Ninja Tune to Release New Records From Daedelus and Dorian Concept

Ninja Tune is busy as ever with a slew of new releases planned for the coming months, including an LP from LA’s eccentric beatmaker, Daedelus (pictured above) and an EP from rising Viennese producer Dorian Concept. Bespoke, Daedelus’ first LP for the label since 2008’s Love to Make Music To, finds the producer employing the voices of a number of collaborators including Bilal, Baths, Inara George (of The Bird and The Bee), and Busdriver, among others. The new LP is also said to include more live instrumentation than most Daedelus efforts, with musicians like Amir Yaghami (a.k.a. Young Dad) contributing guitar for much of the record and Sa Ra’s Om’mas Keith contributing keys to the track “Suit Yourself.” Vienna-based musical prodigy Dorian Concept will see his Ninja Tune EP debut in the form of the four-tracker Her Tears Taste Like Pears. The young producer has seen his stock rise recently, making a name for himself with his unique mix of jazz, electronics, and, at times, club-friendly tendencies by playing with Flying Lotus’ live band and contributing a standout track to Ninja Tune’s 20th-anniversary box set last year. Daedelus’ Bespoke is set to be released April 11 in Europe and April 26 in the States, and Dorian Concept’s Her Tears Taste Like Pears will be available March 28. There’s no artwork for Daedelus’ LP yet, but you’ll find the full tracklist below, along with the artwork and tracklist for Dorian Concept’s forthcoming EP.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4

With Kontrol S4 (MSRP: $999, pictured above), Native Instruments has developed its most ambitious entry into the DJ game to date. Essentially a physical extension of NI’s Traktor software, the S4 integrates four-deck control with a four-channel digital mixer and audio interface. It’s bundled with its own unique version of Traktor Pro, designed specifically for the S4; essentially, this is an all-in-one DJ solution that takes much the same approach to hardware/software integration as NI’s Maschine, and shares many of its design sensibilities. While it lacks the tank-like metal construction of a high-end turntable or mixer, it’s a very well-crafted unit.

Where the S4 excels is in letting the user get endlessly creative with sampling, setting up cue points, and creating loops on the fly. Within 15 minutes, I was remixing tracks in real-time in a way that would be impossible with lesser hardware, and there’s an elegant consistency to the user interface that makes things as intuitive as possible. Recording, playing, and changing the size of samples, adding and manipulating FX, and juggling loops rarely requires you to look up at the computer, and the full hardware control (including independent knobs to control both the size and position of loops) allows for some amazing creative freedom.

Of course, all of this getting freaky requires your tracks to be beat-matched, and this is where digital solutions tend to fall short. Traktor has excellent beat-detection algorhythms, and when you’re matching two songs with distinct beats, it’s pretty smooth sailing: sync the incoming track, nudge it a bit with the jog-wheel to get them in line, and you’ve got a locked mix to go crazy with. When you need to manually beat match, the S4 lets you do so; the jog wheels have a nice weight and sensitivity, and scratch DJs can channel the wiki-wiki gods despite their small size. But these are not “active” platters, and if you’re used to mixing actual spinning records with plenty of torque, getting used to mixing with two inert jog wheels will definitely take some getting used to.

Ulysses “Acid Reflux (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)”

Eliot Taub (a.k.a. Ulysses, pictured above) has a long history as part of the NYC nightlife, becoming a prominent promoter in the late-’90s electro scene and more recently making music as one half of the NYC duo The Nuerotic Drum Band. His time spent in New York’s electro-days-of-yore seem to not have left him unaffected, as the title track from his latest solo EP, Acid Reflux, is completely drenched in acid-house throwback elements (tweaked 303 lines and the customary creepy voice saying something or other about acid), which Prins Thomas keeps relatively intact for this remix. The Norwegian producer manages to masterfully expand on Ulysses’ acid-synth ideas, turning the song into an almost ten-minute affair full of percussive layers, endless arpeggios, and some funky bass. After an almost four-minute intro, Thomas finally hits us with the beat, and an explosion of irresistibly tweaked and filtered 303 lines take over, riding the constantly-changing rhythmic elements below until they’re stripped back one by one as the song finally comes to a halt. The Acid Reflux EP, which features this remix, its original counterpart, and two more original tracks, is out now.

Butterz to Host Fabric’s Room Three, Releases Mini-Mixes From Terror Danjah and Elijah & Skilliam

Next Friday, London’s burgeoning grime label Butterz is set to host Fabric‘s Room 3 with sets from Terror Danjah, Swindle, Champion, Logan Sama, and label heads Elijah & Skilliam (pictured above). To help spread the word, both Elijah & Skilliam and Terror Danjah have made mini-mixes available over at Fabric’s site. Both mixes come in under 30 minutes but still manage to pack in rather impressive tracklists. Elijah & Skilliam’s features some Butterz exclusives, such as Royal T’s remix of S-X’s “Woo Riddim” and a collaboration from Trim and Starkey entitled “This Aint Me,” while Terror Danjah’s mini-mix is chock full of tracks from his own Harddrive imprint as well as a handful of his own productions. You can download the Elijah & Skilliam mix here, the Terror Danjah mix here, and get all the info on Butterz’s upcoming night at Fabric here.

