Download a New Mix and Interview From Actress with Gilles Peterson

Werk Discs label head and recent XLR8R feature Darren Cunningham (a.k.a. Actress) was snagged a few days ago for a little bit of podcast mix magic and interview face time with BBC Radio1 personality Gilles Peterson. The somewhat soft-spoken producer talks with the host about his musical past, his highly touted debut album, Splazsh, and what’s coming up on Actress’ horizon, all among some choice tracks of Cunningham’s own and his personal favorites. You can stream and download the whole podcast over on Peterson’s website, here.

J. Dilla “Sycamore”

Back in May, the folks at Stones Throw dropped another posthumous release from the late, great J. Dilla, an EP that features—along with the actual music—two Serato control records and two donut slipmats. Three of Donut Shop‘s six tracks are instrumentals of tunes lifted from recent releases, and the other three—including this tune, “Sycamore”—are unreleased productions hand-selected by J.Rocc from Dilla’s archives. Not much can be said about a Dilla beat that isn’t hip-hop common knowledge, even with a fresh track. The dirty shuffle of the producer’s drum-machine rhythms and thick bass-synth funk are paired with a bit of MPC noodling for another gritty classic. And as per usual with the legend’s work, “Sycamore” doesn’t need the help of an MC to keep things interesting through its two and a half minutes.

Podcast 154: SWTBRDS

2010 hasn’t exactly been a banner year for hip-hop, but one crew we have been consistently impressed with, SWTBRDS, happens to reside right here in our Bay Area backyard. Home to acts like DaVinci, StreetMedia, and Adrian Champion, the label’s catalog to date is only three albums deep—all of which are available for free download via the SWTBRDS’s Bandcamp—but the young imprint has quickly shown that Bay Area hip-hop has a lot more to offer than cartoonish hyphy rap. This podcast, entitled SWTBRDS Mix #1, features 95% SWTBRDS material and was put together by label affiliate Ammbush, a member of the famed Oakland Faders and the Drums & Ammo beat click, whose membership also includes producers Al Jieh, REL, & 6fingers, all of whom contribute their beatmaking talents to these tracks. Blasting through 22 songs in 38 minutes, Ammbush showcases the label’s wealth of talent, and has us hoping that SWTBRDS Mix #2 will be right around the corner.

Oriol Night and Day

There’s a special rush one gets driving down the freeway en route to a club or concert on a Saturday night. White and red brake lights blink and glow in traffic, wind rushes by, and fluorescently lit buildings create a halo above the city. You arrive at the spot energized and ready to plunge into music. Oriol Singhji’s debut for Planet Mu, Night and Day, takes you on that journey from twilight through sunrise on an album well suited for automobile excursions. The Barcelona-born, London-based artist places analog and digital keyboards front and center in his music, and uses them with both restraint and freedom. Singhji’s balance of melodic chords and astute improvisation is crucial to Night and Day‘s success.

The cool arpeggios on opener “Flux” are anchored by mid-tempo, funky machine rhythms that recall Kirk Degiorgio’s 1997 masterpiece, Planetary Folklore. In fact, the post-trip-hop and pre-broken-beat era from 1996-1999 is a good reference point for this album. During that time British and European artists like Degiorgio, Ian O’Brien, and Gerd were exploring electro-jazz fusion territory while Claude Young, Kenny Larkin, and Anthony “Shake” Shakir were merging Detroit’s melodic techno with soulful elements. You hear echoes on Singhji’s “Memories” and “Jam,” which feature superb pitch-wheel lead key solos. “Coconut Coast” and “5 Bars” nod respectfully to ’80s electro-soul outfits Kleer or Con-Funk-Shun, but share more in common with contemporary synth stylers Dam-Funk and FaltyDL. The 11 tracks on Night and Day are all excellently arranged and consistently pleasing. It’s 24 hours you won’t soon forget.

