Francisco Lopez ‘Sonic Seeds’ (Subsidence Collective mutation)

The fourth release on Italian label Subsidence will be Francisco López‘ Sonic Seeds, set to arrive on December 14.

Francisco López is an internationally renowned sound artist who, across a forty year career, has crafted a stunning collection of works based on a profound listening of the world. For his latest outing, López has created two effortless sonic journeys from the sound of seeds. The first piece, “untitled#146,” was created by extensive mutation and evolution of a 30-second seed sound fragment provided by Jørgen Larsson, while the second, “untitled#156,” used seed sound sources (eight 3-second fragments) provided by Jorge Haro. The pieces are endlessly evolving conceptual noise compositions that demand the listeners attention.

In support of the release, the label has offered up a new composition created by the Subsidence crew (Retina.it, Matter, Prg/m), which was crafted from the artist’s sound seeds. The haunting nine-minute piece is an exercise in subtly, slowly evolving through a range of dense textures and intricate sounds.

You can grab the exclusive track below, with Sonic Seeds available for pre-order here.

Mitchell Leonard and Animator Haisi Hu Share Beautiful and Introspective Animated Video

Musician Mitchell Leonard and animator Haisi Hu have released “Come Downstairs,” a beautiful song paired with an amazing clay and cell animation.

Mitchell Leonard is a Brooklyn-based pianist, composer, and songwriter. His childhood comprised afternoons at the piano learning Gershwin preludes, and late nights quietly padding out of his room to listen to his father play drums with his jazz combo. He studied jazz and classical composition and performance all throughout his youth. Since then, he has recorded several of his own works, played on countless others, and toured extensively throughout the United States, performing at venues from the Troubadour in Los Angeles to New York’s Webster Hall.

For over twenty years, Haisi Hu has been making and teaching animation. She dedicates her life to preserving and expanding traditional techniques, such as claymation and cell animation.

Come Downstairs, a video by the duo, boasts breathtaking beauty and a myriad of emotions. Led by a piano-jazz ballad and the moving vocals of Mitchell Leonard, the music is brought to life in an ethereal other-world full of mysterious creatures and mirages, designed by Haisi Hu.

The video took over a year to produce, with a number of challenges for the team. “It’s been an intensive, elaborate process, with many technical and conceptual obstacles to overcome,” said Hu. From deadlines to budgetary restrictions and unexpected complications, the process was laborious—involving over 100 pounds of clay, and over 2000 cells of hand-drawn animation.

The music of was recorded in part by Mitchell Leonard’s good friend and songwriting partner John Creasey, who passed away in early 2016; the video is dedicated to him. Leonard shared, “It seemed only right to dedicate this piece to John. He was an extreme believer in the overwhelming power that music has in exploring spirituality. He loved the more mysterious and elusive elements of the art world, those that were the hardest to define with language.”

The single “Come Downstairs” is available for purchase now, with the video streaming above.

SHXCXCHCXSH to Release SSTROM EP

Processed with VSCO with t1 preset

Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH has a new release coming up on their Rösten imprint by SSTROM.

Behind the SSTROM moniker hides one half of SHXCXCHCXSH and a long-time activist of Sweden’s experimental techno scene. Having fallen in love with simple melodies and catchy arpeggios when being a member of bitpop/synth band Slagsmålsklubben, he transferred these sensibilities further into his other projects. SSTROM’s excellent 2016 debut for Semantica Records was an exercise in lush aquatic techno with breezy and lush atmospheres.

The new EP “Vitriol” is informed by the personal experience of the producer, which “adds additional warmth and emotional weight” to the record. The release brings back memories of earth pigments his father used when painting things in their house, the colors created were usually dark toned with some pastel lightness. This juxtaposition is said to be felt throughout the record, which “balances between cinematic futurist moods, steel-wool smoothness, and subtle physicality due to its textured nature.”

The label describes the EP as “carefully crafted introvert music, yet having some elegant dancefloor appeal.”

Tracklisting

A1 / 1. Vitriol
A2 / 2. Sienna
B1 / 3. Umbra
B2 / 4. Ockra

Vitriol EP will land on January 31.

Bernhardt ‘Posture’ (Denham Audio Remix)

Earlier this year, Pitch Rider Records launched with a 10-track compilation of club cuts, titled Inside the Ride, taking in UK bass, techno, grime, footwork, and dubstep.

For their latest outing, the UK label has enlisted Bernhardt, a new moniker of a seasoned artist with a resume that includes some of the biggest labels in the game, a Radio 1 Essential mix, and appearances around the globe. Other than that, the new release arrives with no words; instead, the label lets the uncompromising, hard-hitting techno do the talking.

In support of the release, Pitch Rider has offered up Denham Audio’s remix of EP cut “Posture” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Visible Cloaks Share Video From New Album

Later this week, Visible Cloaks will close out a stellar 2017 with the release of Lex.

The latest from Portland-based musicians Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile represents the next look into Visible Cloaks’ mind-bending sonic excursions, taking the listener on a ride through their warped and disjointed melodies, generative sound design, and avant pop incarnations.

As a precursor to the LP release, RVNG Intl. has released a new video by Brenna Murphy that, like the track, is a hallucinogenic voyage through colorful geometric patterns.

Visible Cloaks’ Lex will be available December 8 in LP and digital formats here.
