HNQO ‘Light a Cigarette’

Henrique Oliveira (a.k.a HNQO), is one of the rising talents in the techno, house and indie dance scene in Brazil. Having released a recent EP on DOC Records, he will now introduce his first album The Old Door.

Rødhåd Shares Full Album Stream

Rødhåd will soon release his long-awaited debut LP, Anxious, via Dystopian.

Rødhåd, real name Mike Bierbach, is the spearhead of a generation of techno producers and DJs. Growing up in Berlin’s rougher outskirts, as a teenager he was able to grasp the final flashings of Berlin’s mythical nightlife of the 1990s at legendary places Casino and Ostgut. In the late 2000s, the Dystopian crew began their own series of parties and then the label with two seminal releases by Rødhåd, 1984 and Blindness. Since then, he’s released several more EPs and moved to a more ambient sound.

Anxious sees the artist further “step away from the dancefloor and further develop the narrative qualities of his beautiful soundscapes,” the label explains. It was the natural next step to present the sound he began cultivating with his recent EPs Kinder der Ringwelt and Söhne der Erde as a full-length LP. The experience the album is trying to convey is being thrown into a world that is “ready to crush you,” the label adds. “They have you with your back to the wall, and you are ready to give way to despair. Will you be able fight back? How is it even possible?”

Roe Deers & Curses ‘Fade Away Dub’

The latest release on La Belle Records will arrive from Lithuanian-based audio-visual duo Roe Deers and Ombra Intl. label head Curses.

Both the Curses and Roe Deers projects have been at the forefront of a scene that focuses on a thrilling fusion of rock and roll, post-punk, wave, italo, and electronic dance music. The new release, titled Fade Away, is, according to Curses, “an anthem against prejudice, as it’s time we all fade into one and get lost together in the party.” The music on the release is no frills machine music, raw cuts of punk intensity.

In support of the release—which dropped on October 6 and can be grabbed here—Roe Deers and Curses have offered up a bonus dub edit of lead cut, “Fade Away,” available via WeTransfer below.

Podcast 512: Tomoki Tamura

Although Tomoki Tamura‘s journey with dance music began in his native Japan, it was a move to London in 2004 that acted as the catalyst for the launch of a series of Holic nights that quickly rose to become London staples. The reputation of the Holic nights landed Tamura regular slots at London venues such as Fabric, Ministry of Sound, and Plastic People, a residency at the legendary club The End, and back in Japan at one of the country’s most respected clubs Womb.

Almost a decade later, Holic naturally morphed into Holic Trax, kicking off with an EP from none other than house music royalty Mr. G in 2012. With G’s Danceholic’s EP as a launching pad, Holic Trax would go on to release standout house outings from some of the scene’s most exciting artists, including Rick Wade, Burnski, Chris Carrier, Ekkohaus & Rufus, Kate Simko, Robert Dietz, and Tuccillo, whom Tamura also produces alongside as Doublet.

Tamura’s own productions, too, are extensions of the sound and ethos he has built with Holic. Outside of his own label, in the last few years, Tamura’s raw, groove-led take on house has landed on 89:GHOST and Unblock, but other than those two releases (Retro City and Quiet Air Gun, respectively), Tamura has kept his music close to home.

Even though he’s proved to be an accomplished producer, Tamura is a DJ and curator first and foremost; and that’s what we get to bare witness to on his XLR8R podcast: a well-paced hour of swinging grooves and velvety deep house.

When and where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded on a recent weekday in my home DJ booth in Berlin.

What equipment did you record the mix on?

Two Technics, two CDJ’s, and my old Pioneer mixer, which I bought long time ago.

Was there a particular idea or mood you were looking to convey?

I wanted to do a mix of the house music that I think is good for both home listening and dancing. It might be perfect for a small house party (I mean party at home).

How does it differ from a regular club set?

It less funky, nasty, dirty than a regular club set

To you, what makes for a Holic Trax release?

House music full of passion, soul, and funk. I appreciate all the artists who released with us the past five years and the people who have supported us.

