RVNG Intl.’s Commend Releases Miho Hatori & Dave Harrington Tape

Commend will release a performance from Miho Hatori & Dave Harrington via the Commend Here tape series.

Commend acts as the physical center of the RVNG universe and has played host to a number of unique and spontaneous performances within the walls of the store, which also features various products, records, and clothing. Over the last couple of years, RVNG has captured some of the performances and has begun sharing them via the limited-run Commend Tape series.

The first release in the series was a recording of Félicia Atkinson and Christina Vantzou’s collaborative performance Folded Galaxy, with Miho Hatori & Dave Harrington’s Mondialité representing the second release. Spread across two continuous sides, the driving downtempo performance is part of Hatori’s ongoing elaboration on philosopher Edouard Glissant’s theory of “globality,” an alternate form of global connection.

Mondialité is available exclusively via Commend as a limited-edition run of 35 hand-numbered cassettes.

Infiné Music Announces Arabstazy Compilation, Shares Mashup

On May 25, Infiné will release Under Frustration, a three-part compilation from Tunisian collective Arabstazy.

The compilation looks to the contemporary electronic music scene in the Arab World to “deconstruct the occidental perceptions that see the Arab World as a culturally united and homogeneous entity. It is a manifesto for the burgeoning wave of post-revolution futurism.” Tracks were gathered from artists connected to the concept of “frustration constrained creation.” With no imposed genre boundaries, the release features everything from drone and ambient to IDM, broken beat, and left-field techno.

Alongside the announcement, Infineé has shared a seven-minute mashup by Terra Aziz, available to stream via the player below.

You can pre-order the release here.

Download a New Mix from HAAi

There’s been a lot of talk around HAAi recently. The Australian DJ-producer, a Saturday resident of London’s Phonox club for over a year, has made a name for herself for her absorbing, slow-release style and eclectic selections. “I’m a big fan of long, winding, melon-twisting mixes,” she says. Having developed a discerning following across London for her well-versed extended sets, she’s now beginning to tour across Europe with increasing frequency.

Despite growing up in a remote Australian mining town, music has always been HAAi’s life. Until a few years ago she was vocalist and guitarist in a shoegaze and psyche band, named Dark Bells, and spent many hours listening to weird Thai and Turkish funk, tripped-out psychedelic records, and Nigerian and Kenyan drums. Only more recently has she switched her attention to electronic music, throwing her own Coconut Beats party in Dalston, then a blog, a Rinse FM radio show followed by a Worldwide FM residency of the same name, and now also a regular series of events at Phonox and a record label. She describes electronic music as “a hobby that’s got out of hand.”

Ahead of her performance at this year’s Nuits Sonores 2018, where she’ll be performing alongside Daniel Avery, HAAi offered to compile a studio mix showing off some of her favorite records—a glimpse of the music she’s presenting in her sets. You can now download that mix below, with some information about the processes and tracks available too.

When and where was the mix recorded?

It was recorded in my old home at the RinseFM studios in Shoreditch.

What equipment did you record it on?

Was 2x CDJs and a Pioneer Mixer

Was there a particular idea or mood you were looking to convey?

This mix when I listened back actually reminded me of when I’ve played back to back with Daniel Avery. Perhaps it was in my subconscious.

How did you choose the records you included?

I kind of just went with my gut on this one, to be honest. It’s a mix of older and unreleased tunes as well as some of my own tunes.

What have you got planned for 2018?

Lots and lots of travel and shows! I have an E.P. coming out on my label Coconut Beats at the end of spring that I’m super excited about as well as a bunch of remixes for some of my favourite artists and have an LP in the cannon for later this year which is super weird and kind of cross-pollinates Coconut Beats with my days as a Shoegazer.
Just keep playing and making is the theme this year really.

Contemporary Pianist James Heather Presents Vinyl Release of Stories From Far Away On Piano LP

Contemporary pianist James Heather will soon present Stories From Far Away On Piano, his debut album, on vinyl for the first time, following the album’s August 17 digital release.

Since the release, Heather has been playing live shows ranging from the Greenpeace stage at Glastonbury to the National Concert Hall in Dublin. He was also handpicked by Laura Marling to support at her Brit Awards/War Child gig, whilst other supports have included Jóhann Jóhannsson and Lubomyr Melnyk.

On the surface, Stories From Far Away On Piano‘s solo minimal piano pieces have a simple, innate beauty, but there’s also an intensity simmering within. Heather takes influence from electronic music in structure, ambience, and melody, whilst also utilising a classical and jazz grounding.

The album’s concept meanwhile centres on Heather’s interpretations of real-world stories he read in the news while composing. We’re told that Isis jihadists hijacking the Facebook account of an executed female activist in Syria, the British Empire’s imprisonment of Boers in South African concentration camps, and the undiscovered remains of a disappeared Malaysia Airlines jet in the Indian Ocean were sources of inspiration translated into abstract musical forms.

The black and white album art by Suki features layers of Indian ink bled into newspaper print, repeatedly scanned and treated to interpret the recirculation of information.

Stories From Far Away On Piano will land on vinyl on May 4 via Ahead Of Our Time, with a full stream available below.

Tim Green Lines Up Debut Album, Her Future Ghost

Tim Green will return to Cocoon with a debut album, titled Her Future Ghost.

We’re told that Green composed Her Future Ghost like an electronic soundtrack to a romantic film. “My concept and direction for Her Future Ghost was to write a film score for a film that doesn’t actually exist,” Green says. “As an avid film score fan, I wanted to create a body of work that took certain typical soundtrack traits. For example, different motifs that repeat throughout, like character themes which evolve and mutate as well as a narrative that develops through the music. In my mind, the story is about two people in the future, a couple on another planet so distorted and corrupted in comparison to our world. Essentially they are trying to flee and survive in a society where they have to go to extreme lengths not be caught and put into the same system and society as everyone else on this planet.”

The album concept was further influenced by the work of Ahmed Emad Eldin, an Egyptian digital artist best known for his design on Pink Floyd’s 2014 album The Endless River. Tim reached out personally to the artist, and the two collaborated on the cover art for Her Future Ghost.

Tim made his production debut on four:twenty in 2006, going on to release on Dirtybird and Get Physical, before Cocoon tapped the young producer for his first EP on the label in 2011.

Dual single Echo / They Want Us To Fall Down, the first release from the 11-track LP, drops on April 27 both digitally and on vinyl. The album will then land on May 18. Meanwhile, you can hear clips of the EP tracks via the player below.
