Blunted Robots, Floating Points, Scratcha DVA, Ricardo Villalobos, and More Help Take Over Fabric’s 11th Birthday

Another year means another birthday for everyone and everything, including London’s immense Fabric nightclub, and it has a big weekend planned for itself. The UK dance music hub rings in 11 years starting on October 15 with two massive parties sure to do the occasion justice. The first night, Friday, will feature the likes of DJs/producers Caspa, Marcus Nasty, Hatcha, Greenmoney, and many others spread throughout Fabric rooms One and Two, with Room Three dedicated entirely to the Blunted Robots crew and a couple of their pals, including Brackles, Shortstuff, Martin Kemp, Doc Daneeka, and Scratcha DVA. And then the big guns come out: From Saturday, October 16 at 11 p.m. until the following Monday at 5 a.m., Fabric will host a non-stop party with sets from Craig Richards, Ricardo Villalobos (pictured above), Damian Lazarus, Floating Points, Move D, dOP (performing live), and a whole load of other names yet to be announced. You can read up on the full info and look into buying tickets for any of the Fabric birthday events here.

Watch Big Freedia’s NSFW Strip Club Performance in Portland

On a recent tour stop at Musicfest NW in Portland, New Orleans’ bounce music “Queen Diva,” Big Freedia (who we’ve got an excellent interview with here), made a stop at local favorite strip joint Sassy’s. Thankfully, indie web-TV hub Into the Woods was there to capture the absolute madness. Big Freedia performs her “sissy” bounce crowd pleasers “Gin in My System,” “Rock Around the Clock,” and the all-too-appropriate “Ass Everywhere” (this video isn’t NSFW without reason). We’ve embedded the video for you, below, but you can check out more on the performance and download a handful of Big Freedia’s tracks here.

xxxy “Just for Me”

Are you tired of pitch-shifted vocals yet? Yeah, neither are we, which makes songs like “Just for Me” by Manchester’s xxxy even easier to enjoy. Taken from his recently released Every Step Forward EP, which you can purchase here, the song rolls along on a clap-heavy 2-step beat while crunchy synths fill out the aural experience. xxxy first caught our attention on Fabric’s Elevator Music compilation at the start of 2010; songs like this one, not to mention his recent FACT mix (which is sadly no longer available), show that the young producer is living up to his promise.

Five Star: Jammer

The Big Dada MC and Producer Tells Us About His Favorite New MCs

P. Money
Brand new and breaking bars in grime, P. Money came into the scene later on and was very consistent as part of the O.g’z. With his strong lyrical content, constant appearances on the radio, and regularly released records, he’s one of the most called/mentioned names in 2010.

Blacks
His energy on stage reminds me of myself. He worked with me for a long time, and put a lot of hard work into what he’s doing. He’s also been really persistent to get on the radio. He sold his mixtapes on the street, and worked hard overall alongside P. Money to establish the O.g’z.

Shorty
Shorty’s got a good, new range of flow and style. He doesn’t talk about violence—just talks about life, with a catchy, broken-down flow that’s easy to understand. He does the opening verse on the smash club track “Too Many Man” by Boy Better Know; this song is banging at the moment! Download Short Man Syndrome, his newest free mixtape right here.

Maxsta
I like Maxsta cos he reminds me of Kano around 2001. He’s really great with his lyrics, has a crazy high work rate, has knocked out a lot of tunes, and always works with various people. Great lyrics and delivery.

Jammin
He’s someone you need to look out for. Excellent lyrical content but he’s got a melodic flow, and produces as well. He’s consistent too, and makes a lot of music. He has a new album coming out on the Boxfresh site, he’s got a different style and he works hard to get his material out.

Jahmanji is out now on Ninja Tune

Duffstep “Over”

Before dropping his latest 12″ for the UK’s Saigon label on October 11, London-based DJ/producer Jeremy Duffy (a.k.a. Duffstep) sent over this unreleased track for us to share. “Over” is a shuffling dancefloor tune rife with loads of stabbing synth melodies, big filter washes, impenetrable atmosphere, and whole lot of the UK club scene’s silky soul. The upbeat song’s melodies may weigh in a bit heavy on the trance-y side of things, but Duffstep’s production balances those hypnotic vibes with his buoyant, bubbling bassline and a certain subtlety and panache to his sound wrangling that eliminates the possibility of any regrettable trance-related cliches. Trancestep, anyone?

Sistol “On the Bright Side (The Brighter Side Scuba Remix)”

A man of many monikers, Sasu Ripatti (a.k.a. Luomo a.k.a. Vladislav Delay a.k.a. Sistol a.k.a. Yung Patti a.k.a. Sasu F. Baby) is following up his latest release under the name Sistol, On the Bright Side (out now), with a large number of remixes and reworks of the album’s glitchy, techno-leaning tunes. Hotflush label head and DJ/producer Paul Rose (a.k.a. Scuba, pictured above) took Ripatti’s production and reformatted it to fit the dubby, ethereal, post-genre soundscapes he is wont to create. And whaddaya know—it’s great. Soulful vocal melody blips, tantalizing vinyl crackles, filtered synths, smashing kicks, popping snares, and a strong undercurrent of bass all power Scuba’s remix as it slowly builds from its disparate elements into an energetic whole ready to take over your favorite soundsystem’s subwoofers. Scuba shares disc space on Sistol’s handful of remix collections with FaltyDL, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Redshape, among others, which are also out now on Halo Cyan/Phthalo.

The Bug to Release New Double 12″ this November

Serving as the link between his last album for Ninja Tune, 2008’s London Zoo, and a new record of “dub battles” in the works, UK producer The Bug will drop a brand-new EP on November 15, also through Ninja Tune. The four-song, double-12″ release will feature a reworking of Zoo number “Skeng” that trades the original’s gritty vocals with something a bit easier on the ears from King Midas Sound’s Hitomi, and a new version of “Poison Dart” with a vocal contribution from Roots Manuva. On the EP’s second half, Autechre will provide its own remix of “Skeng” and “Poison Dart” gets a new treatment from UK funky DJ/producer (and recent XLR8Rpodcast contributor) Scratcha DVA. You can check out the full artwork and tracklist below, and stream snippets of the whole release on The Bug’s Myspace page. (via FACT)

1. Catch A Fire feat. Hitomi
2. Tune In feat. Roots Manuva
3. Skeng (Autechre Remix)
4. Poison Dart (Scratcha DVA Remix)

Dave Nada “Drop Buddy Gal”

When writing about music, we often use the word “bounce” or “bouncing” to help describe the plethora of dance beats that make their way through the XLR8R office’s many sets of ears. But were you to look up those words in some sort of online dictionary where music provided definitions, this rework of Sticky and Natalie Storm’s “Look Pon Me” tune by el padre del moombahton, Dave Nada, would be there, waiting for you to hit the play button. Nada’s thick groove is infectious to start, but once those vocals drop into the mix, things are taken to a whole new level of bounce; drop this track in your next DJ set and there won’t be a still body in the room. Taking a break from producing the upcoming Nadastrom album with frequent partner in crime, Matt Nordstrom, the duo has embraced slower tempos and put together a new collection of moombahton remixes, edits, and reworks, calling it the Rum & Coke EP. Those six tracks are available now for free download, here.
