Monophona ‘I Will Be Wrong’

Luxembourg’s Monophona have today released a new LP, Girls on Bikes, Boys Who Sing.

Monophona is the project of DJ-producer P. Schirrer (a.k.a Chook) and singer-songwriter Claudine Muno, who team up to create music that’s both electronic and acoustic, equal parts analog and digital, where guitars and pianos meet samples and beats.

This latest album follows 2012’s debut The Spy, featuring break out track, “Give Up,” and also Blackonblack in 2015.

Speaking about Girls On Bikes, Boys Who Sing, Muno explains why fans should expect a newly found political edge to their atmospheric sound:

“With everything that happened in the world these last two years, it seemed impossible to write only about personal matters and shut out world events. When we were young, we didn’t think that the world in the 21st century would be like this—we thought it might be freer, more tolerant. Many people still have to fight for the most basic human rights, like to ride a bike if they want to, to sing about whatever is on their mind. This is why the new album is angrier than its predecessors.”

Completing the dynamic line up is percussionist Jorsch Kass.

Marking today’s release, album cut “I Will Be Wrong” can be downloaded via the WeTransfer button below.

Premiere: Stream a Cut from Scuba’s Return as SCB

Scuba‘s SCB project returns today with Below the Line, a new EP on Hotflush Recordings.

The British producer has become one of modern dance music’s most pioneering figures, having produced four full-length albums, various EPs and contributed mix albums to renowned series such as DJ Kicks, Fabric, and for Berghain‘s Ostgut Ton label over the last decade. Donning the SCB name in 2010, Paul Rose’s pseudonym for esoteric techno found a home on labels like Aus, Nonplus, and Hotflush Recordings, not to mention its own eponymous imprint.

Featuring artwork by Jonathan Lawrence, Below The Line inaugurates a fictional timeline of events set in a hypothetical future. A climate-related disaster acts as a catalyst for a complete overturn in society, the repercussions of which will be explored subsequently.

“Like many people, I’ve spent a lot of time this year thinking about the paths we could be headed down over the next few decades, many of which seem to point to catastrophic scenarios in society and the environment which were unthinkable until very recently. One of the things that interests me the most is considering the journey of consciousness that leads people down paths which subvert their own previously held political morality. Musically, this has been a slightly different way of working for me, but it’s also been one of the few positive ways I’ve found to channel my attempts to make sense of our recent past and possible future.’ — Paul Rose

Tracklisting:

A1. Five Degrees
A2. Opposition Division

B2. The Cut

Below The Line EP drops on Hotflush Recordings today, with “Five Degrees” streaming in full below.

Shore ‘Components’

Last month, Will Shore released his debut solo EP, A hundred times, via Mister Saturday Night.

A hundred times follows Shore’s collaborations with Tmboy and Kinematics, and seamlessly blends the dreamy pop of the former with the mesmerizing grooves of the later. The three tracks on the EP masterfully balance Shore’s stunning instrumentation with club sensibilities for an EP of mind-bending brilliance. The music landing on Mister Saturday Night is a direct reflection of that musically brilliance, as the label explains:

“We met him through the NYC music institution Nublu, where he worked with the legendary jazz maestro Butch Morris as well as Sex Mob and Tom Waits drummer Kenny Wollesen. At the very first Planetarium listening session, where records blend into live performances for people sprawled on the floor of a loft for six hours, one of our friends leaned over and asked, “What is this record? It’s amazing.” It wasn’t a record. It was Shore, playing “A hundred times” in the corner of the room.”

You can pick up the full EP here, with b-side cut “Components” available via WeTransfer below.

Splice and iZotope Offer Rent-to-Own Plugins

Earlier this month, Splice announced a partnership with iZotope that would allow users to rent-to-own brand new versions of iZotope’s critically-acclaimed mixing and mastering plugins Ozone 8 and Neutron 2.

The partnership will mark the first time that Ozone 8 and Neutron 2 have been available for both direct purchase from iZotope and through rent-to-own on Splice, giving producers instant access to a plugin to then pay off over time in small monthly installments—users can also pause or cancel their plans at any time and try the plugins for free for three days.

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Drop Patrick Cowley LP, Share Video

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up to release the final volume of gay porn soundtracks by San Francisco-based musician and producer Patrick Cowley, out today on what would have been Cowley’s 67th birthday.

Ttitled Afternooners, the LP features 70 minutes of music that will land on vinyl for the first time. The tracks have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA, and the LP will be housed in a gatefold jacket designed by Berlin-based artist Gwenael Rattke, with black and white photos of Patrick in his studio and full-color x-rated scenes from the Fox Studio vaults. The album will also include a fold-out poster of a handmade collage of photos and xeroxed graphics and an essay from Drew Daniel of Matmos.

