Artist To Watch: Paco Osuna

Spain isn’t exactly known as a minimal techno hotspot (except for those magical two weeks in June known as Sónar). After all, the country is home to Ibiza, an island overstuffed with pudgy, drug-addled clubbers collectively losing their minds to Euro-space dance music. But in recent years, a handful of artists have succeeded in putting Barcelona on the techno map, and none more so than Paco Osuna. With his Club4 parties bringing in top-flight DJs and his Mindshake record label releasing a steady stream of high-quality techno, Osuna has certainly caught people’s attention. Richie Hawtin is a fan, having tapped Osuna for a number of releases and remixes; this year’s Orbeat EP was particularly good, and we’re looking forward to his remixes of Plastikman for Minus’ 10th anniversary compilation. Last fall’s Twins EP also lit up minimal dancefloors, so anticipation is high for a proper artist album, which is in the works. 2009 will also find Osuna doing a stint in Chicago while he focuses on DJing more in the United States and Latin America.

Various Artists Fuse Presents Deetron

Following up volumes by Adam Beyer, Shinedoe, and Steve Bug, among others, Swiss DJ/producer Deetron continues Belgian tech-house club Fuse’s mix series. The mix starts out in oscillating, off-center furrows, gradually changing proportions until increasingly flushed with accents—make that jack-cents—borrowed from peak-hour house. A transition through swatches of Gene Hunt, Jerome Derradji, Henrik Schwarz/Âme/Dixon, Adam Marshall, Trus’me, and Redshape goes from pheromone-drunk thump to more cosmic disassociated dub. The set closes out groggy and elated, weaving home through Shackleton’s bleak fades, the Lost Men’s melodic drifts, Radio Slave’s hunching bass, and Mr. Monday’s plinky rapture. The result is a hybrid vehicle–lean efficiency vs. tense congestion, but always crackling with electricity.

Songs About Dancing and Drugs
!K7
Release Date: February 17

Jeremy Shaw released the Fight Sounds EP on Trevor Jackson’s Output Recordings in 2006. Then the label collapsed and other than a Christmas tune, this quietly restrained canvas of electronics and acoustics is the first we’ve heard from him since. Shaw stayed busy during the interim making video and visual art, and coming up with lyrics about unanswered questions, uncharted beaches, and burnt bridges. Yes, there are a few about dancing and drugs in here as well.

Telefon Tel Aviv
Immolate Yourself
BPitch Control
Release Date: Out Now

But Shaw wasn’t off the radar as long as Josh Eustis and Charlie Cooper, since their latest offering follows up on Map of What is Effortless, released before Facebook’s domain name was even registered (2004). Immolate Yourself is their first for Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control imprint, and is far grander in sound than previous albums. Hackneyed it may be, I’m going to go ahead and use the word “sweep” for describing what exactly these guys’ dense synth arrangements do.

MP3: “The Birds”

Intrusion
The Seduction of Silence
Echospace
Release Date:

As you will surmise from its title, the synths on Stephen Hitchell’s new album do not sweep. Nor do they crescendo, crash, or shriek. Hitchell (who also records as Soultek and cv313) has infused dub with techno here, the result being an album quite worthy of its name. The aforementioned synths whisper and tremble in the background, and more than any other instrument, static claims the spotlight on most tracks.

Mr Lif.
I Heard It Today
Self-Release
Release Date: April 21

A good reason to like Mr. Lif these days (aside from the fact that he named his label Bloodbot Tactical) is his lyrical flow on Heard It. It’s a troubled world we live in, and the conscious MC and Perceptionists member covers every topic between war and credit crunch on this release. He doesn’t even let Obama off the hook for examination. Production help on the album comes from Edan, J-Zone, and several up-and-comers.

