NHK yx Koyxen, real name Kohei Matsunaga, will release a new EP via Zurich-based experimental label -OUS.

Combining a career as a celebrated architect and illustrator in Japan with a 20-year career as a musician, he’s a prolific producer who boats a steady stream of solo releases and numerous collaborations with the likes of Sean Booth from Autechre, Conrad Schnitzler, and Sensation from the Jungle Brothers.

Having recently released an LP on DFA, he’s now set to drop his Parallel Tempo EP for -OUS. We’re told to expect “guttural acid,” with “intricate percussive elements” over the course of nine minutes.

Parallel Tempo EP will be the Japanese artist’s first release on -OUS, and follows releases on Mille Plateaux, PAN, and Diagonal, to name a few.

Tracklisting

A1. Parallel Displacement

L.E.V. Festival 2018 Confirms First Names

Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual (a.k.a L.E.V.) 2018 has revealed the first names for its upcoming 11th edition—including audiovisual live shows, showcases, and workshops.

L.E.V., a project co-produced by the Government of the Principality of Asturias, Gijón’s Town Council, LABoral Centro de Arte, and Datatrón Collective will return to Gijon, Spain from April 26 to 29, featuring a lineup full of daring and innovative international acts that “aim to go beyond classic formats within the fields of sound and vision creations.”

Hiroaki Umeda makes his return to L.E.V to showcase his Intensional Particle performance; while Martin Messier & Yro also come back with their first collaboration: ASHES—designed to remind us that the world’s substance, perceived on a microscopic level, is “nothing but a universe in itself.” After several months of artistic residence in a co-production among Montreal, Paris and Gijón, L.E.V. Festival will host the worldwide premiere of this project.

Creative Italian artist Michela Pelusio will also join the roster with her interpretation of quantum physics in her Spacetime Helix project, a fascinating attempt at visualizing sounds to explore the concept of infinity and the “string theory,” through a set of frequencies and visual and sound geometries.

Another collaboration, in this case between Murcof and Canadian artist Jimmy Lakatos, will bring Nebula, an installation that tries to visualize the most cosmic side of the sound universe of the Mexican artist.

Among the audiovisual live shows, you can find the worldwide premiere of Deeper State, the new audio-visual project of Atom ™; Rabit and Cecile’s take on Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs Du Mal; the new project by innovative British audiovisual creator Zan Lyons; and the audiovisual dreamscapes of Loscil, a further development of the language explored in their most recent albums.

The lineup also includes the particular vision of sci-fi dance music by Zombie Zombie, who will play their new Livity project, while Lusine will also play.

Koenraad Ecker’s New Video is Haunting and Otherworldly

XLR8R Couldn't find the embed function for type: "vimeo" and source: "<iframe width="1170" height="658" src="https://vimeo.com/251614037"></iframe>".

Koenraad Ecker‘s third full-length album, A Biology of Shadows, is set to drop on his own In Aulis on February 23.

The album, which is divided into two parts (Endoscopy and Undergrowth), melds together a haunting concoction of foley recordings, the human voice, spectral resynthesis, and acoustic instrumentation. A Biology of Shadows also features spoken word from Young Echo member and one half of Jabu Alex “Bogues” Rendall, who delivers calm, militant, and introspective phrases over Ecker’s mind-bending sound design.

The album can be pre-ordered here, with

Premiere: Stream an Introspective Cut From Nocow

Late this month, St. Petersburg producer Nocow will release a trilogy of EPs on Len Faki‘s Figure imprint.

The three EPs, titled Vozduh, Voda, and Zemlya, respectively, showcase a hard-to-define sonic aesthetic that touches on gritty techno, IDM, ghetto house, and downtempo electronics. Even with these wide-reaching touchstones, Nocow manages to thread a noticeable sound signature throughout, giving the three EPs a cohesive album-like feel while pushing his sound into the outer reaches of each stylistic cue.

The three EPs are set to drop on February 19 and can be pre-ordered here, with “Hecton’s Lights,” a poignant Boards Of Canada-esque cut, streaming in full below.