Alongside the release, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem have shared a video of cut together scenes from various Cowley soundtracked films, as they explain:

“One sizzling, hot afternoon of graphic, detailed, man-to-man action. All footage all comes from the movie Afternooners originally released on VHS by Fox Studio of Los Angeles. Directed by John Coletti, who added Patrick Cowley’s music to each scene. This clip features scenes from “One Hot Afternoon” with Bo Richards and Dean Heddon kissing out on a couch before we cut to “The Runner, Part 1” with Chris Rutherford standing in front of his open bedroom window and slowing pulling on his underwear joined by Beau Matthews and ending on “Cycle Tuff,” Jimmy Metz’s first solo film.”

You can watch the video in the player above, with the LP available here.

Hi-Five: Ellen Allien

Ellen Allien witnessed it all. Returning from London, the German native experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall and then all that came after—first working behind the bar and at the decks at Fischlabor Club, then becoming a resident DJ at the Bunker, Tresor, and E-Werk around 1992. She also launched her own radio show on Kiss FM entitled Braincandy and then began organizing parties with the name Pitch Control—all before starting the BPitch Control label in 1999.

She remains an enduring symbol of Berlin’s electronic music scene and maintains a tremendously busy touring schedule; while her releases are showing few signs of slowing down. But today, as part of our Hi-Five series, she looks back at those reunification years in the German capital to pick out five tracks that remind her of those experiences at the legendary Tresor club.

3phase feat. Dr. Motte “Klang der Familie” [Tresor / Transmat; 1992]

This is one of the biggest Berlin hits from the early rave days and it was the ultimate hymn of Tresor and Globus! It has been played a million times, and I’m still getting goosebumps when someone drops it.

If you see one of the documentaries that came up in the last years about the early years, you can be sure this track will be featured. And the title says it all: “The sound of the family.”

Joey Beltram “Energy Flash” [Transmat; 1992]

” width=”560″ height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>

The bomb forever, I still play it and can’t stop listening to this track!

Tresor was the first and only club that created the Berlin/Detroit axis. They flew in all the guys and made it possible for us to see our new heroes live.

Joey Beltram was always a wonderful experience to hear at Tresor. He’s still playing there from time to time; if you can you should definitely try to experience a set from him there.

Blake Baxter “One More Time” [Logic Records; 1992]

” width=”100%” height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>

Blake Baxter did many shows at Tresor/ Globus and played all these sexy tunes that made us freak out.

Ellen Allien “Get The Groove Goin” [Championsound; 1995]

” width=”100%” height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>

My first EP and I played it up and down, almost every Sunday when we did the after-hour at Globus! We had this Sunday there for a few years. Me and Tanith. We called it “Club The Rest” and it went until Monday morning for everybody who just didn’t want to go home those days. We were all young and the scene was new and in the beginning, so of course, nobody wanted to stop. We’ve spent so many hours in clubs! And we had wonderful times there.

To do this Sunday to Monday party with Tanith was just amazing because he gave me total freedom to do what I wanted to do. He never tried to influence me or anything; we just shared the night and played hour by hour.

We’ve started doing “Club The Rest” again a few times a year now. And every time there are many faces from the early days mixed with the clubbers from today.

Jeff Mills “Phase 4” [Tresor; 1992]

” width=”100%” height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=”allowfullscreen”>

Jefffffff—the King of Tresor! I mean, we all know him and he’s definitely the artist that has the strongest connection to Tresor, for me. Maybe because of all the records he did on the label, but also all the gigs he did there.

I’ll never forget how magical it was to see him playing the first time. So fast and concentrated. I didn’t even know where to look. He’s a very special being—a real wizard.

Ellen Allien will be performing tonight at the Tresor / BPitch night in Amsterdam alongside DJ Stingray, K-Hand, Objekt, and more. More information here.

Tulum’s Comunité Festival Announces 2018 Lineup

Tulum’s Comunité Festival has announced plans for next year’s 2018 edition.

The festival will return to a new location in Tulum for its third edition. This year the encounter will take place in a jungle ranch—a Caribbean “heaven” with three cenotes—artistically intervened underground water caves. One of them will be the Moon stage within a mystical cave, while the second cave, the Lunar stage, promises an audiovisual/immersive sensitive experience. The third one will be an open-air area for the Solar Stage. It’s described by organizers as an “amazing paradise.”

For the lineup, this year Comunité focuses on a program based on alternative currents and the re-invention of traditional music forms. James Holden & The Animal Spirits team up for a new project which will have its Mexican debut for this special occasion. Neo-soul singer Dayme Arocena, Trax RecordsMystic Bill, and Alpha 606 represent the Cuban artist community at Comunité.

Murcof, a titan of the Mexican experimental scene, will play a special set; while Nicola Cruz will do the Neo-Andean fever. This first stage of the lineup is completed by diverse artists such as Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (Live), Romare (Live), Steve O’Sullivan, Auntie Flo, Kuniyuki (Live), Rhadoo, Kalabrese, and more. More performances and guests will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Once again, Comunité is teaming up with Restore Coral, a local initiative which last year helped to re-plant the coral reefs that are so vital in the fight against climate change. In addition to this ecological-driven effort, the festival addresses Mexico’s current emergency state around the devastating earthquake that happened in September by donating a percentage of the ticket sales to initiatives which provide housing to affected families in many states of central Mexico.
