Javelin Tours and Invites Fans to Create Record Covers

As they did on their debut, Brooklyn’s Javelin will once again be screenprinting over record sleeves acquired from thrift shops for their latest 12″ on Thrill Jockey. (To check out some awesome examples of their past work, go here). But this time around, the guys are inviting fans to send in their own thrifted record covers, personalizing the record in a truly unorthodox way. Direct from Thrill Jockey, here’s how to get your own unique record sleeve:

1) You pick a sleeve out and mail it here by January 18:

Thrill Jockey Records
P.O. Box 08038
Chicago, IL 60608 2) On the inside of the jacket, write your name, address, and email. This is how we will identify which one is yours when you place your order.

3) When placing the order with our mail order department, be sure to include MY JACKET in the order message. We will then match up your details and send you your unique copy!

Number Two comes out on February 16, and in anticipation, Javelin will be playing some select cities before its release. If you live in one of the following cities, consider yourself lucky—the group’s live shows are a force to be reckoned with.

CLP feat. RQM “Designer (Lazer Sword Remix)”

The boys of Lazer Sword bring their bass-driven blap sound to CLP‘s collaboration with RQM, glitching it into a sharp, angular piece of hip-hop. RQM’s vocals and intelligent rhymes smooth the edges a bit, but generally, this slice is perfect for floors where futuristic hip-hop and bass music reign.

Inbox: Jay Haze

For this week’s Inbox, XLR8R steps into the ring with Berlin-based U.S. expat Jay Haze (a.k.a. Fuckpony). The many-monikered producer and label owner coos about his Roland 808, Otis Redding, and London, swims (unsuccessfully) with dolphins in the Amazon, and deftly brings justice to his oppressors. Check out our recent in-studio sesh with Mr. Haze or catch his latest offering, Let the Love Flow, which is out now on BPitch Control.

XLR8R: What are you listening to right now?

Jay Haze: Otis Redding—”I’ve Got Dreams to Remember.” Otis just hits the right spot for me.

What’s the weirdest story you have ever heard about yourself?

That before I played a gig, I demanded to receive two grams of angel dust and some crack cocaine—and that when it wasn’t delivered, I threw a diva episode. (Unfortunately, I have never had the chance to try crack or angel dust.)

What band did you want to be in when you were 15?

A Tribe Called Quest or Beastie Boys. It was the music I skated to.

Worst live show experience?

I was asked to do a show for a lower-than-my-normal fee with the explanation that there would be no charge for entry, hence a smaller budget from the promoters. Then on our way into the club, we saw the security guard accepting 20 bucks from guests for entry. I was scheduled to play a live set and there was no stage and no mixer. We weren’t given any drink tickets and had to pay for our own drinks! On top of that, they booked a room in a horrible hotel with a 10 a.m. checkout time. To end the story proper, of course they didn’t have our money either. We never would have expected such treatment from a magazine like Vice! So we proceeded to acquire the editor’s credit card and charged our fees’ worth of sex toys (blow up dolls, anal beads, celebrity mouths, huge black dildos) and had them sent to their office. Somehow, the people at Vice magazine didn’t have a sense of humor for this prank, which explains the aforementioned rumor about me… 🙂

Favorite city to play?

I guess it’s still London. I just feel so comfortable there, and not only playing at Fabric; the other parties I play there are always wicked. Such a varied mix of people and open-mindedness just makes for a special night every night I party there.

Favorite studio toy?

Roland 808. I can sit there and mess with it for hours in headphones. I just love the sound. I’m a sine-wave junkie, always have been.

What is one thing you couldn’t live without?

Love.

What is your favorite item of clothing?

This ’60s surfer shirt I found in Tokyo, of course, at a specialty shop for ’60s surfer clothes. The shop has since been closed and I have never seen a shirt like this again! I just feel good wearing this shirt.

If you could reduce your music to a single word, what would it be?

Sex.

If you had to listen to one song on repeat for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?

Pink Floyd—”Wish You Were Here.”

Which horror movie are you the most like?

Saw V.

What did you always get in trouble for when you were little?

Skateboarding and playing loud music.

