Jinder “Youth Blood (Boboes Kaelstigen Remix)”

It seems the world’s current vampire craze hasn’t limited itself to film and television. Swedish electro-pop songstress Josefine Jinder has used the iconography to make the backdrop of “Youth Blood,” her ode to late-nightstalkers on the prowl for a good time. From the single’s second remix EP, entitled Youth Blood Scandinavian Remixes, tech-house duo Boboes Kaelstigen give the track a filtered gloss-over suitable for ending the night’s adventures. The release is out now on Trouble & Bass, who have also offered up a special promo mix from resident DJ The Captain.

Cobra Killer Uppers and Downers

Still dolled up like fetishized East Berlin schoolmarms, Gina D’Orio and Annika Trost have kept up their art-damaged moxie, for better and worse. Uppers and Downers finds the pair unleashing more go-go swing, electroclash sleaze, and enough cryptic lyrics to puzzle feminist dissections for ages—on “Hello Celebrity” the girls catcall wonton-eating stars. Indie guitar icons Thurston Moore and J. Mascis show up on “Hang Up the Pinup” to flesh out a scuzzy metal jam while the ladies randomly hack up their vocals. The wackiness grows uninspired as the album proceeds, particularly on “Mr. Chang,” when the ladies sing as airport luggage attendants. Just like the title, this album is all blissful highs and sudden lows, but offers very little to remember the morning after.

Anthony “Shake” Shakir to Release First Full-Length

Though he has worked stages and studios for nearly 30 years alongside veterans like Carl Craig, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins, Anthony “Shake” Shakir has only produced one-off compilation tracks, EPs, and 12″ releases in the past. With the forthcoming release of Frictionalism 1994-2009, the seminal Detroit-based techno producer will soon have an official full-length album under his belt. This “extensively researched” set of music spans 15 years over 33 tracks of hard-to-find and previously unreleased productions. Old fans needing to re-up their collections and newcomers looking for a fix of classic techno can get their paws on Shake’s handiwork when it’s made available this February on 3-CD, 4-LP + 7″, and digital formats from the Rush Hour label.

Artist to Watch: Tanlines

Who:Tanlines
Where: Brooklyn, NY

It is telling that Tanlines can still put on an amazingly fun dance show in the stifling, sticky summer heat of Brooklyn; otherwise, the duo’s synthetic tropical beats would seem to be the product of poseurs. With a perpetual crowd of sweat-drenched, gyrating bodies at their feet, it’s clear that Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm can bring the heat as well as they can handle it. With an upcoming full-length on True Panther and remixes for Glasser, Telepathe, and Au Revoir Simone already under their belts, the boys of Tanlines will soon be bringing their tropical flavor to many more ears.

Rainer Weichhold “Infernal”

German house and techno producer Rainer Weichhold throws a bit of a twist into his repertoire with his latest single, “Infernal.” The veteran DJ seems to try something new—making techno beats with the sounds of classic disco. Instead of hypnotic synth and drum machine loops, Weichhold used samples of live drums and percussion, bass guitar, and string sections to bring his grooves to life. The affect is still as chilly as any run-of-the-mill techno track, but “Infernal” stands apart thanks to its unique sonic lineage.

Daniel Meteo Working Class

These 10 new tracks, plus electro-boogie romp “The Beat of the Heart” from 2008, mark a departure from Berliner Daniel Meteo’s deep, dubby, island roots-inspired productions on ~scape and his own Meteosound imprints. His new approach crisscrosses genre borders, adding ambient and pop flavors, and the results are mixed. “In the Mood” is about serendipitously finding love while out walking in the sunshine, a journey far too soft and sentimental for a post-midnight rambler like Meteo, who recovers his skills for the darker arts on mid-tempo steppers “Grace,” “Return of the Pure,” and “On the Corner,” along with the patient acid-reggae-bass grooves of the title track.

Hyperdub’s First 2010 Release Has a Funky Stutter from Scratcha DVA

The venerable Hyperdub label will be staying as busy as ever come the new year, with three highly anticipated singles arriving before the end of March. The first is from young grime upstart DVA (a.k.a. Scratcha DVA), who goes into more UK funky territory on his latest slice, Natty/Ganja. “Natty” features collapsing percussive elements, intense polyrhythms, and a tribal feel that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Culoe de Song record. “Ganja,” on the other hand, is a bit sillier, its wonky synth line, organ stabs, and soca-like percussion creating a perfect ringtone for mobile devices everywhere.

Natty/ Ganja comes out January 18 on Hyperdub Recordings.

2. Ganja

City Guide: Minneapolis

Cheap lunch, good coffee, music, parks, and kittens. We love Minneapolis.

For part two of our City Guide episodes, we sent a camera to producer and longtime MPLS resident Martin Dosh. Dosh braved the mid-November chill to show us where to find lunch for under three dollars and places to make and buy music, and then offers up some potentially apocryphal local park history.

Since 2002, XLR8R has produced in-depth city guides by talking to the people who know cities best: the musicians and artists responsible for creating vibrant local scenes. This episode also coincides with the release of the Minneapolis edition of XLR8R‘s City Guide iPhone application. To download the City Guide app, go to xlr8r.com/cityguide or type in “XLR8R Scion City Guide” in the iTunes app store.
