Jongnic Bontemps ‘Skate Celebration’

Film composer Jongnic Bontemps has scored a soundtrack for “United Skates,” a documentary scheduled to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival tonight. The film spotlights the black roller skate culture in the U.S. and highlights hip-hop’s influence as a narrative. We’re told that Jongnic’s score has “hip-hop rhythmic elements along with traditional film score components.” It’s described as “instrumental hip-hop” (no lyrics).

Jongnic Bontemps, aka “JB”, is a classically trained composer with roots in the church and jazz world as a pianist. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, he studied music at Yale, Berklee and the University of Southern California. Earlier in his career, JB worked as a software developer and startup executive in New York City and later Silicon Valley before his startup was sold to HP enabling him to pursue his first love, music. He was selected as a Sundance Lab Composer Fellow in 2013 and received a Time Warner Artist Fellowship in 2014. He’s since composed music for over 50 projects spanning film, television, and video games.

Ahead of the premiere, Bontemps has shared “Skate Celebration,” a cut taken from the score, and made the following statements on the project and the track itself. Meanwhile, you can download “Skate Celebration” in full below.

“Film music has to tell a story without words. Its job is to add depth and dimension to the images and words presented on screen. That’s what attracted me to the medium; the opportunity to really express emotion with music alone. Dropping tracks into a film only goes so far as they usually do not twist and turn with the action and emotion on screen the way a piece of music can when its composed to the picture. In a medium where dialogue is king, you can’t have lyrics running in the background. Hip-hop grooves without lyrics can be great, but when you put it into the picture for two/ three-minute stretches, it sounds “loopy.” That led me to compose hip-hop music utilizing instrumental melodies, urban rhythms, and head nodding grooves that bend to the requirements of the picture. Putting all this together I call it cinematic hip-hop.”

“Skate Celebration” was written for a scene in United Skates where a beloved LA skating rink is closing its doors. All of the skaters who have made this rink their home have gathered on this last night, in what can only be described as a bitter sweet home going, as they say goodbye by skating the night away. The music had to underscore both the joy and sadness of the night. It had to walk the line between saying goodbye and the euphoria they feel while skating and being together. We decided to use a wordless voice to express the deep emotion of the night. I love working with voices, as nothing makes a connection like the human voice. It instantly expresses so much; we intrinsically get it. It’s actually the first scene in the movie that I scored, as the director wanted to replace the temp music for this scene right away. This was my first version of the cue and what you are hearing has only been adjusted to accommodate changes in the picture.”

Kenneth James Gibson ‘Far From Home’ (Closer To The End Mix)

Earlier this year, Kompakt released In The Fields of Nothing, the latest full length from Kenneth James Gibson.

Over the years, Gibson has amassed a beautifully sprawling back catalog under a dumbfounding amount of aliases, including [a]pendics.shuffle, Bell Gardens, Reverse Commuter, dubLoner, Kenneth James G., KJ Gibbs, Bal Cath, Eight Frozen Modules, and Premature Wig. Gibson’s latest LP on his full name lands on Kompakt nearly two years after his first outing on the Cologne-based imprint (The Evening Falls).

Conceived as a proper film soundtrack, the gorgeous 11-track LP presents a range of affecting moods, flowing through intricate, pop-like piano ballads, lush folk outings, and melancholic ambient cuts with understated subtly. The album was hugely inspired by the lushly forested mountain landscapes of his home region, Idyllwild, California, with each track provided a glimpse into the mind of Gibson on his early morning and late night wanderings in the wild.

In support of the LP, Gibson has offered up an alternate mix of album track “Far From Home,” which looks to ideas of our physical universe, as he explains:

“‘In The Fields Of Nothing’ wasn’t meant to have any vocal tracks but as I was listening to the mixes of ‘Far From Home’ the words just kept running through my head. It abstractly expresses the idea of another place out there in the physical universe, far from what we call home, that is much more sane. This mix is just another way of approaching the piece.”

