Jimmy Edgar‘s Ultramajic will release a new EP featuring late-’90s electro tracks from an unknown Detroit artist named Ashtar Lavanda.
The story behind is the release is as follows: in 2014, Ultramajic’s Jimmy Edgar received information about an East Detroit storage unit auction containing vintage recording equipment and historical items of Detroit techno descent. “We were only able to take a one-minute peak at the dark and dusty unit before the bid; it was clear there were at least 1000 vinyl records and some miscellaneous recording equipment,” the label explains.
Ultramajic came into the possession of over 100 DAT and 1/4” reel tapes. One box contained meticulously dated tapes from 1995 -1998 with sharpie inscription “ASHTAR LAVANDA.” Having searched online to no avail, the label then sought to identify the producer behind the material and to learn how the music was never released.
After nearly two years, they managed to connect with Ashtar Lavanda, who had made the tapes while sharing lesser-known analog studios that catered to electronic music artists during the late ’90s. Studio time was expensive so the tracks had to be recorded same day. He resides in Detroit to this day and currently works in the medical industry.
“With this release and upcoming archives of his music, he will be known as one of the true pioneers in late ’90s Detroit Electro alongside artists such as AUX88, Ectomorph, Dopplereffekt, and Drexciya,” the label explains.
Hyperdub will soon release the new album of DJ Taye, Still Trippin’.
DJ Taye is a Chicago footwork producer who made his name as one of the youngest artists affiliated with the Teklife crew, joining in 2010. Born in 1994, he began making hip-hop beats and rapping aged 11 and was introduced to the sounds of DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn in 2007. He began producing his own tracks in that style, and eventually racked up several digital releases and mix sessions. His tracks have appeared on Hyperdub’s 2014 compilations Hyperdub 10.1 and Next Life, before the label then released DJ Taye’s debut vinyl EP, Break It Down, in 2015. He returned with the Move Out EP in 2016.
Still Trippin’, a 16-track LP, features guest spots from prominent figures in the footwork scene, including Teklife’s DJ Manny and DJ Paypal. There’s also a cameo from UNiiQU3 and rapper Chuck Inglish, who was part of the Detroit group Cool Kids.

Moogfest has today unveiled a festival lineup led by female, non-binary, and transgender artists, including a keynote conversation with privacy rights and political transparency activist Chelsea Manning on The Future of Creativity. The announcement is celebrated by “Always On,” a 50-hour live stream presented in partnership with Tom Tom Magazine from today at 12:00 pm ET to 2:00 pm ET on December 8, 2017.
Moogfest is the synthesis of music, art, and technology. Since 2004, the event has brought together artists, futurist thinkers, inventors, entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, scientists, and musicians. By day, Moogfest is a platform for conversation and experimentation; by night, Moogfest presents cutting-edge music in venues throughout the city. This conference attracts creative and technology enthusiasts for four days of participatory programming in Durham, North Carolina. Performing artists include early pioneers in electronic music, alongside pop and avant-garde experimentalists of today.
Chelsea Manning’s keynote conversation will explore how technology enables radical disruption in the personal and political spheres, framing the technological future as a new creative landscape. Since its introduction in 2014, the Moogfest keynote has unearthed new perspectives on the future of creativity—tackling questions about how creativity will evolve and what tools will shape creative expression in the future. Manning follows in the footsteps of other groundbreaking thinkers: past Moogfest keynote speakers include transhumanist Dr. Martine Rothblatt, VR pioneer Jaron Lanier, Dr. Kate Shaw from the CERN Large Hadron Collider, Harvard’s Dr. Joe Davis, and philosopher Nick Bostrum.
Rounding out today’s announcement, Moogfest reveals some of the artists who will be participating in the festival’s nighttime program including LCD Soundsystem synth experimentalist Gavin Rayna Russom, gender-ambiguous theremin virtuoso Armen Ra, Kuwaiti conceptual artist Fatima Al Qadiri, Afrofuturist DJ Maliibu Mitch, hyperkinetic pop maven SOPHIE, and the US debut of revered Japanese multi-instrumentalist Midori Takada. Building on the experimental format of previous years, these artists will participate in Future Sound performances by night complemented by the same artists leading Future Thought workshops, and conversations by day.
Today’s announcement is celebrated by “Always On,” a 50-hour livestream with continuous performances from female, transgender, and non-binary artists. Thelive stream highlights the abundance of female, transgender, and non-binary artists actively creating and performing electronic music and beats around the world. The global livestream begins today at 12:00 pm ET and anyone can tune-in for free at http://AlwaysOn.Live. The “Always On” celebration will continue at the festival in May, with some of the artists participating in the livestream also participating at the festival including Sassy Black, Discwoman’s middle eastern dance experimentalist DJ Haram, percussive activist Madame Gandhi, avant pop sound sculptor Katie Gately, multi-instrumentalist provocateur Stud1nt, and former Au Revoir Simone hypnotic synth master Annie Hart. Many of these performances will be part of the free and open-to-the-public programming throughout the festival weekend.
Moogfest 2018 takes place in Durham, NC, from May 17 to 20, 2018, with more information available here. Meanwhile, you can view the current performance lineup below. More names will be added soon.

