Mary Anne Hobbs Resigns from BBC

The venerated radio host and DJ Mary Anne Hobbs announced yesterday that she’s leaving the BBC after 14 years to pursue other work. Her final BBC show will happen September 8. Hobbs made the announcement on her MySpace page.

Yesterday I resigned from BBC Radio1, after an amazing multi-dimensional 14-year career.

The great freedoms the BBC have given in me as a broadcaster, have allowed me to help break so many confrontational artists as diverse as Slipknot and Skream, and of course, the whole genre of Dubstep in recent times. My current Experimental show is in peak condition, it’s never been stronger. And although it’s a very emotional decision to leave the show that I love so much, it’s also an optimum moment to bow out, at the very top of my game. My work for Radio1 on the Breezeblock, Rock Show, many fascinating documentaries about everything from David Bowie to Dubstep, on daytime, at festivals and award ceremonies, has been exceptionally rewarding. These have been glory days not just for me, but for all the artists who have shared my BBC platform, and of course, the listeners everywhere from Beijing to Berlin, Baltimore to Blackpool, who shared a great passion for future sound. I will continue to DJ live, work in film, and curate at Sonar festival in Barcelona. I have also accepted a new job mentoring and teaching students at the University of Sheffield’s Union Of Students radio station, TV station and the newspaper that operate out of their superb Forge Media Hub, which presents me with a really exciting new challenge. My last show on BBC Radio1 will be broadcast:
September 8th>>9th … Wednesday night >> Thursday morning… 2-4am

P.U.D.G.E. “Insensitivity”

NY-native-turned-LA-resident P.U.D.G.E. will release his debut full-length next week on Ramp, but before that, we’ve got an exclusive preview of one of Idiot Box‘s slow-grooving jams. “Insensitivity” is a synth-addled MPC jam with a swagger not unlike that of beatmaking greats Madlib and J.Dilla. Like Madlib, P.U.D.G.E. fills in the gaps of his rhythms with wonky noise and random textures, and like the late Dilla, he uses thick, soulful basslines, head-knocking kicks, and massive claps to make up the meat of his track. P.U.D.G.E. still has a ways to go before gaining the same notoriety of his sample-rocking forefathers, but if “Insensitivity” is any indication, he’s off to a great start.

Abe Duque “Bumble Bee (feat. Virginia)”

This brand-new slow-burner comes courtesy of NY DJ/producer/label-head extraordinaire, Abe Duque. The techno/house/acid fiend has a double-disc mix album coming in September, Live and On Acid, which includes three fresh tracks from the veteran music maker. One such tune, “Bumble Bee” is a massive dancefloor heater that boasts a bulbous, hypnotic groove, some acid-y synth squelches, and an indecipherably haunting vocal presence from vocalist Virginia. The entrancing number can be heard mixed into the Live portion of Duque’s forthcoming release, but will also be released as the first 12″ on his Abuse Industries imprint in a couple of months.

Snag a New Tiga Remix by Motor City Drum Ensemble

New York-based music download hub RCRD LBL got its hands all over one of the three remix EPs Tiga has been releasing after last year’s Ciao! album. From the Overtime Remixes EP, a treatment of “Overtime” by Germany’s Motor City Drum Ensemble was just offered as a free download on the website. We’ve embedded the player below, and you can also stream the whole release, as well as Tiga’s Gentle Giant Remixes EP and a ton of other sexed-up electro goodies from the Canadian producer, here.

Skream Gives Away More Tunes on ‘Freeizm Vol. 3’

Before his sophomore album, Outside the Box, is released August 9, dubstep mainstay Skream is giving away handfuls of free tracks, announcing the downloads via his Twitter page. He’s already hooked up two batches of tunes, and just announced the lastest installment, Freeizm Vol. 3. You can guiltlessly download those songs here.

Shigeto “What We Held On To”

From his freshly released second EP, Shigeto‘s “What We Held On To” is another intricately produced piece of melodic beat music. The track is full of micro-samples, wafting atmosphere, and crunchy textures—all wrapped around the Michigan-based tunesmith’s slap-heavy beats and plinking synth melodies. It’s another reminder of how preciously constructed Shigeto’s music is, and how, no matter how many moods he flips within one track, each one is treated with delicate care and painstaking attention to detail. You can snag this track, along with the entire new EP, for absolutely free from Ghostly, here. Full Circle, Shigeto’s first full-length album, will see the light of day later this year.

Watch DaVinci’s New “Concrete Jungle Juice” Video

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=13538404&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=1&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="530" height="298">".

Here’s another piece of pristine footage matched with one of DaVinci‘s conscious hip-hop tunes. Shot and directed by Marcus Ubungen, the video for “Concrete Jungle Juice,” from his recent The Day the Turf Stood Still debut, is as smoothly hyped and tastefully flashy as the track itself. A series of various close-ups of DaVinci delivering his raspy flow are intertwined with quick shots of blunt smoking, jungle-juice mixing, and simply animated verbiage. It’s got a slight bit of a stripped-down Tarantino vibe to it, and Ubungen’s wonderful-looking footage and well-balanced editing allow Ammbush’s nod-worthy production to be the primary focus, as it should be.

Jamie Stewart and Jonathan Meiburg Reveal New Blue Water White Death Project

Two masterminds of our era’s most eccentric, forward-thinking indie groups, Xiu Xiu and Shearwater, have come together on a new project of unprecedentedly strange pop music. Jamie Stewart (pictured above) and Jonathan Meiburg are Blue Water White Death, “a pair of reclusive eccentrics making music in a derelict mansion, perilously balancing beauty and horror with the absurd,” (says their press info). The duo’s debut self-titled album was written and recorded in a week (!) with producer John Congleton, who has worked in the past with Modest Mouse, St. Vincent, and Black Mountain, and features such wonderful song titles as “The End of Sex” and “Song for the Greater Jihad.” Blue Water White Death will be released October 12 via Graveface. Preview Kingdom’s New EP on Night Slugs

Hot on the heels of its latest record from label head L-Vis 1990, London’s Night Slugs is dropping That Mystic, a new EP from NYC’s Kingdom. The five-song release showcases Kingdom’s love for pulsing house grooves punctuated by off-kilter percussion and plenty of chopped and/or pitch-shifted R&B vocal snippets. It’s heady dance music, to be sure, but it’s also well suited for folks who excitedly track the latest jams on BET’s 106 & Park. The EP comes out next week, but you can listen to the first three tracks here on XLR8R.com.

The XLR8R Music Player requires Adobe Flash Player version 9 or later. Click here to install.
