James Brown “Get Up Offa That Thing (Bangana Remix)”

Bangana‘s Alf Tumble and Combo originally intended this remix of the Godfather of Soul to appear on a tribute compilation, but decided that releasing a bootleg version of it was an infinitely better idea. Good news for us, since the Swedish duo craft a disco-funk mix of “Get Up Offa That Thing” that not only does justice to JB’s original, but also grooves hard enough to recall a totally sweet Major Swellings or Idjut Boys track. In fact, the vocal samples are so carefully chosen and bass is so bouncy and clean that one can easily imagine DJ Harvey rocking this joint towards the apex of the night, a compliment bestowed upon only the best edits.

Toro Y Moi “Leave Everywhere”

Somewhere along the way of touring the world in support of his debut full-length, Causers of This, young music maker Chaz Bundick dropped the highly synthesized sounds that initially defined his Toro Y Moi project for something a bit more live and organic. On his new single, Bundick belts out some lyrics about heading home from what sounds like the middle of a barren tunnel, as simple guitar strums and drum beats fill the space around him. “Leave Everywhere” is a completely new sound for Toro Y Moi, and may simultaneously win and lose Bundick a handful of fans amidst the transformation. Check Out a New Roska Mix for Sonar Festival

UK funky champion and XLR8R person of interest Roska (Roska, Roska…) hooked up the world with a brand-new mix to stoke everyone on his upcoming appearance at this year’s Sonar festival. The rising music star was handpicked by Mary Anne Hobbs as the sole representative of UK funky on her stage at the music fest, which also includes future-dubstep and beat music icons Joy Orbison and Flying Lotus. His hour-long affair features many of bass music’s usual suspects, including Martyn, Deadboy, Geeneus, Brackles, and Crazy Cousinz, along with a few remixes and originals from the DJ/producer’s own repertoire—all mixed with the expected precision and energy of a Rinse acolyte. Stream the Latest Track From Shlohmo’s Forthcoming EP

Since the release of Shlomoshun Deluxe early this year, SF/LA music maker Shlohmo has been on the tip of every herky-jerky beat-lover’s tongue, and we’ll admit we’ve also been keeping our ear perked for what’s coming next from the young producer. As it turns out, his next salvo is going to be the Camping EP, slated for release on the Friends of Friends label, who have passed along a taste of the seven-track affair with the new jam “Birthday Beat.” Henry Laufer’s new tune follows in suit with his previous work, furthering the ever-growing, oft-changing beat scene, but takes things in a new direction with the employment of a soulful synth melody that could’ve easily been lifted from a number of classic ’90s R&B tunes. Check out the song, along with the Camping EP’s artwork and tracklist, before it’s released on June 15, and before Shlohmo hits the road with Strangeloop and Teebs for a string of dates, which are all listed below.

Nguzunguzu “El Bebe Ambiente (Them Jeans Remix)”

Dim Mak resident DJ/producer Them Jeans pilfered the first few seconds from fellow LA residents Nguzunguzu‘s “El Bebe Ambiente”—taken from the duo’s free self-titled EP—to use as the basis for this booming bootleg remix. It sounds like he only managed to grab the high-pitched vocal rhythm and maybe a few percussion sounds from the original track, but the rest of the sounds in Jason Stewart’s remix—filtered synths, bouncing kicks and snares, and a ’90s rave-inspired melody—could’ve just as easily come from Nguzunguzu’s repertoire. You can go ahead and add this to the other list of awesome Nguzunguzu-related things going down, like their upcoming M.I.A. mixtape—comissioned by Ms. Arulpragasam herself—and their show this Saturday at San Francisco bass party Icee Hot.

Out now on Palms Out Sounds, Marcus Price and Carli’s “Mat Bira Kvinnor Weed” is a bumping slice of tongue-in-cheek booty-bass with an even more tongue-in-cheek video, featuring the duo and an unnamed Swedish woman preparing food and dueling with utensils. Check it out above, and while you’re at it, check out last summer’s write-up of Kingdom’s remix of the piece.

Catch James Blake on Gilles Peterson’s Show

Fresh-faced Hemlock compatriot and exciting bass music producer James Blake was invited to Gilles Peterson’s Radio 1 show last night to introduce listeners to some new and unreleased chunes from his forthcoming CMYK EP for R&S. The radio-show host chatted up the UK beatsmith about his skillful piano playing, performing live with Mount Kimbie, and his own production techniques, before premiering Blake’s exclusive mix for the show. Strangely enough, the DJ set includes music from Joanna Newsom and Otis Redding alongside more expected bits of forward-thinking dance music. Stream the broadcast here, and note that James Blake’s performance doesn’t get started until about 30 minutes into the two-hour show. (via Fader)