You can download “Far From Home” (Closer To The End Mix) via WeTransfer below, with the full album available to purchase here.

Influences 07: George FitzGerald

George FitzGerald recently returned with his second album, All That Must Be—a 10-track long-player that documents a time when FitzGerald’s decade-long stint in Berlin came to an abrupt end, seeing him back in his hometown of London and becoming a father for the first time. The release also marked a change in creative process with FitzGerald focusing more heavily on the piano as opposed to the computer.

FitzGerald’s musical adventures started in the mid-2000s when he was employed at the London record store Black Market Records, the beginning of a formative period during which he consumed “more music than at any point” during his life. Naturally, these years through his teens and early 20s refined both his preferences as a consumer of music and similarly the signatures of his early output after a move to Berlin in 2010. Releases first came on Hotflush Recordings and ManMakeMusic, before he debuted on Aus Music and Hypercolour. Meanwhile, both his albums appeared on Double Six Recordings.

For this month’s Influences podcast, FitzGerald reflects on his early years in the British capital and selects some of his favorite records from this period—compiling a playlist, of sorts, of the tracks that stand out in his mind from the many that he consumed during this period. Given the soft, sensitive nature of much of FitzGerald’s work, it’s little surprise that the likes of Portishead, Thom Yorke, and Orbital make appearances—logical points of reference, you feel. Among these are some more unforeseen entries, the result being a gentle, thought-provoking listen that’ll draw your focus back in with a few surprises along the way.

“You listen to a lot of music in a lifetime. A lot of it terrible; some of it life-changing. It’s hard to distil from that vast edifice just what your “influences” are. My mind usually goes blank when people ask me the question. The truth is that the list of artists who have influenced my musical outlook is never static, so it’s quite hard to pin down. I don’t have a list written down somewhere with all of my favorite musicians.

“So when putting together this mix, I focussed on a formative period when I perhaps consumed more music than ever before or since in my life—my late teens and early twenties. I wanted it to be a true reflection of what I was listening to then—at that age, you haven’t quite mastered being a snob.

“There’s so much I couldn’t fit into one hour, but these are the records I couldn’t leave out. I keep revisiting them both for inspiration and relaxation, and their mark is all over my music.”— George FitzGerald

George FitzGerald will be playing alongside Bicep, Apollonia, Hunee, Mall Grab, Peggy Gou, Jeremy Underground, Joy Orbison, Nadia Rose, Nastia, Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed, and many more at this year’s Hideout Festival, taking place June 25 to 29 in Zrce Beach, Croatia. You find tickets to Hideout here.

Wild Style Lion feat. Kim Gordon ‘LoveWasInMe’ (Khan Rave Remix)

Later this month, Temple Traxx returns with a new record from Wild Style Lion and Kim Gordon.

Temple Traxx launched late last year with Cube 40’s devastatingly raw machine-driven 12″ Bad Computa, which was followed early this year with Remote Car Babe, another sweat-dripping collection of banging techno. Now, the label returns with its third release, LoveWasInMe Remixes, which features two wild reworks of Wild Style Lion and Kim Gordon’s “LoveWasInMe” by Khan of Finland (one-half of Wild Style Lion) and Tallmen 785.

In support of the release, the label has offered up Khan’s remix as today’s XLR8R download. For the remix, Khan goes deep, twisting the cut into a near-seven-minute techno thunderstorm, a cut that will twist bodies and minds on the dancefloor.

You can grab “Lovewasinme” (Khan Remix) via WeTransfer below, with the full release available here.

Baha is a young producer from Istanbul, with his roots in the Turkish hip-hop scene. He’s been stealthily pricking up ears with guest spots on Rinse FM and NTS since he moved to London last year.

The two-tracker lands two years after Baha’s Mavericks EP, and see’s Dimzy from UK drill group 67 providing vocals on this “haunting trap odyssey.”
