Premiere: Hear a New Cut From Tolga Fidan

Tolga Fidan‘s latest EP, Lone, will drop on Vakant on September 18.

Lone marks Fidan’s solo return to Vakant, following on from his 2012 album, Rogue, and a string of 2017 releases on Yay Recordings, Redpanda, and TFR. On the EP, Fidan keeps this year’s roll going with three slices of pure machine funk, backed by a remix from Convextion—Convextion’s remix, however, is a vinyl-only offering.

You can pre-order Lone on vinyl or digitally from Vakant’s Bandcamp page, with the tripped-out title track streaming in full via the player below.

Download One Hour of Boska

Boska started producing sparse UK-influenced house in Norway’s infamous techno capital Tromsø before being taken out of the music studies and into the city’s night clubs by local DJs and promoters. His style has progressed through a number of releases on Love OD Communications, Studio Barnhus, and Permanent Vacation, and recently into its most bare bones iteration on Trax Couture. He’s also known for his collaborations with Charlotte Bendiks and Fiordmoss. His music balances intuition and inventiveness, channelling ghetto house, ballroom, grime through the time scope of techno. He is also part of SHAPE, a platform to support emerging artists.

This year he’ll be performing at TodayArt Festival taking place from September 22 – 23 in The Hague, Netherlands. On the lineup this year are LegoweltLaurel HaloMarie Davidson, Ron Morelli, and many more. More information is available here.

When and where was the mix recorded?

I’m at home in Berlin, recorded the mix this morning.

Could you tell us about the idea behind it?

I wanted to try something different, so I threw all of the tracks into my live setup. Obviously, it was a bit awkward since I’ve never DJ’d with ableton before, but I had a lot of fun using the instruments with the tracks. New experiences always have a freshness to them.

How did you choose the records in it?

I knew that I wanted to put the Reniss track and the rRoxymore remix in there, since those are recent musical crushes, so that’s where I built it from. I’m really always looking for tracks with strong musical or sonic ideas, a deep atmosphere I can get lost in, or just some great drums. Trying to walk the tightrope of making it artistically interesting without losing the groove that gives it value as dance music in the first place.

How does the mix compare to one of your live sets?

The obvious difference between a live set and playing tracks is the amount of sonic detail and variation — the live improvised stuff tends to have a more raw energy to it, less planned. I really love how that simplicity sounds on a big system though. A mix like this one is a listening experience, put together by complex and carefully planned productions.

What have you got planned for the rest 2017?

This month we’re doing a couple more live shows with Charlotte Bendiks at festivals, and my own live set at TodaysArt in the Hague and Insomnia in Tromsø. My band Fiordmoss is releasing its debut album on October 12th, and touring a lot after that, which will be great. After that I’ll probably spend some time in the studio with my own tracks as well, preparing a release for next year.

AYBEE & Lars Bartkuhn Ready The Astral Walkers EP

Oakland’s AYBEE returns to his Deepblak label for the first time since last year’s LP, The Odyssey.

The Passage EP sees the Berlin-based artist collaborate with Frankfurt’s Lars Bartkuhn for the first time as The Astral Walkers. Bartkuhn is best known for his work with his iconic Needs Music imprint, where he has won an ardent following for his blending of contemporary electronic sounds with jazz, classical, and funk.

The Astral Walkers collaboration was born out of an impromptu jam performance at the Xjazz Festival in 2015, where the seeds were planted for further collaboration. Both worked in tandem on drum programming, vocals, and synths, with Bartkuhn also contributing guitar, piano, rhodes, and live percussion in addition to enlisting the jazz/ rock bassist Helmuth Fass on bass. The resulting pair of tracks “seek to capture the spirit of the dance, the fearless freedom of the jazzfunk era and the endless possibilities within electronic music,” the label explains.

LOVERS Up Next on Let’s Play House

The next release on Let’s Play House will arrive from LOVERS.

The EP, titled Grand St Blues, follows and was inspired by LOVERS’ move from London to New York and was mostly produced using an MPC and vinyl rips from records he discovered in the first year following the move. The EP and the music also tells a story of a relationship blooming, ending, recovering, and starting again.

The full six-track EP drops at the end of the month and can be pre-ordered digitally here and on vinyl here, with “Fool Moon” and “Sweetest Thing (Interlude)” streaming below.

Eluize ‘Make Me Sin (Dub)’

A year after Eluize’s debut release on Night Tide, the label has invited friends Ena Cosovic, Panorama Channel, and Gratts & NIBC to re-imagine a selection of her tracks.

Eluize is an Australian-born DJ, producer, and vocalist. She draws inspiration from all corners of the globe and has a passion for combining the music she uncovers and creates to shape soundtracks for all hours on the dancefloor.

In May 2016, she launched her Night Tide that stands for deep melodic electronic music, beauty in sound, and collaborations between sonic and visual artists from around the world. The debut release on Night Tide, Talk In Technicolour’ heralds originals from Eluize, remixes from Hans Berg and SETH NK and a spoken word piece. The EP ranges from dubby and spacious deep house to techno, using a unique blend of pristine vocals, orchestral instruments, drum machines and synths.

2017 saw Eluize drop her second solo EP For the Forgetful on Night Tide in June, as well as an EP of remixes and unreleased jams Technicolour Shift in October.

On this remix package, Eluize adds her piece to the pack, unveiling a secret track made especially for the cassette release. “Never Think Before You Begin” is an ambient affair, slowed down and intimate, built from twisted vocal elements and layered piano punctuated with grainy percussive hits. The label founder also reworked “Make Me Sin” into a dub of sorts, stripping out the vocals to make space for the beautifully performed keys, uplifting arps, and rippling leads to take centre stage.

02. Make Me Sin (Panorama Channel Remix)

Henning Baer Announces Debut Album

Henning Baer has announced his debut album, Shatterproof.

As the head of Grounded Theory and MANHIGH, Henning Baer has since 2009 presented his downcast, experimental interpretation of modern electronic music to wide acclaim, establishing a presence in Berlin’s scene with curatorial skills and DJ abilities. His discography so far, concentrated on Adam X’s legendary Sonic Groove imprint and his own K209 and MANHIGH imprints, amongst others, keeps step with his wide-ranging tastes, moving across the spectrum of hard-edged, aggressively modern techno.

With Shatterproof, his long-germinating debut album for MANHIGH, he offers for the first time “his unified vision in extended format, a varied exploration into the outer limits of the genre.” The LP is said to unify and strengthen the work of an artist whose legacy is already assured.
