Petrona Martinez “La Vida Vale La Pena (Uproot Andy Remix)”

Bay Area neo-cumbia powerhouse, Bersa Discos, just pressed up another helping of Latin-flavored dance music with the Bersa Discos #4 EP. The new release features Brooklyn’s Uproot Andy on the a side, remixing the Afro-Colombian folk music of Petrona Martinez, Toto La Momposina, and Grupo Naidy, while Netherlands-based Sonido del Principe takes the b side. We have Uproot Andy’s dancefloor-friendly remix of Petrona Martinez here. Bersa Discos #4 is limited to just 1,000 copies worldwide, so this one’s best not slept on.

Best of 2008: Telepathe

Melissa Livaudais, of Brooklyn’s fringe dance duo, Telepathe, celebrates Lil’ Wayne and Warrior Queen.

What was the best album of 2008?

Lil’ Wayne Tha Carter III. So hard-hitting, so much bass and snare. So much Wayne, and still incredibly emotional!

What was the worst album?

I’m betting Nickelback. Not released, but it’s just a feeling. This band makes me want to throw up on myself.

Who was the best DJ of 2008?

Lauren Flax. She just straight-up educates the dancefloor. She fucking rules the house school, o.g. Detroit. Girls take their tops off when she DJs!

What was the best 12″ single of 2008?

Warrior Queen & The Heat Wave “Things Change (DJ C Remix)”

What will be big in 2009?

Warrior Queen. She’s best MC in the world, and I believe she is going to take over the world. I am so inspired by her.

Various Artists Compost Dreihundert: Freshly Composted Vol. 3

For its 300th release, and the third installment of its Freshly Composted sampler-style collection series, Compost Records proves once again that electronic neo- and dance-jazz not only deserves to remain on our musical radar, but might just be a beacon–not a blip. Compost’s signature warm, augmented chords and loping dance beats appear on tracks like Alif Tree’s “Mai” and Beanfield’s “Tides,” and Eddy Meets Yannah’s “Solid Ground” has that spiritual crescendo that Body & Soul would’ve died for. On perhaps the collection’s finest track, Wojtek Urbanski’s “Violet Violin” uses circa-2001 glitches and a broken beat to augment a proud and schizophrenic violin schema. If they’ll sound anything like this, let Compost’s next 300 roll on!

Señor Coconut Around the World

When Uwe Schmidt moved from Germany to Chile in 1996, he was determined to explore traditional Latin music in the context of the electronic sounds he’d been creating at home. As his monikers imply (another is Atom™), there is a bit of playfulness in his songs. How else would one account for his Cuban tempering of “Sweet Dreams,” or his marimba-led take of Prince’s “Kiss”? All songs on Around the World are covers, and all are treated with the same comic, musically exceptional care. The drumming is fantastic; the videogame digital effects combined with the live percussion and marimba on “Pinball Chacha” are proof enough of his skill as producer and musician.

Seattle Fest Hosts All-Star NYE Lineup

Don’t know where you’ll be when the ball drops this year? One option is to head to Seattle, for MICRO dB, the two-evening event happening December 30 and 31 at Neumos that will feature performances from international producers.

The first day will see some dirty action from Berlin-based pioneer, producer, remixer, and DJ Jesse Rose, whose bass-driven electro-house has tickled the clubs and festivals for over fourteen years. Pump yourself up for the his first-ever Seattle appearance ever by listening to his new track, “Forget My Name,” which will be released in vinyl format on December 15, via Rose’s own label, Front Room Recordings.

Also on day one, Los Angeles-based ambient dub-hop DJ Deru will bring his unique blend of melodic structures and cold, precise rhythm to the table. Meanwhile, wildcard producer novaTRON will offer his original breakbeats, improvised on the spot using his Tron Box, a self-constructed blend of audio hardware. Rounding out the first day’s happenings is newcomer SEED, who will take to the stage with his mutant genre of “Jazzchestral Glitch-Samba, Ballet Ghettotech, and Transcendental Elevator Music,” or so it’s been described by a recent press release. He will be performing alongside other members of the local music collective LiveNLove, including jazz vocalist Greer Sullivan and MC E@5E_95.

On day two, a “Dirty Dancing” New Year’s Eve, artful minimalist and owner of Palette Recordings, John Tejada, will bring his punchy, SoCal techno to the floor, while rising Seattle-resident Dave Pezzner (know simply as Pezzner) will transport listeners with his alternately sensual and funky tech-house. Left Coast tribal house DJ Michael Manahan will face off with distinctly dirty Nordic Soul. Eventually, Glaswegian Alex Smoke will cap the evening with his dark, flawless techno.

Tickets for the December 30 show will go for $15 pre-sale and $18 at the door. December 31 will cost you $20 presale and $25 at the door. Or plan ahead and buy a two-night pass for just $30.

Tim Hecker, Mint on Pop Ambient 2009

Kompakt‘s latest installment of sleepytime songs–otherwise known as the label’s Pop Ambient series–will see its ninth edition released on February 16 of next year.

Judging by the tracklisting, it’s looking to be another low-key, laidback affair, with tracks from regular contributors like Marsen Jules and Klimek, as well as artists like Tim Hecker and The Fun Years, who make their first appearance in the series here. Wolfgang Voigt also makes a rare appearance under his Mint alias for the occasion.

Pop Ambient 2009
01 Klimek “True Enemies & False Friends (Yesteryears Suite)”
02 Sylvain Chauveau “Nuage Iii”
03 Mint “Hindemith”
04 Popnoname “Nightliner”
05 Sylvain Chauveau “Fly Like a Horse”
06 Jürgen Paape “Ausklang (Burger/Voigt Mix)”
07 Marsen Jules “It’s Only Castles Burning”
08 Tim Hecker “Shosts”
09 Andrew Thomas “A Dream of a Spider”

Souvenir de Chine

Creaked Records unveiled Larytta‘s debut album, Difficult Fun, earlier this fall, and with it, the Switzerland-based duo of Guy Meldem and Christian Pahud proved they have no intention of staying in the musical lines of any genre, Difficult Fun being an album that’s practically the epitome of eclecticism. They keep us guessing with this quirky video, directed by Körner Union, and if you ever wanted to know what happens when you put a bunch of ducks in front of several mirrors, look no further.
