Video: Beach House “Zebra”

It’s not often that XLR8R gets behind a moody, melodic pop band like Beach House, but songs like “Zebra” are just plain undeniable. The song’s new video offers up a brief psychedelic journey where everything is viewed through some sort of washed-out kaleidoscope. It’s not quite as spectacular as the music itself, but honestly, we’ll take any chance we can get to listen to “Zebra” a few more times.

Casiokids “En Vill Hest (Prins Thomas Remix)”

As his productions often do, Prins Thomas‘ remix of “En Vill Hest” by Norwegian indie-pop quintet Casiokids takes its sweet, sweet time to really get cooking. After spending nearly half of the song’s run time layering percussion upon bass licks upon low-register chants upon guitar strums upon synth flourishes upon more drum sounds, a smooth falsetto vocal is introduced to the mix, and moves the track from slow-burning Balearic disco to upbeat beachfront pop. In the hands of someone other than Prins Thomas, a nine-minute exploration of hypnotic live instrument grooves could be a drab listen, but somehow Thomas manages to make his remix coast by without us having to glance at our watch.

Midnight Juggernauts to Release New Album, Tour US

Following the 2007 release of their debut full-length Dystopia, Australian synth-rock trio Midnight Juggernauts are set to return with their sophomore release, The Crystal Axis. The follow-up record is said to follow a path previously untraveled by the band: one littered with elements of psychedelia, Italo, prog, Krautrock, and free-form jams all re-focused to fit a solid pop format. Siberia Records, the Juggernauts’ own label, will release The Crystal Axis May 28, with a European and US tour to follow soon after, but you can stream the whole album on the band’s MySpace page now. Check out the video for Axis cut “Vital Signs,” and the some choice tour dates below.

Listen to ‘Chocolate,’ the New Album from Tiefschwarz

It’s been five years since fun-loving German house/techno duo Tiefschwarz released a proper artist album, so it’s fair to say that there’s some palatable anticipation surrounding the release of Chocolate, the third full-length from brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz. The boys have been kind enough to let XLR8R provide an exclusive preview of the record, which comes out May 28 on Tiefschwarz’s own Souvenir label, although the songs are already available for digital purchase here. Give it a listen and check out the album artwork below.

The XLR8R Music Player requires Adobe Flash Player version 9 or later. Click here to install.

Light Asylum “A Certain Person”

People like to throw around the “’80s” tag all willy-nilly when talking or writing about more electronically based pop acts (M83 and The Juan MacLean come immediately to mind), but here’s one that truly sounds as if it had been born of and imported from that neon era. Brooklyn’s Light Asylum is the duo of singer Shannon Funchess and producer Bruno Coviello, who together write desolate pop songs that simultaneously evoke Kate Bush, Grace Jones, and the early days of New Order. This demo of the song “A Certain Person” showcases Funchess’ low-register voice subdued beneath an array of vintage synth tones, classic drum-machine sounds, and an oddly fitting sample of a braying horse—making the moments when she breaks through the mix especially ear-catching. Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Matthew Dear, and More Talk Detroit Electronic Music Festival History on Resident Advisor

For 10 years, Detroit, the birthplace and home of countless amounts of electronic music, has hosted an annual festival every Memorial Day weekend, which has showcased some of the best in the all-encompassing genre’s wide array of producers and DJs. Resident Advisor sought out the large number of artists, promoters, journalists, and city officials involved with the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, including the likes of Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig, Anthony Shakir, Matthew Dear, Juan Atkins, DJ 3000, and many, many others, to talk about their experiences through the years of the festival, and why DEMF is important to them and the whole of the electronic music world. It’s an epic piece detailing important moments in music history, and we strongly recommend digging into it, here.

Oneohtrix Point Never “Pelham Island Road”

One may think that making spatially amorphous, rhythmless washes of soupy synth tones and blurry aural textures would be relatively easy, and they’d be right. However, making those same sounds interesting proves a task few are capable of. Alongside the likes of Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, and Mike Oldfield stands Oneohtrix Point Never: Brooklyn’s Daniel Lopatin manning the station of formless electronic music (whom XLR8Rfeatured in its pages not long ago). This slice of interstellar sonics is taken from his latest release, Returnal, and is as equally indescribable as the Lopatin’s confounding moniker. “Pelham Island Road” starts off with what sounds like the tail end of another instrumental suite heavy with Juno-60 patches, and cuts off abruptly on its way to another floating point somewhere further into Lopatin’s psyche.
