Shure’s SRH840 Headphones Reviewed

The Shure brand is not alien to the studio, stage, or even subway platform; the company’s microphones, wireless systems, and in-ear monitoring devices are legendary recording and performance workhorses, as well as popular in personal audio thanks to the SE530 earphones. Now, Shure is positioned to invade the mixing console; and with the closed-back, circumaural SRH840 Professional Monitoring Headphones, the company has an immediate critical listening contender offering platinum engineer performance at a project-studio-friendly $199 price point. The SRH840 signature is relatively neutral without being in any way dull. Covering 5 Hz to 25 kHz, the 40mm drivers’ treble is not overly brightened, bass is deep and quick, and mids are mildly pushed in a musical sense, gently rounding hot edges. With 102dB/mW sensitivity (44 ohms impedance) the SRH840s don’t need amping to avoid congestion (though it never hurts to render full transient extension). Driven out of the board, laptop, etc., these collapsible (though not wholly “portable”) cans show no grain no pain. Aesthetically, the SRH840s are definitely not geared toward audiophile vanity, but the extended comfort and clarity could have informed home listeners just as enthralled as producers. These phones don’t have the “bite” some prefer with distortion-rich recordings, but for tracking or mixing, the SRH840s are glare-free and fairly open for closed cans, providing isolation and engaging reproduction.

900x “The Black Beach”

After 10 years of pounding out that sweet pop charm, the Asthmatic Kitty stable veers off the pop battlefield into “Hub City”—that’s Lubbock, Texas—for its Library Catalog series, and this instrumental track from sound pioneer 900x (a.k.a. James McAllister) is just a small slice of what’s to come. Cruising through the South Plains region of Northwestern Texas, McAllister tightly weaves strands of deep space ambience through a wash of padded beats and ’80s synths to spruce up the serene landscape just outside the car window.

Decibel Fest’s Music Conference

While Seattle’s fast-approaching Decibel festival is mostly about amazing performances from many XLR8R favorites, the event also features an educational aspect, with workshops, round-table discussions, and panel talks. While the festival rages all night, the daylight hours bring Mad Professor and others talking about dub music’s influence on electronic production, Speaking in Code director Amy Grill in conversation with the Wighnomy Bros., and good old Chris Willits giving a talk on sound design and processing.

The Decibel Festival and dB Conference start this Thursday. For more information on the conference, visit the conference website. For the complete musical line-up at Decibel, visit the Decibel site.

Jern Eye “Get Right feat. Mistah FAB, Zumbi, and Jake One”

Bringing together four masterminds from the hip-hop world, Oakland resident Jern Eye joins up with Mistah FAB, Zion I‘s Zumbi and producer Jake One on this soul-infected cut from Eye’s forthcoming offering, Vision. With beats as raw as the hood he hails from, “Get Right” should have no problem becoming the latest bass-blasting anthem for the ’09 fall season.

N-Type Rinse: 09

On this uneven mix, N-Type serves up a snapshot of dubstep’s trajectory from masturbatory bassline wobbling into sexier sonic realms that might actually compel bodies to swing together on the dancefloor. The winning universal thread here is roots funk, highlighted by two LD remixes, Mungo’s Hi-Fi’s “International Roots,” and John & Jehn’s “Looking For You,” along with his fine original production, “King of Kong.” Stiffer but still danceable stuff comes from the Others’ “Dot 2 Dot,” Distance’s “Twilight,” and Kromestar & Jay 5ive’s “Bass 96.” But just when it starts to get freaky, funky, and fun during the soul-stirring “Burning Up/Take You Back (Tease)” by Skream/Benny Page, N-Type pulls the plug and shuts down the gear a bit too soon.

Inbox: Blue Scholars

XLR8R’s Inbox checks in with Saba Mohajerjasbi, the DJ half of Seattle-based hip-hop duo Blue Scholars. The snarky Moharjerjasbi talks to us about frat boys, high school Nintendo-core bands that wouldn’t let him join, and his all-time favorite band, Next. Blue Scholars’ latest offering, the Oof! EP, is out now on Massline.

