Premiere: Hear a Tense New Cut From Phase Fatale

On October 13, Hayden Payne (a.k.a. Phase Fatale) will release his debut album, Redeemer, on Hospital Productions.

The LP follows a sole 2017 release on Unterton and two acclaimed 2016 EPs on Jealous God. Redeemer follows in the lineage of these EPs, with seven stark and tense cuts of punk-infused techno. The music is immediate and muscular but not without emotive undertones, brought into the fold by way of subtle guitar lines and vocals to create what Payne has described as a deeply “personal piece.”

In support of the forthcoming release, Payne has offered up a full stream of “Human Shield,” available via the player below.

Trentemøller Shares Documentary Video

Exactly one year after the release of his fourth album FixionTrentemøller has shared a full, hour-long music documentary by Thomas Jessen, Julie Runa, and Kristian Pedersen.

Starting with impressions from the show in Berlin’s Olympic Stadion from 2013, when Trentemøller opened for Depeche Mode, the film covers a period of more than four years and offers lots of intimate insights in Trentemøller’s work.

Originally produced by Thomas Jessen and Julie Runa and broadcasted in three parts on Danish National TV “DR,” the film has been re-edited by Kristian Pedersen into an entertaining movie which is now streaming in full above.

The film accompanies the Danish musician and producer from the first steps towards the new album, when for example he acquires new studio equipment, gives intimate insights into his studio work or live-rehearsals for the Fixion tour.

You’ll also see live concerts, interviews with Anders and his band members, a fascinating look into his work with Jehnny Beth and Marie Fisker as well as a lot of behind the scenes material.

Dooley Silverspoon ‘Mr Deluxe (Part I + Part II)’ (Bill Brewster Edit)

“Everything I do now started with record collecting. It’s the foundation of my career; from writing about music, DJing in clubs, putting compilations together or spending many late-night hours, glass of red wine in hand, bidding on stupid records on eBay.” – Bill Brewster

Spanning 41 tracks, Tribal Rites is a musical autobiography of sorts from one of dance music’s most dedicated historians, Bill Brewster. Released this November on three CDs and double vinyl via Belgium’s Eskimo Recordings, the compilation takes us on a personal journey through Bill’s 36-year involvement in the music industry.

Whether running DMC’s New York offices or labels including Twisted UK and Forensic, being one of Fabric’s original residents, writing (with Frank Broughton) probably the definitive overview of DJ culture, the seminal “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” and the equally essential “How To DJ (Properly),” running the DJhistory website or promoting their much loved Low Life parties, Bill’s fingerprints can be found all over dance music’s past few decades.

Split into three sections, the compilation begins in the post-punk period, and through tracks such as explores the influence of dub on bands of the time. The second section takes us into that mish-mash of sounds and styles best described as “Balearic,” while the final section then concentrates exclusively on house music, though again showcasing just what a broad church house is.

Bill Brewster Presents Tribal Rites is scheduled for November 3 release, with Dooley Silverspoon’s “Mr Deluxe (Part I + Part II)” (Bill Brewster Edit) exclusively available for download via the WeTransfer button below.

Watch Ballantine’s x Boiler Room ‘The Future of Sound’ Panel

As announced, Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music recently touched down in Warsaw for True Music Poland, the third leg of the latest multi-city tour and the 18th show of their partnership.

This finale featured the second True Music Forum, the coming together of some of the music industry’s leading figures to discuss the evolution of music, culture, and nightlife in 2017—and comprised four live-streamed panel discussions, plus an intimate “In Conversation With” interview with Seth Troxler.

XLR8R streamed the third panel, the topic being “The Future of Sound.”

New creative playing fields were ignited with the democratization of music software, birthing new globally connected networks of bedroom producers. In more recent times, there’s been renewed innovation in hardware with experimental laboratories and incubators like Abbey Road Red and Music Hackspace at the center. This conversation brought together those at the vanguard of sonic exploration to ponder what the most long-lasting new technologies may be and also he consequences on production and consumption.

The following people were speaking:

Peter Kirn (Host)

Peter Kirn is a composer/musician, media artist, educator, technology writer, and the creator and editor of Create Digital Music.

Xosar (Producer)

American-born, Berlin-based producer Xosar’s sound is a mix of unnerving atmospheres, keenly bolted onto raw techno tempos and haunting dark grooves. Xosar has released on well-respected labels L.I.E.S., Opal Tapes as well as her own Gyrocyre. Her live set is an accomplished, laptop-free one: taking in multiple drum machines, sequencer-samplers, and effects.

Chagall (Producer and UX Designer)

Chagall is an Amsterdam-born, London-based electronic music producer, songwriter, and vocalist. She has been a part of the core development team and mi.mu’s wearable system since 2014 which now forms the technical centerpiece of her shows. In 2017 she worked with a team of artists to explore the interaction between music, technology, choreography, visual design and lights to develop an immersive live performance called “Calibration,” to be toured through the UK and Europe in 2017/2018.

HRTL (Producer)

HRTL is a Czech producer who had been performing live with various sets of vintage and modular gear since 2013.

Nadine Raihani (Native Instruments)

Nadine is the Lead Product Specialist at Native Instruments, a highly-respected manufacturer of software and hardware for computer-based audio production and DJing, based in Berlin. She’s an expert in audio production as well as performing as a musician.

Levon Vincent Offers New Album for Free Download

Levon Vincent‘s has shared a free download of his second LP, For Paris.

The Berlin-based US-native announced the LP, For Paris, via his Facebook page last month, along with a lengthy statement about the story behind it. The announcement draws reference to his controversial Facebook post where he suggested that people arm themselves with knives or mace in the wake of the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. The post attracted widespread criticism across social media.

The album is out now out digitally, available to download free via this link, with the playlist streaming above.

The vinyl will be released in five parts, starting in January 2018 with a vinyl dropping every month after that.

Blawan Remixes Lucy

Berlin-based Zehnin keeps up a fine release schedule by asking Blawan to remix its inaugural EP from Lucy.

Blawan has been in his own sound world for years now. Releasing on the likes of Hessle Audio, Hinge Finger, and his own Ternesc, he’s made brutalist, heavily textured tracks, big room tools, and dark grooves with freaky sound design. It’s all helped to make him one of the most interesting producers of the day, and here he shows another side to his sound.

First up is his version of “The Hermit,” which is seven spacious and mysterious minutes of creeping pads and implicit rhythms. Dark but inviting, it’s stripped back, hollowed out techno that manages to be hugely absorbing and menacing without any clearly defined drums.

On the flip is the equally beguiling “The High Priestess.” Deep, subliminal kicks set the tone with groaning riffs, train-track percussion and distant, tortured pads.

Tracklisting

A / 1. The Hermit (Blawan Remix)
B / 2. The High Priestess (Blawan Remix)

The Hermit / The High Priestess (Blawan Remixes) EP is scheduled for November 17 release, with clips streaming below.

Perm ‘IV’

At the start of this month, Perm dropped his latest EP, shtum 014, via shtum.

The four-track release follows 2017 outings from Inga Mauer and Lockertmatik with a set of dizzying cuts that sit perfectly in the nether region between house and techno. Across the four tracks, Perm displays his deft hand for crafting tripped-out melodies, backed by perfectly executed grooves, that will hypnotize dancers.

shtum 014 is available now on vinyl and digitally, and in support of the release, Perm has offered up EP cut “IV” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.
