Premiere: Stream Samanta Fox & Oliver Klostermann’s Renate Contribution

Berlin’s Renate is currently celebrating its 10-year birthday with a three-day party.

In addition to this, Renate will also press a limited edition anniversary compilation LP, featuring tracks from the creative might of its residents, all of whom have been called on to “present the sound of Renate.”

The first EP hosts a track from Peak & Swift, the colorful duo that inadvertently became the face of Renate today. Sebastian Voigt, the dark techno horse of the Renate tribe, adds a little mystic depth to the A-side. Samanta Fox & Oliver Klostermann bring their own brand of cosmic waves to the release while Johannes Albert, the wunderkind who broke free of Berlin’s shackles, shows us his own definition of trance.

Samanta Fox & Oliver Klostermann’s cut, which is streamable below, is the more chilled track of the EP. It brings a downtempo beat to the synthy sounds of new wave youth. Hear it now before the EP’s September 21 release.

Jonny Oso ‘Food Bank’

At the start of this month, Pastel Voids released Jonny Oso‘s Mind/Body/Science LP.

The album drops as a part of Pastel Voids’ collection of September 2017 releases, which has included Santiago Salazar’s Aspirations For Young Xol, Metropol x (703) 863-4357’s A Void With The Value Of Gold, Tendril’s First Strike, and Terrance’s God’s Country.

Oso’s album features eight cuts that anchor themselves in the rave era, with bass-heavy, dreamy jungle sitting next to breaks-influenced house and warped disco-tinged beats. The wild, sprawling album also arrives with a call-to-action:

“Baby J reminds you to please enjoy these trax irresponsibly, in the company of good friends, and on a nice sound system for that low low end and crisp clap in the ears. And if you wanna fly away, best believe you gotta go get it!”

In support of the release, Oso and Pastel Voids have offered up the album’s closing cut—which, besides this download, is a vinyl-only offering—”Food Bank,” a floaty, feel-good outing, as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

You can grab the full album here.

Premiere: Hear a Haunting Cut From Benedikt Frey’s Debut Album

Benedikt Frey‘s debut LP will drop on October 6 via Lovefingers‘ LA-based ESP Institute.

The album, which was produced over the course of two years, follows a string of standout EPs for labels such as Live At Robert Johnson, Crème Organization, and Hivern Discs, and like much of his output—and ESP Institute’s, for that matter—it’s a borderless fusion of mind-bending sonics. Although the 11 tracks don’t adhere to one formula or style, the album’s narrative unfolds as a coherent-yet-complex whole, dragging the listener through haunting atmospheres and stirring electronics that touch on post-punk, techno, trip-hop, and new wave, all the while sounding like a genre of its own.

Ahead of the release—you can pre-order it here—Frey and ESP Institute have offered up a full stream of “Private Crimes,” available to stream via the player below.

Pharaohs ‘Oelan Gunda’

Pharaohs have released a new album through International Feel.

In Oeland is the Los Angeles-based group’s second LP, and their first record since 2015.

The band is made up of Ale Cohen, Samuel Cooper, Stellar Rahim and Diego Herrera. Sam met co-founder Ale Cohen in Amoeba Music and the pair, who each play guitars and synths, started jamming in 2007/08. Two more members were added. Diego Herrera, who also records as Suzanne Kraft, was an original member and although his relocation now prevents him from joining the regular jams, some of his playing can be heard on this album, notably its first track “Muddy Middle of Nowehere.” The fourth member, Casey Butler (a.k.a Stellar Rahim), studied composition at CalArts where his mentor and teacher was renowned avant-garde and free jazz trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith. He is also a member of the CalArts Gamelan Orchestra.

The album was inspired by the writings of journalist Michael Kew. “While we were working on this record I was reading a book “Crossings” by surfer journalist Michael Kew,” says Sam Cooper. “A lot of the music was inspired by his travels in the South Pacific, his imagery, the way he talked about places and how there were still undiscovered places in the world. I was immersing myself in this tropical island world. I guess this is my idea of what I’d want to hear if I was out there.”

The record is the latest in International Feel’s mini-LP series focusing on the “space somewhere between worldbeat, Balearic, and library music.” Following releases in the series by Len Leise, CFCF, Shelter, Wolf Muller & Cass, In Oeland offers “a mature and heady mix of diverse influences that displays the furthest extents of Pharaohs musical adventuring to date,” the label adds.

Machinedrum Drops New Single

Photo: Andrew Defrancesco

Machinedrum (a.k.a Travis Stewart) has dropped a new track, “1 2 B Needed” feat. Roses Gabor.

The cut, released yesterday, landed on Ninja Tune and is the US producer’s third release this year, after last year’s Human Energy LP which brought him critical acclaim.

“‘1 2 B Needed” continues the sonic discovery and evolution of the Human Energy sound,” Travis Explains. “It’s a “cute banger” meant to uplift and melt faces simultaneously.”

Following on from his last single “What Is This” ft Rosie Lowe, which took on a slower and sleeker tone than the previous “U Betta” single, “1 2 B Needed” feat. Roses Gabor picks up the pace. With his signature synthy chopped up 100 mph beats “1 2 B Needed” demonstrates what Travis does best: mix a blend of underground electronic and pop sensibilities.

“1 2 B Needed” feat. Roses Gabor is out now via Ninja Tune, and streaming in full above.

Natalie Beridze, who has been performing worldwide since 2004, is known as the first female electronic music artist in Georgia; Rezo Glonti has built his studio inside the hull of his boat, and Zesknel is a resident of the renowned Bassiani club; while MIY and Severiane were discovered thanks to Myspace, Soundcloud, and word-of-mouth.

Label head Irakli, who was born in Tbilisi and has immersed himself in electronic music, also contributes “Forgotten Melodies,” a beautiful ambient cut that can be downloaded via the WeTranfer button below ahead of the compilation’s September 21 release.