XLR8R: What are you listening to right now?
Saba Mohajerjasbi: Discovery LP.

What’s the weirdest story you have ever heard about yourself?
I’ve heard several. The weirdest stories usually involve a girl who thinks I’m extremely kind and intelligent. I don’t understand why, because TV raised me to be an ignorant jerk.

In which band did you want to be when you were 15?
There were these guys at my junior high who were in this cover band. They did mostly songs from The Cure and themes from 8-bit Nintendo games like RC Pro-Am and Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. I wanted to be in that band so bad. Those guys were so cool. They wouldn’t let me join and I was never sure why. I assumed it was because I always buttoned my shirt to the top and because I didn’t have any credibility as a musician. I actually still don’t think they’d let me join.

Worst live show experience?
The worst are the ones in my dreams. I have this recurring nightmare where I’m perpetually on tour opening for “hip-hop pioneers.” After each show, a bunch of frat guys approach me and tell me how “real” I keep it and how much they “hate mainstream rap” because “it’s all about bitches and bling.” Sometimes I wake up screaming, and sometimes it’s not a dream.

Favorite city in which to play?
Any city that is lacking a drive-thru liquor/firearms store is fine with me.

Favorite studio toy?
TOWNFOLKHELLA.

What is one thing you couldn’t live without (excluding the obvious essential, i.e. air, water, etc.)?
TOWNFOLKHELLA.

What is your favorite item of clothing?
Button-up socks.

If you could reduce your music to a single word, what would it be?
That pretty much sums up the problem right there.

What would we find you doing on a Sunday afternoon in Seattle?
Typing out answers to interviews. You know, my biggest influences and how I got started making music. Really cool stuff.

For what did you always get in trouble when you were little?
Doing my own thinking. But I got into even more trouble doing other people’s thinking.

With which other artist would you most like to work next?
Oops… I read that as “With which other artist would you most like to work? Next?” and I was gonna say, “Next? I guess that might be cool. I mean, they haven’t really had a hit since “Too Close” but it might be decent to get RL Hugger and gang together again for some remixes. I dunno if that leather-vest-but-no-shirt R&B thing is really hittin’ in ’09 tho.”

What’s the last thing you read?
A question about whether or not I wanted to work with Next. That was weird.

Complete this sentence: In the future…
I’ll likely think about the past and say, “Darn, I should have thought more about my future.”

Stupidest thing you’ve done in the last 12 months?
I watched almost all of season 4 of Lost on my laptop in one day. Seriously, I think I hate every character on that show except for Sayid, Jin, and Sun.

What’s Next?
Well, their original name was Straight4ward, an R&B group comprised of RL Hugger, and brothers Terry and Raphael Brown. KayGee of Naughty By Nature signed them and produced their first record, Rated Next. It had a feature from Adina Howard and another from Koffee Brown, as well as some others I can’t remember right now. That pretty much exhausts my knowledge of Next. I’m not sure why I keep getting asked about them.

Oneman Offers Free Mix

As summer slowly comes to its end, 2-steppin’ London DJ extraordinaire Oneman looks toward the crisp and colorful coming months with his latest mix, Fall for Autumn. The opening saxophone solo may lament for summers past, but the rest of the mix, which features tracks from the likes of Skream, Zomby, and D1, is chilly enough to be the perfect soundtrack for those rainy fall days spent inside. BURNS “First Move (Fred Falke Remix)”

The UK’s BURNS has found a kindred spirit in “First Move” remixer Fred Falke. No stranger to burning down the house, Falke smooths out BURNS’ punchy electro-house beats with his trademark warm pad-synths and funky bass and guitar work, while leaving the bouncing energy of the original intact—a formula that promises to ignite any willing dance party.
