic electro. Although Petr’s got a forthcoming Mixpak EP, Rapper Turned Singer, in the works for a May 10 release, this particular track hails from the first volume of the young producer’s ambitious free EP trilogy, APD004, which you can download here.

White Mountains “Spectra”

With a handle that brings to mind the tranquility of being amongst protruding snow-capped land masses, its no surprise that this tune from producer Peter James (a.k.a. White Mountains) is a serene jaunt of blissful techno. “Spectra,” a cut from James’ forthcoming Lightforms EP (artwork above), gathers the usual elements of heavenly electronic music, utilizing light vocal “ahhs,” swelling pads, distant harp, and the sort of spiraling melodies one would expect—not that there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, despite employing some of the more common trademarks of the genre, “Spectra” still manages to have a unique place in the electro-bliss world, existing somewhere around The Field’s more repetitive melodic outings during his early Kompakt days but with more of a knack for vivid sonic textures in the vein of artists like Gold Panda. The Lightforms EP is James’ second offering under his White Mountains moniker, and will be released on June 7.

Finesse “Elevate”

Today, we’re unveiling the title track of the next 12″ scheduled to drop via The Miracles Club‘s Ecstasy imprint, a Chicago house-indebted number called “Elevate.” Finesse, the Portland-based duo behind this deep tune, showcases its love for cyclical basslines, simple 808 rhythms, chilly synth tones, and sporadic vocal flourishes, among other vintage sounds, throughout the production—never once breaking from the dance-music-revivalist character it plays so well. And if you’re ready for this pair to take you a little higher, check out more info on their record—which includes remixes from San Francisco producers Jason Kendig and C.L.A.W.S., along with b-side “Believe”—here, and the spooky interpretive-dance music video for Finesse’s “Elevate” after the jump.