Hot Chip with Robert Wyatt and Geese
Hot Chip with Robert Wyatt and Geese
Astralwerks
Release Date: January 27

Electro-pop’s busiest band found enough time to enlist experimental psych-prog legend Robert Wyatt for help on what they’re calling “a little present for their fans.” Wyatt chose three songs from the group’s Made in the Dark release, and together, the two parties re-recorded them. This is, obviously, not typical Hot Chip fare, but the boys wear avant-jazz well. Geese contributed a remix to the disc (excuse me, present) as well.

Psychic Ills
Mirror Eye
The Social Registry
Release Date: Out Now

Speaking of albums that should bear the prefix “avant.” Psychic Ills are like a jam band that got trapped inside a copy of Ableton Live and just decided to make the most of their situation. An amalgamation of electric guitars and hypnotic electronics, Mirror Eye finds the group reunited after some time off (theme of the week, apparently) and travels through a range of styles and ends with a track that’s one long chord. That they chose to name one song “Fingernail Tea” is not the only quirky fact here.

Tribe
Tribe
Community Projects/Planet E
Release Date: Out Now

Called “near perfect” by XLR8R scribe Walter Wasacz, Tribe’s latest, self-titled release is proof that this famed jazz collective from Detroit is still capable of compelling compositions. Tribe was always an expressionist act, so those expecting a traditional jazz offering should skip to the next paragraph. The album is solemn in its mood and complex with the arrangement of trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, and techno fans will be happy to hear that Planet E label boss Carl Craig stopped by to lend a synthesizer and produce the disc.

Mike Snow
“Animal (Crookers Remix)”
Download

The good people at RCRD LBL email me and thousands of other folks a new MP3 every morning, and this remix came through the inbox late last week. Mike Snow is a mysterious figure for whom little information exists, but we know Crookers for their French-touch synths and top-shelf remixes. Here, they’ve added an upbeat, nu-disco flavor to Snow’s track.

Freerange Records Colour Series: White 06 Sampler
Freerange
Release Date: March 30

The Freerange crew gathered last year’s most well-received tracks from the label’s single releases, threw four brand-new tracks in, stirred them all together, and voila! It’s the sixth installment of the label’s Colour series. This time around, they chose white, and since that color is commonly associated with purity, it’s fitting that tracks here are unadulterated, smooth techno tunes. If I still took certain pills that make a person happy and went to giant warehouse parties, this would be the kind of music I’d want to hear.

Bamabounce
“Punch Em In Da Face”
Listen

As noted in the description for this week’s podcast, Bamabounce’s track starts with an angry guy yelling the line, “Everybody in the club, if you hate someone right now, you need to turn to them and punch them in the fucking face!” Those last three words he repeats for a very long time before some dirty B-more breaks show up and complete the track. Like Mike Snow up there, details on Bamabounce aren’t plentiful, but you don’t need a 10-page bio to enjoy the antics on this track.

RIP Clone Records

We know Netherlands-based label Clone for releases from the likes of Dexter, Alden Tyrell, and Legowelt. Sadly, future generations of music heads will not be seeing any new material from this label, as Clone recently announced it will be closing its doors.

Founded by DJ Serge in the late ’90s, the label championed a Dutch music scene that catered to fans of techno, disco, Italo, and what’s often been called “sci-fi electro,” as well as starting a re-issue imprint dubbed Clone Classic Cuts.

From a recent press release:

“After running the label since 1993/94 we recently noticed that we were going to repeat ourselves… there is not much we haven’t touched in our field, from very ‘obscure’ records to ‘underground’ dance floor hits that got big festival crowds and Balearic holiday ravers moving. So what is there left to do? Basically there is no challenge at this moment. We can continue releasing everything we like (from people we like) without a marketing strategy and without a potential buyers [sic] in mind as we used to do, but we already did so for many years.”

Clone has two remaining releases in the queue, from I-f and Marco Bernardi, and has also said it will continue with Clone Classic Cuts.

Podcast 70: Chavy Boys of London

Baltimore club music has a rep for being energetic, but from the sounds of this mix, which is primarily just that, the Chavy Boys of London must keep an entire fridge stocked with Red Bull—and pound a few down when commissioned to do DJ mixes for music websites.

