Premiere: Stream a Track From Flord King’s Debut Solo EP

On August 7, Lyssna will release Flord King‘s debut solo EP, Klassisk.

Klassisk follows two releases on Lyssna, both alongside Adam Strömstedt—one a collaborative effort and one a split EP—and a split EP alongside ishi vu on Junk Yard Connections. For his first solo outing, Flord drops four deep and jazzy cuts built on classy grooves and a matured sense of restraint. Each track unfolds patiently, providing the perfect building blocks for long and winding DJ sets.

In support of the forthcoming release, Lyssna and Flord have offered up a full stream of “El Klassiko,” the EP’s deep and rolling opening cut. You can stream “El Klassiko” below, with the EP available for pre-order here.

Federico Molinari Next on Cure

Cure Music‘s fifth release comes from Federico Molinari.

Fans of funky, minimal basslines will already be familiar with Molinari. The much loved Argentinian DJ-producer is an XLR8R favourite, with releases on Melisma, Apollonia, and Epilog, although the majority of his cuts have arrived on Oslo, the imprint he co-founded as “a way to express their own ideas of electronic music.” Now based in Berlin, having moved there from Mannheim in 2013, he also has an upcoming EP Melliflow.

Hipnoise will be Molinari’s debut on the label and is scheduled for September release, with clips available below.

Podcast 500: Derrick Carter

It’s with great honor—and, to be honest, quite a lot of pleasure—that today we release the 500th XLR8R podcast. The XLR8R podcast series began back in 2006 with an hour-long mix from LA-based record label Plug Research, featuring cuts from label artists and future XLR8R favorites Flying Lotus, Headset, and Nobody. Since then, a new podcast has dropped nearly every week from artists across the electronic music spectrum; you’ll find rising stars—Nicolas Jaar, Cooly G, and Ikonika all contributed standout mixes relatively early in their careers—sitting next to scene pioneers such as DJ Rashad & DJ SpinThe Orb, Soulwax, Laurent Garnier, Modeselektor, and the Gaslamp Killer, and a handful of XLR8R‘s favorite labels, including Thrill Jockey, Ghostly International, Anticon, and Palette. Even though XLR8R is now read throughout the world, it started and grew its readership in the US—XLR8R was founded in Seattle in 1993—so for our 500th podcast, we enlisted one of America’s finest DJs, Chicago’s Derrick Carter.

To give you an idea of the sort of clout Derrick Carter holds within dance music, Omni A.M.‘s Adam Collins and Halo Varga—two highly-respected US house artists who we recently profiled for In The Studio and Get Familiar, respectively—when asked who their biggest influence was, both unequivocally answered Derrick Carter. Look outside the US and Derrick’s influence extends and—if it’s even possible—grows. Simply put, if house music and its numerous strains are anything of an interest to you, then Derrick Carter would be on your favorite artist’s favorite artist list. Even with this amount of respect and adoration, however, Derrick keeps a low profile and rarely does press or interviews, which makes his contribution to the 500th podcast all the more enticing.

Keeping in line with his ethos, we’ll let the music do the talking on this one; press play and ring in our 500th podcast with two hours of Derrick Carter.

Portico Quartet Share Video From Forthcoming Album

Portico Quartet will release their latest album, Art In The Age Of Automation, on Gondwana Records on August 25.

Art In The Age Of Automation will be the Mercury Prize-nominated band’s fourth studio album—their first for Manchester’s Gondwana Records—following on from their 2007 debut, Knee-Deep in the North Sea, 2010’s Isla, and the 2012 LP, Portico Quartet. The new album presents an eagerly anticipated return to a four piece, following a brief stint as the three-piece Portico.

Recorded at Fish Factory Studios in London, Art In The Age Of Automation finds the band revisiting the cinematic sound world they explored on Portico Quartet, mixing electronic and ambient textures with floating saxophone and a mixture of live and electronic drums.

You can pre-order the album here, with the first official video, a hypnotizing moving art piece for “A Luminous Beam,” streaming in full via the player above.

Hemlock to Release New Hodge EP

He last appeared on Hemlock with 2015’s double EP HEK025, and has since produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated EPs and collaborations for Livity Sound, Berceuse Heroique, and No Corner.

Into The Factory Festival Cancelled Due to Licence Restrictions

Organisers of Swedish festival Into The Factory have cancelled the event after failing to secure the necessary licences.

The event, which is run by Music Goes Further, was scheduled to take place in Sweden from August 12 to 14, with a lineup featuring some of the biggest names in house and techno. Organisers behind the event made the following statement today:

With much pain in our hearts, we have to announce that the electronic music festival Into the Factory has to be cancelled.