HHNOI’s music is like an evolving soundtrack, with harmonies and melodies. The album was completely patched and composed on a modular synth. Since there’s no technical possibility to edit or save the music, most of the tracks are more or less unique live recordings, with the modular acting as a canvas for moods and memories being reflected in the moment of patching the tracks.

On December 15, SDB Discos will release AS 10 MAIS BOOGIE vol. 1, an eclectic selection of Brazilian music from the ’80s.
Boogie is a style driven by Moog synths, vocoders, DX7s, and triggered Oberheim drum sounds, with Brazil’s leading components of the genre including Robson Jorge, Lincoln Olivetti, Junior Mendes, Mister Sam, and Sergio Sá. For the retrospective release, SDB Discos has colated a collection of overlooked “compactos” (33 RPM 7″ singles) that either never saw release or sat for years in vaults of radio stations, second hand shops, church basements, and junkyards.
In support of the forthcoming release, SDB Discos has offered up early ’80s rap hit “Break Mandrake,” a very special, highly coveted track, as today’s XLR8R download. To give you an idea of the admiration this record has amongst collectors the world over, an original copy of the record just sold for over $300 on Ebay. It’s a funk-filled ride through drum-machine rhythms, raw synth lines, and inspired sampling that will immediately make you aware of the influence it would have on genres and artists that would follow.
You can grab “Break Mandrake” via WeTransfer below, with the record available for pre-order here.
Nicolas Jaar will release a new deluxe edition of his 2016 LP, Sirens, this Friday via his own Other People label.
Jaar announced the release today via Instagram and Twitter, adding that the new edition will arrive with three new songs (“Wildflowers,” “Coin In Nine Hands,” and “America / I’m For The Birds”) that were recorded during the original album sessions and a re-ordered tracklisting that leaves out the title track.
You can find the new cover and tracklisting below.

The album’s first single “Prayer Hands” was released on October 27, 2017; while “Surgery,” the next single, is out now—and also available for download via the WeTransfer button below.
German trio Wareika will soon release a new album on Mule Musiq, titled Water, Sky, Sun, Wood.
The album consists of one long track made from a four-hour live jam between members Florian Schirmacher and Henrik Raabe using piano, guitar, congas, and a variety of synths. The recording was then edited down by Schirmacher before Raabe added new elements. Final member Jakob Seidensticker mixed the final version.
Wareika previously appeared on the Japanese label with a remix of Jemmy in 2015; while Schirmacher’s project Glowing Glisses dropped an EP on Mule almost 10 years ago. Other material has landed on Visionquest, Perlon, Amphia, and other labels.