Teengirl Fantasy “Cheaters”

The Oberlin-based collegiate pair in Teengirl Fantasy have been bubblin’ on the XLR8R radar for about a year now (remember this song?), and with good merit. Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss spent a good amount of time pilfering the sounds and ideas of classic house and techno before bringing them all together in their old-school-referencing dance jams, and the duo’s forthcoming debut for True Panther, 7AM, is the proper culmination of Teengirl Fantasy’s hotly tipped efforts. “Cheaters” is the first track to be shared from the album, and it’s a poignant number built of a thumping house beat, some warbling synth pads, a slow-driving bassline, and one hell of a soulful vocal track that serves as the focal point of Teengirl Fantasy’s awesome tune while also sounding totally unhinged from it.

7AM will be released September 14.

Avey Tare Readies October Release of New Solo Album

Not unlike his oft-lauded bandmate Panda Bear, Animal Collective frontmammal Dave Portner (a.k.a. Avey Tare) will soon be releasing his first solo album, entitled Down There. The nine-track debut comes out October 26 on Paw Tracks, and was recorded throughout this past June in upstate New York with the help of fellow Collective member Deakin. Down There is purported to be “a murky world of sound, an alien death world of soul grooves that is both honest and otherworldly”. In other words, this may not be the weird pop experimentalism you would expect from a member of one of indie music’s biggest bands. Check out the artwork and tracklist for Avey Tare’s upcoming album below.

1. Laughing Hieroglyphic
2. 3 Umbrellas
3. Oliver Twist
4. Glass Bottom Boat
5. Ghost of Books
6. Cemeteries
7. Heads Hammock
8. Heather in the Hospital
9. Lucky 1

The Aikiu “Just Can’t Sleep (Egyptrixx Remix)”

French disco-centric live act The Aikiu—which boasts Cedric Pilooski, the DJ/producer partially behind the Dirty label and one of our more recent podcasts, as one third of its ranks—just released its debut single, “Just Can’t Sleep,” along with remixes from Azari & III, Clement Meyer, and here, Egyptrixx. For his treatment of the song, the Canadian producer exchanged the live instrumentation for some rubbery percussion, bouncing bass synths, and an all-around more sinister aesthetic than The Aikiu’s original tune. Now that we think about it, Egyptrixx ditched everything but snippets of the vocal from “Just Can’t Sleep,” which worked out wonderfully, thanks to the excellent future-house production he meshed them with.

Mille Plateaux’s Back Catalog Illegally Sold Online

DJ, producer, and Comatonse label owner Terre Thaemlitz (a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles, pictured above) recently brought to light an important and unexpected issue involving the online sale of music through major storefronts like iTunes, Beatport, and Juno. Apparently, Thaemlitz came upon the back catalog of his old label, Mille Plateaux, which includes large amounts of his and other producers’ music, being sold on Beatport. This prompted the award-winning artist to pen an open letter to the press on July 31, saying in part, “…none of the original Mille Plateaux catalog is authorized for digital distribution, all contracts have since expired, and exclusive rights have returned to the original artists long ago. This includes both solo albums and compilation tracks. (The only legitimate Mille Plateaux downloads would be very recent projects released under the Mille Plateaux label name since it has been owned by Marcus Gabler [c .2008-present], which have nothing to do with the original Mille Plateaux catalog and are only related in label name). No matter how well reputed the stores selling the music may be, listeners should be aware that all such content is unauthorized, and we artists do not receive any money from their sale. The consumers’ money is going to crooks – usually industry-related – who illegally and deliberately upload the materials solely for profit.” Since writing the letter, Beatport has expressed that they are taking the matter seriously and investigating the origins of the illegal music, and online music distributor IODA (who was suspect as the provider of the illicit materials) has shown proof that the music did not come from them. To read Thaemlitz’s entire letter and keep up on the developing story, head here.

Nite Jewel “Am I Real?”

The title track from the recently released Nite Jewel EP, Am I Real?, is a bit of a new direction for the LA-based outfit. Lead Jewel Ramona Gonzales has taken a slightly different approach to her singing, adding an extra bit of structure and deeper soul to her oft-lilting vocal melodies, and the music itself is some kind of fractured funk—complete with slap-n-pop basslines—paired with a sparsely orchestrated ’80s ballad. We like it—a lot—and hopefully we can expect more of this from the other five songs on Nite Jewel’s new EP, which is available here.