Which other artist would you most like to work with next?

Andre 3000, Cody Chesnutt, Dr. Dre.

What’s the last thing you read?

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

Complete this sentence: In the future…

I hope all people on earth will come to embrace the power of love and free ourselves from the profit-driven society we currently live in, one which only promotes slavery and further divisions between us.

Stupidest thing you’ve done in the last 12 months?

I went traveling in the Amazon in February. I was in the river and tried to play with the pink river dolphin (huge dolphin; not Flipper), and, as he was coming up for air, he bashed me and broke two ribs! I was out in the jungle with no medical facilities other than shamans! I would say trying to play with wild dolphins was really stupid.

What’s next?

Collecting the money from my charity project DJs for DRC and planning a trip to the Congo in early 2010 to shoot a documentary and work with local charities. Once I finish this, I will think about more music. I am nearly finished producing three albums from three different rappers. Oh, and I will take my annual five-week trip to Brazil, of course. 🙂

James Pants “Thin Moon”

There is an elegance to James Pants‘ compositions that rides beneath their funkiness. On “Thin Moon,” the first single from his upcoming album, a spacey ’80s synth loop is coupled with plucked strings, electric guitar strums, and ephemeral snippets of conversation. Coupled with Pants’ high, melancholy croon, the piece maintains a graceful simplicity that is part Kelley Polar and part Dam-Funk. Lovely sounds for a lonely night.

Solomun Dance Baby

After three years of releasing 12-inches for the likes of Four:Twenty, liebe*detail, and his own Diynamic imprint, Bosnia-born, Hamburg-based Mladen Solomun unleashes his debut long-player. Overlook the mildly tacky album title (and, indeed, track titles) and Dance Baby is a quality debut that deploys deep-house signifiers with relative subtlety and nuance. Individual tracks seem best when they sound purpose-built to ease into a Ben Watt DJ set (the bubbly opener “Country Song,” the string-embellished “Hypnotize”), but, given a few plays, the album also works as a flowing, coherent whole. It’s not immediately clear why Solomun chose to package the release with a picture of a millipede—perhaps he’s suggesting that the music is going to get lots of legs moving.

Bleep, Give Up Art, and Shaun Bloodworth Team for N/S/E/W Project

What started as a home-grown collaborative project to document the new electronic-music underground between Sheffield-based photographer Shaun Bloodworth and the Give Up Art design studio has grown into something larger with the assistance of Bleep.com. The online music retailer commissioned the artists to expand on their vision in four locations: Glasgow representing the North, London and Bristol as the South, East Coast America, and California for the West—creating a fully conceived piece that’s basically a who’s-who of the current electronic scene. Included in the project are portraits of producers like Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, FaltyDL, Daedelus, and Skream, to name a few, and a CD of music from 12 of the photographed artists. A limited-edition run is available for pre-release today at the Bleep web store, where several new audio samples are also available. Check out a few of the photos along with the full tracklist below.

Bot’Ox “Blue Steel (Azari & III Remix)”

Parisian label head and Italo patron Cosmo Vitelli and Tekel‘s Julien Briffaz are the automobile-obsessed Bot’Ox, whose leftfield new-wave disco offers some of the coldest productions in recent memory. On their remix of the French duo’s latest track, “Blue Steel,” Toronto’s Azari & III take the track’s chilly sounds and puts them into an even deeper freeze—making for a haunting number with singer Anna Jean crooning sublime melodies from what sounds like a barren ice tunnel.

Minus and Raster-Noton Present CONTAINER

It’s been 10 years since the last time artists from electronic labels Minus and Raster-Noton collaborated on the New Forms release and performance project in Leipzig, Germany. Now, the minimalist audio and visual masters are again combining their efforts for CONTAINER, a night of ideas and new takes on performance at WMF in Berlin. Contributing to the event are label heads Richie Hawtin, Olaf Bender, and Carsten Nicolai along with choice visual artists Matthew Hawtin and Ali Demirel and performers JPLS and nibo, who will be “introducing an experimental platform of performative interaction that promotes the labels’ overlapping conceptual structures to form a unique laboratory of sound.” Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the future of live music.