Fixers “Iron Deer Dream (Chad Valley Remix)”

Oxford band Fixers recently hooked up with its neighbourhood tunesmith Chad Valley (pictured above), resulting in this starry-eyed remix of the indie-pop outfit’s “Iron Deer Dream” song. As he often does, producer Hugo Manuel cuts the vocal samples into candy-coated hooks that should keep listeners humming along while his thumping dance beats move your feet from side to side. The rest of “Iron Deer Dream (Chad Valley Remix)” is all glowing synthscapes, spacey percussion loops, bouncing basslines, and a couple of classic piano breakdowns that add a new level of sophistication to the artist’s repertoire. You can check out what the original version of Fixers’ number sounds like here, and pre-order a copy of that 7″ here.

Hessle Audio Co-Founder Pangaea to Release New Single

Hessle Audio co-founder (along with Ben UFO and Pearson Sound/Ramadanman) Kevin McAuley (a.k.a. Pangaea) has a new 12″ single slated for release later this month on his own label. The “Inna Daze” b/w “Won’t Hurt” single is said to find the veteran producer exploring “his own take on UK bass music.” Considering Hessle Audio has been on the cusp of forward-thinking house, dubstep, and UK bass music since its inception, we can only imagine that this single will further the imprint’s well-deserved reputation. Although we can’t share any audio from the forthcoming release, below you’ll find a stream of Pangaea’s track “Deviant,” from his 2007 single for Hessle, which will have to hold you over until “Inna Daze” b/w “Won’t Hurt” drops on February 28.

Chairman Kato “No Coincidence”

Chairman Kato is a new producer on the London bass music scene who recently joined the ranks of the Pictures Music crew—a roster that also includes the likes of Dark Sky and Seams—for his debut EP, Wildfire (pictured above). You can preview some portions of that forthcoming release here, but first we’ve got a full download of the second tune on Kato’s debut, “No Coincidence.” Of his music, the producer has said, “I knew I wanted to make something that was cohesive and not necessarily something that was going to move dancefloors,” a sentiment which rings particularly true on this cut. Kato’s song certainly has beats, but these are broken rhythms more closely associated with the Flying Lotus continuum than that of the UK club scene. And over those herky-jerky drum patterns, sheets of sizzling white noise compete with ghostly moans and rickety synth loops. It’s certainly no coincidence this production made it onto an EP called Wildfire; Chairman Kato makes it sound like you’re in the middle of one.

Joy Orbison Becomes Joy O, Preps New Single for Hotflush

Yesterday, we caught wind of Brooklyn duo Games changing up the name of their, uh, game, opting to call themselves by their respective last names instead, and today we discovered that buzz-producer Joy Orbison has simplified his own moniker, too. Under the name Joy O, DJ/producer Peter O’Grady has already got a new single coming down the pipeline through the label that broke his excellent “Hyph Mngo” tune, Hotflush. The 12″ will feature the tracks “Wade In” and “Jels,” and will be released on March 21. You can preview a radio rip of “Wade In” below. (via FACT)

Update: Apparently, O’Grady’s label, Doldrums, tweeted “Still O.R.B.I.S.O.N.” So, make of that what you will.

2562 Announces New Album

Back in January, we let you know that the Berlin-by-way-of-Holland producer 2562 had launched his own label, When In Doubt. Now, with its first release (a 10″ single from the label head himself) only a few days behind it, the imprint has announced it will release a new LP from 2562 in the form of a disco-inspired concept album entitled Fever. That’s right, the master manipulator of all things low-end has made this new record drawing inspiration from the underground disco music of the mid-’70s and early ’80s, going as far as to solely use sound sources that originated from disco records of the time to craft the songs for the record. However, according to his press release, the 11 tracks found on Fever in no way resemble their decades-old sound sources, even garnering a comment from low-end cohorts Martyn and Pinch, “Sorry, but I don’t hear that whole disco story in there. This simply sounds like you.” When you’re 2562, that’s probably a good thing. Fever will be released April 4. Check the artwork and tracklist below.

01. Winamp Melodrama
02. Cheater
03. Juxtaposed

05. Intermission

Marcus Intalex to Drop Debut Album Via Soul:R

More than two decades after the start of Marcus Intalex‘s music career, the drum & bass DJ/producer and Soul:R label owner will finally release his debut full-length album via his own imprint on April 18. The 12-song LP is called 21 (named after how many years Intalex has operated under that moniker), and features collaborations with the likes of Calibre, S.P.Y., Zed Bias, and more. On his forthcoming record, the artist says, “It’s influenced by everything I’ve been into for the [past] 21 years, everything I’ve believed in: techno, the earlier sounds of drum & bass, and experimental IDM. The balance in power shifted—not away from drum & bass, but almost away from commercial dance music.” Before 21 drops, Intalex put together a fresh mix for those anticipating his LP, called 21 Years Mix, which we’ve embedded for you, along with the artwork and tracklist for 21, below.

01 Make A Raise (feat. S.P.Y. and Ras Tweed)