Ripping through just over an hour’s worth of music, Scottie B, Shawn Caesar, and DJ King Tutt, most commonly associated with the Unruly Records crew, give us a primer on how many styles you can pack into one mix while simultaneously delivering one of the most hyperactive podcasts XLR8R has featured in a while. The mix—as always, exclusive to XLR8R.com—bounces between 4/4 and two-step beats, Crookers and Say-Wut, and includes the late K-Swift’s voiceover interspersed in the madness. And when it comes to shout-outs, there will be none greater than the MC on track 29 as he rails, “Everybody in the club, if you hate someone right now, you need to turn to them and punch them in the fucking face!

Bisc1 “Turbulence (RMX Blend by Cassettes Won’t Listen & Scott Thorough)”

Bisc1 unleashed When Electric Night Falls in early 2008, but apparently, he’s not quite ready to put the album away, since he’s announced the release of The Strange Love Project. Bisc commissioned 10 producers to select and remix tracks from WENF, then called up 20-plus visual artists to create accompanying artwork, thereby making a release that’s part remix album and part art installation. And if that weren’t good enough, he’s thrown the entire thing on his website and is giving it away for free.

Tribe Tribe

Not a Carl Craig record, though it has the stamp of the famed Detroit techno producer throughout, the Tribe’s new full-length is a near-perfect record for the times. By standing behind the politics of love in an age of global dread, that jazz remains an on-message American art form. The mood set here is solemn; the spacey abstract expressionism of the original group’s pioneering early 1970s material is largely absent, their sound re-shaped into a neo-traditional funk-jazz package. Yet surviving members Phil Ranelin, Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, and Doug Hammond sure can swing, especially on standout track “Livin’ in a New Day.” It’s layered with trombones, trumpets, saxophones, and Ranelin’s vocals, all deftly electronically treated by Craig in his Motor City studio.

Crystal Antlers Announce Debut Album

Among the myriad acts whose names bear the word “crystal,” these guys are worth sitting up and taking a listen to. It isn’t everyday, after all, that you hear punk music accompanied by pipe organs, which is exactly the brand of music Crystal Antlers offer to their fans.

After a couple 7″ singles, the Long Beach, CA-based band is ready to release its debut album, Tentacles, through Touch and Go on April 6 (Europe) and April 7 (North America). The 13 tracks were recorded in a single week in San Francisco, and, judging from dreary titles like “Dust” and “Vapor Trail,” lyrically deal with the idea of destruction. Or maybe they’re just the byproduct of seven sleepless days.

The band will head to Europe shortly and tour until mid-March. From there, they return Stateside for a few shows on the West Coast.

Reefer “Body Heat”

What was, according to the bio on their MySpace page, “quite possibly a drunken agreement” seems to have turned into quite the project for Islands frontman Nick Thorburn and Busdriver producer Daddy Kev. Though they’ve known one another for years, it wasn’t until 2008 that the two united their disparate musical styles under the name Reefer and released a self-titled debut album, which was recorded on the Maui coastline and most definitely bears that tropical influence. And while hip-hop doesn’t always mix well with traditional songwriting, the two seem to have found a balance here between programmed beats and acoustic guitars. Even FlyLo is feeling it.

AGF/Delay Ready Second Album

AGF’s a busy lady. Besides unveiling not one, but two solo full-lengths in 2008, then producing Ellen Allien’s Sool, the woman born Antye Greie-Fuchs has also been occupied with making the second album for her AGF/Delay project with partner Sasu Ripatti (a.k.a. Luomo, a.k.a. Vladislav Delay).

The duo is putting the finishing touches on Symptoms, the follow-up to 2005’s Explode, and will release the album on February 27 via BPitch Control.

In the meantime, Greie-Fuchs and Ripatti still have a batch of MP3s from Explode available at their site for download, should you be in need of more sultry, experimental pop this week. Of course, there’s always this number too.
