Artist to Watch: Kingdom

Who:Kingdom
Where: Brooklyn, NY

Massachusetts native Kingdom (a.k.a. Ezra Rubin) has only taken up residence behind the decks in the past few years, but the Brooklyn artist has been messing around with music since childhood—a music teacher actually showed him how to use MIDI at the age of 12. While his next-level mixes often feature the usual bass-heavy suspects—Baltimore club, U.K. garage, bassline, dubstep, kwaito, dancehall, etc.—Kingdom shows no fear when it comes to sounds too cheesy or flamboyant for the average DJ, be it a refix of a Eurodance anthem like DJ Jean’s “The Launch” or reworkings of R&B divas like Crystal Waters, Ciara, SWV, or Aaliyah. Volume One, his first official mixtape, was birthed in his cousin’s basement in North Carolina in 2006, and its success has led to the release of Volume Two, gigs on both coasts, DJ jaunts to the U.K., and the upcoming release of his first single, “Mindreader” b/w “You,” on the Acephale and Fools Gold labels.

Phosho feat. Cerebral Vortex “Control Dub”

Phosho, the more electro-minded moniker of San Francisco’s grimey Salva, has joined forces with SF-based MC Cerebral Vortex for the synth-laden “Control.” On this dub version of the track, Phosho chops the vocal into fine slices and syncopates them perfectly with percussive synths and straight-forward beats tailor made for the dancefloor.

Amanda Blank Tours I Love You

Club-rap MC-turned-pop sensation Amanda Blank of Spankrock and Sweatheart notoriety will be hitting the road later this month for a U.S. tour to support her much-anticipated debut full-length, I Love You, which dropped yesterday on Downtown Recordings. With big fish such as Diplo, Switch, and XXXChange on board for the album’s production, Blank‘s material should shoot torrents of sheer electricity throughout the dancefloor in the live setting. Noise-pop duo Matt & Kim will join Blank on her trip across America.

Jason Forrest Releases iPhone App

In the beginning of last summer we premiered an exclusive mix from Berlin’s DJ Donna Summer (a.k.a. Jason Forrest) showcasing his unquenchable desire to rock the party. Now, nearing end of the summer of ’09, we bring you more from the Cock Rock Disco label owner. As a collaboration with Agile Partners, creators of the Guitar Toolkit, Forrest has developed his own iPhone app called Star6. Simply put, the application is a sound remixing instrument that allows you to create an infinite variety of noises from your own samples or by using the free presets. You can find more information on the app’s website or by going to the Star6 Vimeo page. And you can download Star6 here here.

Horse Meat Disco Offers Comp and Mix

It used to be only on Sunday nights at the Eagle London in Vauxhall, London that you could enjoy the pure disco pleasure of Horse Meat Disco, but now, thanks to the release of their first official mix CD, you can get down to their choice sounds any time you like. Available today on Strut and crafted by the dance club’s resident DJs, the release comes complete with a 16-song classic-disco dance mix on one disc as well as 12 unmixed tracks on the second. In celebration of the mix’s release, the London crew has put together a free half-hour mix, available for download here. More information on the first Horse Meat Disco mix CD can be found here.

Pictureplane Dark Rift

On his impressive debut album, Denver artist Pictureplane (a.k.a Travis Egedy) has cooked up a potent brew of new wave, old rave, damaged art rock, and modern U.K. thump. “Solid Gold” is a fuzzy-yet-emotive electro-house number that, thanks to Egedy’s delicately delivered vocals, lacks the beefy bravado that often makes the genre such a snore. The synth stabs and mean piano melodies found on “Trance Doll” and “5th Sun” are full-scale salutes to classic rave, while “New Mind” updates the kind of ’90s vocal dance pop that powered MTV’s The Grind. With “Time Teens” and “True Ruin” employing the skittery beats of U.K. funky, Dark Rift proves that even DIY warehouse kids can make some first-rate dance music.

Free Rebolledo Mix up on Roof.FM

Mexican DJ/producer Rebolledo, one of a handful of artists on Matias Aguayo’s new Argentinian house imprint, Cómeme (to be featured in our upcoming Labels We Love online special) is prepping the company’s fourth release, his single “Guerrero.” In anticipation of said record, Rebolledo put together an eccentric mix for Roof.FM that features tracks from Grandmaster Flash to Justus Köhncke and nearly everything in between. You can cop the free download here.

Dinky’s Anemik to be Released in October

Of course, we love the Ellen Alliens and Beth Gibbonses out there, but they’re just the start of bringing electronic music’s boys’-club vibe down a notch. On that note, we share with you the news of Chilean-born, Berlin-residing Dinky (a.k.a. Alejandra Iglesias) and her upcoming fourth album, Anemik, slated for release October 5 on Mathew Johnson’s Wagon Repair label. The forthcoming record is said to be a “musing on femininity and the fine line between romance and delirium,” which is something we think the techno world could very well use. Flavored with plenty of acoustic instruments, analog electronics, and a strong emphasis on voice, Anemik promises to be dreamy, nightmarish, romantic, and befuddling while remaining quintessentially Dinky. The record’s tracklisting is below.

1. Childish
2. Romaniks
3. Westoid Feat. Updates
4. Gold Fishes
4. Rain Fallic
5. Anemik
6. Glacial
7. Ceramik
8. Glassic
9. Skyped
10. Epilepsia
11. Fadik
12. Nocturnal