Alva Noto Next Up in Ask the Experts; Send Him Your Questions Now

Carsten Nicolai, better known as Alva Noto, is our resident expert for February 2018, meaning he will be answering your questions this month.

Nicolai, born September 18, 1965, is considered one of the most important sound explorers of recent times. A former Architecture student and a visual artist interested in the physical qualities of sound, the German musician is part of an artistic movement whose work explores the intersection between art, science, sound, and music, with a strong adherence to reductionism. Adopting the Alva Noto pseudonym in 2000, he’s worked on many projects, both on his own and with other artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bender (Diamond Version), Bretschneider (Signal), Blixa Bargeld (NBBA), and Ryoji Ikeda (Cyclo), to name a few.

As a musician, capturing the scope of Nicolai’s work is no easy task given his list of releases, exhibitions and more. He co-founded the groundbreaking raster-noton label (having founded NOTON in 1994) just before the turn of the millennium, and has since performed and created installations in some of the world’s most prestigious spaces, including the Guggenheim, New York and London’s Tate Modern.

In terms of releases, he’s shared material via Mille Plateaux and raster-noton. It is here that he has released some of his most defining and widely known work in collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto—with whom he also composed the soundtrack to the 2015 film, The Revenant, which received 12 nominations for the 2016 Oscars. Their latest collaboration, Glass, will land soon; and Nicolai’s latest album, UNIEQAV, will arrive on March 16.

Nicolai also works as a visual artist, known for his elegant yet minimalistic aesthetic. After participation in important international exhibitions like documenta X and the 49th and 50th Venice Biennale, Nicolai’s works have since been shown worldwide in extensive solo and group exhibitions.

Up next, Nicolai will be answering your questions this month. Whether it be playing live, production, label management, or anything else, all questions should be sent to [email protected] with “Alva Noto” as the subject line. We’ll pass them along to Nicolai who will then select his favorites, and soon we’ll publish his answers.

Nate Husser ‘HollyHood’

Nate Husser, formerly Husser, is a Montreal-based rapper who combines raw lo-fi textures with suffering, introspective lyrics. Having cut his teeth playing countless gigs with his band The Posterz, last year he dropped his first solo EP, Geto Rock For The Youth—described as “a vibe, a feel, a genre, a lifestyle, a sound,” by Husser. “The project is heavily influenced by my childhood in the ’90s, growing up with no hip-hop radio station in my city. But still, I had great times and the good vibes and feels I soaked up and that stuck with me from that time are what I wanted to translate thru this project. I’m just doin’ what artists are born to do: creating. Me and the other members of The Posterz—we gotta learn to create in collaboration as well as by ourselves if we ever wanna be near as great as we all can be.” The EP features 7 dark and sonically dense tracks, revealing personal stories through clever wordplay and unique flows.

In support of the release, and ahead of Husser’s performance at this year’s Igloofest, he’s offered up “HollyHood” for download. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button below.

What have you been up to lately? How was 2017 for you?

Been working on a couple of fire projects. Including a mixtape with my Thug Mansion Family and some other new shit by me. 2017 was lit. Felt like a Lil bit of a preview or something. Or a trial run.

What was the inspiration for breaking off as a solo artist?

The inspiration behind breaking off. I’ve always been a solo artist. All artists are. It was just a matter of me getting to put out my work. My sound.

How is the Montreal rap scene treating you?

Montreal treats me well.

Where and when was “HollyHood” recorded? Is there a story behind it?

The first version of “HollyHood” was recorded in my bedroom off a beat Mike Shabb sent me on FB, then the later version at Cult Nation reproduced by Gael Auclair. The inspiration came from the return home from a productive trip to LA where just hours into coming back home to the hood, there was insane heat and it was like I was back in hell.

What’s the basis for your lyrics? Where do the ideas come from?

The basis of my lyrics is basically the truth. Emotion. Authenticity. Storytelling. Flow. Etc. Wtv.

2017 saw you release your latest EP. Can we expect more in 2018?

Of course.

HollyHood

This year’s Igloofest edition runs from January 18 to February 3, with more information here.
