Baths “Maximalist”

If Toro Y Moi had the chops of Matmos and the beat savoir-faire of FlyLo, it might sound something like “Maximalist.” Though he hails from the Valley, the LA-area solo producer known as Baths has a forthcoming full-length on Anticon, and the woozy Dilla-like beats and gauzy samples of this piece show that he certainly deserves our attention. Though it is tempting to place Baths within the same realm as glo-fi or chillwave or whatever funny name it has this week, there is certainly more funk and texture to “Maximalist” than the more hazy, sunny works of his peers.

Grab Luke Vibert’s Free Old-School UK Rap Mix

Electronic music’s jack-of-all-trades Luke Vibert just dropped a free mix taking us all back to the roots of old-school, hardcore UK rap music. The hour-plus DJ set focuses on choice jams from the British rap scene from 1988 to 1992, but good luck deciphering who’s who in Vibert’s mix. In fact, as an added bonus, fans can try to arrange the mixed-up tracklist into its correct order—and win a special prize from Planet Mu if they figure it out. Check out the vintage tunes and contest info on the Planet Mu blog here.

Sekta feat. Spoek Mathambo “Peterpan (Doc Daneeka Remix)”

UK bass fanatic Doc Daneeka rounds out this recently released remix EP for Sekta & Spoek Mathambo’s “Peterpan,” along with Julio Bashmore, Sharkslayer, and recent XLR8Rpodcast contributor Dubbel Dutch. Doc Daneeka treats Spoek’s hyper-sexual vocal workout to one of his bouncing future-riddims—complete with stuttering snare rolls, massive bass drops, and elastic synth sounds all working in tandem to move your hind parts.

News Reports from Todd P’s MTYMX Festival in Monterrey, Mexico

Last week we featured an interview with NYC show promoter Todd P prior to his inaugural MTYMX Festival in Monterrey, Mexico. While XLR8R wasn’t able to attend, we were obviously curious about how it all went down. Here’s a wrap-up from a few different sources.

NY Times “Rocking and Roughing It at a Festival in Mexico”

Impose Magazine “Pussies, jugs of mezcal, and death threats”

Current’s Comedy Blog “MtyMx was fun”

The Village Voice “Todd P’s MtyMx Mexican Standoff”

Mantler “Fresh and Fair”

A shuffle of distorted, percussive noise starts off this smooth diddy from Toronto’s subtle and smooth crooner Chris Cummings (a.k.a. Mantler). While the singer-songwriter waxes poetic on the pitfalls of love, Jeremy Greenspan (of Junior Boys) provides some slow-grooving beats to serve as the soulful backdrop of “Fresh and Fair.” All in all, the song comes off sounding like it could be an actual Junior Boys number, but with Cummings’ forlorn baritone traded out for Greenspan’s usual falsetto.

MyKill “Flashback”

It takes two minutes for MyKill‘s “Flashback” to really get moving, but move it does. Funky guitar and piano samples slowly filter into the mix, and hold on tight to the propulsive disco-house beat. The San Francisco DJ/producer fades back and forth between a couple different classic disco samples throughout his clubby track for the Solid Bump compilation Pleasure & Pressure Vol. 2—maintaining a vibe not unlike Mylo’s more energetic moments, all the while.

Danton Eeprom Yes Is More

Working in the oft-arid realms of minimal techno and microhouse, French producer Danton Eeprom imbues them with a sly sensuality that coaxes maximum wigglyness from a sparse sound palette. For his debut album, Eeprom threads male and female vocals (his own and Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster) into a varied sonic tapestry without abandoning the genres with which he’s established his lofty rep. He’s also brought a brighter and more colorful approach to his tracks, as beat-wise opener “Thanks for Nothing” makes clear. The deep downtempo funk of “Give Me Pain” and the quiet-storm R&B of “Desire No More” attempt to capture Prince’s seductive powers, but epic minimal-techno rollers “Tight” and “Confessions of an English Opium-Eater” remain Eeprom’s forte.
