Dave Clarke I Love Techno

The techno purist is a rare find these days, as are the skills required to make the same genre sound futuristic after 20-plus years. I Love Techno shows why Dave Clarke continues to enjoy his rep as techno’s DJ don: Dark vibes take a stormy ride through sinewy minimalism, where beats tug and pull at each other within a tight funk grip. Clarke is a master of textural overlay: Squelchy acid ignites electro rhythms in DJ Surgeon’s “Electro Bass Head,” while sinister bass pummels Velvet Underwear’s kitschy-cool “The Same.” But Clarke’s expert mixing hand really makes it happen–at his touch, techno is released from its 4/4 confines and becomes something pulsing and alive. Relish the pure.

Swod Sekunden

Sekunden is the second Swod album from longtime Berlin collaborators Oliver Doerell and Stephan Wöhrmann, but it has the depth and maturity of a 10th release. Working with shards of piano and bass alongside minimal electronics and disjointed field recordings, Swod deconstructs melodies to their bare essentials. Opener “Montauk” builds a collage from piano and bass loops, while “Ja” lets drawn-out chords and found sounds guide its ascent. Elsewhere, “Belgien” is an emotional neoclassical composition, while album closer “Paintage” allows enough drums and static to end on a (minimally) louder note. Comprised of complex pieces with a decidedly limited palette, Swod’s Sekunden is a masterful, moving work.

Guitar Heroes of Warcraft?
In a juicy bit of always-thrilling, business-type news, Vivendi Universal, owners of Blizzard and the World of Warcraft properties, and Activision, proprietors of Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and (for old-school Atari fans) Pitfall, have decided to get into a money-lined bed together and create an entirely new mega-company called…Activision Blizzard.

Awful name. But what does the whole thing mean for the average gamer? Not a whole lot. No Night Elves in Guitar Hero. No Rolling Stones songs in WoW. Wait, that might be awesome….

At any rate, the move seems to have affected the whole industry positively, as shares of almost every other big company have risen in anticipation of other such mergers, from Grand Theft Auto makers Take-Two Interactive to Ubisoft, the French force behind Assassin’s Creed, which has been rumored to become part of EA for some time now. Even long-suffering Atari has seen its shares rise almost 8% as investors look for the company to get absorbed (read: saved from a miserable demise) in a similar move.

Yay, money!

Ghostbusters to Cross Streams Again
Last January, some footage of what appeared to be a new Ghostbusters game appeared online. And it was, quite simply, awesome. It seemed the game was a sure thing but Zoot Fly, the company behind the video, said it was simply a demo and that they had not acquired the rights to the Ghostbusters property from Columbia Pictures. After a few months of trying, it appeared they couldn’t make it happen and the game seemed dead. At least, their version did.

Fast-forward to now, and the internet is abuzz with the advent of another Ghostbusters game from Sierra–a real one. This one not only has the blessing of Columbia Pictures, but it was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and has the voice talent/likenesses of both men, along with Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray!

The game is scheduled for release in fall 2008, and each version–for the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and DS–will be somewhat different than the other. The 360 and PS3 games will be more realistic, solo adventures, and the Wii, PS2, and DS games will be a bit more cartoony, focusing on multiplayer.

William Atherton (Walter Peck), Brian Doyle Murray (the boy’s psychiatrist), and Annie Potts (Janine) have all signed on as well. No word on Rick Moranis, though Sigourney Weaver is confirmed to not be in the game.

While a script for a third Ghostbusters film–in which the team goes to Hell (seriously)–has been rumored for years, Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that the games will have nothing to do with that storyline. However, he stated that the game is essentially Ghostbusters III and plays out like a direct sequel to the first two movies.

A Holiday Gift from BioShock
This week 2K is giving BioShock owners a little incentive to give the game another go (which we fully intend on doing) by offering some brand-new content. Nothing too wild here, but a few things may add some spice to the child-killing (or saving, if you’re boring) antics of one of the year’s most popular games.

Here’s what you’re looking at:

– Sonic Boom: Hurls objects and foes with a blast of force
– EVE Saver: Plasmids use less EVE
– Vending Expert: Reduces prices at the vending machines
– Machine Buster: Increases the damage you deal to machines
– A new Xbox 360-only 100 pt. achievement called Brass Balls if you beat the game on ‘hard’ without dying
– A new and improved widescreen option

Nice.

Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” (Ed Banger)
If these Parisians’ 30-second moment on MTV convinced Yankee teens that there are better sounds beyond Nickelback and My Chemical Romance, God bless them for it.
Cameron Macdonald, XLR8R writer

Peter Bjorn & John “Young Folks” (Almost Gold)
Sure, I’m sick of this song, too. But don’t pretend you didn’t love it before it was on TV commercials, everyone’s mixtapes, and every other blog on the interweb. Great beat, plus Victoria Bergsman’s sweet voice and happy whistling? This song is like the indie “Hey Ya!”
David Ma, XLR8R writer

Dude N Nem “Watch My Feet” (TVT)
The emerging juke sound has quite a few bangers bubbling up around Chicago, but this one is a true piece of pop genius. It’s got the classic half-time/double-time, hip-hop/ghetto-house combination, and really fun party lyrics.
DJ C, Mashit

The Bug ft. Flowdan “Jah War” (Ninja Tune)
The Bug continues to pump out the toxic dancehall jams, and Flowdan is big on the mic!
El Carnicero, Slit Jockey

Gui Boratto “Beautiful Life” (Kompakt)
Even before the euphoric vocals kick in, people come up to ask what you are playing. The 12” of the year, such a happy, feel-good dance tune.
Peter Berard, Domino

Samim “Heater” (Get Physical)
It’s the best way to get Germans dancing to cumbia. A very original and fun song, and way more interesting than all that minimal techno out there.
DJ Ulysses, Scatalogics

Simian Mobile Disco “I Believe” (Wichita)
Incandescent. A moment of sincerity in a cynical and self-obsessed indie-dance scene.
Mosi Reeves, XLR8R writer

Durrty Goodz Axiom EP (Awkward)
Durrty is one of the most dynamic and talented rappers in the grime game, and some of the beats on this EP are stellar.
DJ C, Mashit

edIT “Battling Go-Go Yubari In Downtown L.A.”

Somewhere between slamming club beats and quirky dance music lies the music of ediT, the L.A.-based producer who, along with Flying Lotus, Glitch Mob, and Daedelus, is one of Southern California’s new IDM/hip-hop noisemakers. Kerri Chandler Southport Weekender Vol. 6

Kerri Chandler’s been on decks since the age of 9 and producing tracks since 15–and has been a house icon since his first early ’90s releases. The Southport Weekender festival’s been going for 20 years, attracting thousands each year. Put the two together and it would be harder to screw up than succeed. Predictably (in the best way possible), Chandler has mixed two discs of sterling deep house, one disc more minimal than the other. On both, though, Chandler’s penchant for soul (check “Life Starts Today” by Byron Moore and “(We Had) A Thing” by Abstract Truth) shines through. Weekend, schmeekend–these discs sound good anytime.

Rafter Sex Death Cassette

As a longtime producer, solo artist, and member of Sufjan Stevens’ entourage, Rafter Roberts has kept a pretty low profile. Sex Death Cassette, his second solo record, will hopefully change this. Blanketing weird-pop gems in a wash of hazy production, Sex Death Cassette brings to mind summer vacations and afternoon naps. At 35 minutes, the record’s 19 tracks twist and turn between heartfelt serenades (“I Love You Most of All”), fuzzed-out pseudo-reggae (“LoveTimeNowPlease”), and progressive indie rock (“Chances”). Despite its disparity of genre, however, the songs are all united by Rafter’s incredible production skills, which alone are worth the price.

The 12 Days of Christmas: Day 4

Hangar One Fraser River Raspberry Vodka

For Christmas this year, I wish for a little bit of summer. I’m a big fan of vodka: in particular, vodka and soda. I’ve been on a regular mission to find the best-flavored vodka and have had many disappointments along the way. Usually the flavors are the same: citrus, raspberry, vanilla, and so on, and they always taste cheap and syrupy. Not to mention, before I even drink it the smell alone makes me gag.

However, there is one choice that stands above the rest: Hangar One Fraser River raspberry vodka. Finding this brand required quite the search. Not only is the vodka itself exceptional, it is also infused with Meeker raspberries from the Fraser River Valley in Washington and has no need for any additional sugar or chemicals. The flavor is amazing: fresh, ripe raspberries that are a perfect balance of sweet and tart, and it makes the best vodka-soda I have ever had. The only problem is that Hangar One only makes one batch a year, when the berries are ripe, and it is therefore almost impossible to find. This is why Hangar One’s Fraser River raspberry vodka is topping my Christmas list. I think a bottle–or two–should tide me over until next summer and the rare occurrence that I find this again.