Now I am excited for another 5 years.

What else do you have coming up this year?

Keeping busy DJing and in the studio, and also the planning of new Holic Trax and Doublet releases in 2018.

We have just released a 3 x 12″ package for 5iVE YEARS HOLIC TRAX (Mr.G / Satoshi Tomiie & Tuccillo / Tomoki Tamura), so no more releases in 2017.

Uninc & Kolomensky ‘Doormos’

Next up on Hell Yeah is another fine transmission from Russia in the form of a Uninc & Kolomensky EP.

Kolomensky just released an EP on UK label Clandestino, has been remixed by Hell Yeah’s Balearic Gabba Sound System as well as Felix Dickinson, and has had his tunes played by Andrew Weatherall and Leo Mas. Here he links with partner in crime Uninc and together they have a big arsenal of fat tunes that are wild in tempo, sample-based, sprinkled with acid and set to get any party started. The upcoming Svadba EP is the first batch of four of them.

Downloadable below is “Doormos,” a smooth and Balearic cut with drifting trumpets bringing a beach vibe to the classic vocal samples. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button.

Sampa The Great Announces New Mixtape

Sampa The Great will release a new mixtape via Big Dada, titled Birds And The BEE9.

Sampa is a singer, poet, lyricist, and songwriter born in Zambia, raised in Botswana, and based currently in Melbourne. She makes deeply political and personal music.

Birds And The BEE9 arrives after a mixtape and series of EPs and singles which have attracted an increasing swell of support in Australia and beyond. Meeting through a freestyle night, it was with producer Dave Rodriguez (Godriguez) that she made 2015’s The Great Mixtape. She linked up with Godriguez again for the “Blue Boss” single, followed by 2016’s “Heroes Act 2” which she worked on with Estelle and Rahki as part of a project with Red Bull Sound Select.

A trio of different producers have helped her realize her vision for BBEE9. First up, there’s Kwes Darko who’s put out his own LPs for Black Acre and R&S. There’s Justin Smith (a.k.a Sensible J), who is the producer and drummer for Melbourne’s much-touted REMI. And finally, there’s Alejandro ‘JJ’ Abapo (a.k.a Silentjay), another Melbourne-based producer who’s put out in-demand EPs for Rhythm Section and been in the band for Australian trailblazers Hiatus Kaiyote.

We’re told to expect a mixtape that “showcases the qualities that were already evident in those first releases.”

Max Cooper Lines Up New EP

Max Cooper is set to return with another release exploring the intersection of science, music, and art.

The World Passing By EP features four new tracks accompanied by a visual representation of his conceptually driven work.

For this project, Max was influenced by varying interpretations of time. On the inspiration behind the EP he says: ‘’I wondered if our experience of time could be explained…where time is just a physical dimension into which things grow, with us experiencing now as the cusp of the inflation.”

The visual and musical ideas both stemmed from train journeys and were then run through studio hardware to form each track, as well as a collaboration with Kevin McGloughlin to create a video representation of his work that will feature in Max’
live show.

The EP will land on Mesh, Max’ new label, founded last year.

Tracklisting:

01. Veil Of Time
02. Resynthesis
03. Stacked Moments
04. Corporea

World Passing By EP is scheduled for November 24 release, with “Stacked Moments” streaming in full below.

Carly Foxx ‘We Feel, We Move’ (Demuir’s Playboy Edit)

For his latest outing, Toronto’s Demuir has teamed up with Carly Foxx, a DJ, producer and owner of London label Love Story Recordings to rework Foxx’s unreleased track “We Feel, We Move.”

The alluring edit follows a string of outings released on Luke Solomun and Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, a full-length album TruSkool on DJ Sneak’s Magnetic Recordings, and, most recently, a collaborative EP with Cassy on her newly launched label, Kwench Records.

On the edit, Demuir chops Foxx’s vocals and refits the track with a jackin house groove aimed squarely at the floor. You can download the track via WeTransfer below.