For seven months, the festival organisation Music Goes Further has worked to get the police on its side and dutifully applied for the permits needed to conduct a public event. However, the festival that would have taken place in Stora Vika, Nynäshamn on 10-12 August, cannot be produced as the police did not approve the event in a damning report with references that include, among other things, that “the risk of falls or alternatively climbing walls in combination with drug consumption where there is the idea of flying from heights does not seem strange… “. Quite a remark.

Ever since the start of the project, we have had tight dialogues with all the parties involved. There has been a continuous process where all other authorities have been very positive about the festival and had the impression that the event was a good thing for the area. The organisers had also experienced their contacts with police as positive in the conversations and meetings they have had, so this comes as an unpleasant surprise. An event like this usually takes 1-2 months to get approved, but Music Goes Further had been waiting a lot longer to get the official’s authorization and permits for some reason.

This is undoubtedly one of the worst situations in my 20 years in the industry. My colleagues and I are crushed over this. With all the energy and power that this process has taken from me, I really feel that this is my last attempt to make a festival in Sweden ever,” says Mattias Hedlund, Music Goes Further director. “We have put our hearts and souls in this project which makes the cancellation much worse,” he continues.

In the rejection report issued by the police, references are made to the 2016 drug-related arrests in Dalhalla, when sister festival Into the Valley was conducted. It should be noted that throughout our history organising events we’ve had zero crimes, zero violence and zero sexual abuses in all our productions. In the statement, the police believe that visitors may die of overdoses or be injured by climbing and jumping from the festival’s tall buildings.

Extract from police rejection report:

“Along the walls there are step-like objects as well as a comprehensive system of wall studs, making climbing along the walls easily accessible. Getting up to thresh yards uphill is no big trouble for those motivated to climb. The risk of falling casualties, alternatively climbing in combination with drug effects, where the idea of flying from heights does not seem quite strange, causing the local police area to see enormous security risks in the design of the buildings regarding climbing opportunities to high heights.”

In the decision, the police also write:

“Furthermore, unreasonable police resources would be required to ensure an acceptable level of security.”

“The electronic music scene is growing very fast and we have many amazingly talented producers here. People often talk about Sweden as a music hub, with all the music that is created and exported from here. But I really think it’s strange that if music and music exports are so important for this country, how can it be impossible to conduct a music festival?” states Mattias Hedlund, Music Goes Further.

Into the Factory has received great attention in international press, as well as the Swedish scene, Stockholm as a city and the festival site in Stora Vika, which was really attractive to guests. Prestigious publications such as British newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph list Into the Factory as one of the best music festivals in Europe, Condé Nast Traveler lists it as one of the best in the world, Italian Vogue and British BBC also recommend the festival, as well as a host of other major media outlets.

As planning for the next festival is a long time away, and payments to artists and agencies, staff, suppliers, production and marketing have already been carried out to a large extent, there have been therefore huge costs for Into the Factory. With lost revenue from a festival that will not take place, Music Goes Further is put into a very difficult economic situation. Visitors who have already bought tickets will be offered compensation in the form of a replacement event during the intended festival weekend, tickets to Into the Castle in Cape Town next January 2018 and tickets for Into the Valley in Rummu 2018.

John Barera & Will Martin Share First Single From Sophomore Album

On September 22, John BareraWill Martin will drop their second album, Proceed to the Root, via 2MR.

Proceed to the Root follows 2014’s Graceless album and a string of EPs on Argot, Episodes, Just Jack, Basement Floor Records, and Zakim. Although more than a handful of those EPs were released after Graceless, they were all recorded before it, meaning Procced to the Root will be the first recorded output to be released since Graceless, marking the next chapter for the pair. Musically, the album features everything we’ve come to love from the duo; namely, tough classic house and techno, soulful electronics, and sprinklings of dub.

Ahead of the release, 2MR have shared a full stream of the first single, “Polaris,” available below.

Hype Williams Prep New LP

Hype Williams will release a new LP this August, titled Rainbow Edition.

Hype Williams is the experimental music/art project of UK-born artist Dean Blunt and Russian-born artist Inga Copeland between 2007 and 2012, though the group’s lineup has remained obscure, and a variety of other names have also been invoked as members.

The last Hype Williams recordings landed in 2011, namely Hippos in Tanks for One Nation. After this, Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland carried on recording through 2012 under their own names (while continuing to use the HW name to fulfil existing live commitments). They are both no longer involved, and any Hype Williams releases you’ve since heard are “fake,” according to Big Dada, the label.
