Kompakt Reveals Total 17 Compilation

Kompakt will release the 17th Total compilation this coming September.

Inaugurated in the summer of 1999, the Total compilation series happens to be only slightly older than the 21st century itself—which makes Total 17 the “last instalment before the series hits adulthood,” the label explains. And, in fitting form, this latest compilation “exudes a playful abundance few other compilations can match,” the label adds.

Like other Total compilations before it, Total 17 is first and foremost a perfect opportunity to delve into our recent back catalogue, with the tracks from Laurent Garnier, The Orb, Kölsch, Vermont, T.Raumschmiere, Patrice Bäumel, Danny Daze, and more featuring within the 17 previously released tracks. These are accompanied by eight exclusives—among them a handful of collaborations, including Reinhard Voigt and Wolfgang Voigt as Voigt & Voigt, Tobias Thomas and Michael Mayer as Thomas/Mayer, and Superpitcher alongside Fantastic Twins as Saschienne’s Julienne Dessagne.

Man Duo ‘What If It Falls’ (Ali Renault remix)

Man Duo is the second coming of Jaakko Eino Kalevi and Long-Sam: cherished producers and good friends from Helsinki whose 2012 debut Amateurs de Vérité refracted outsider electronics through the prism of psychedelic folk. Now the pair returns with a new name and a new album, Orbit, that takes the exotic pop we’ve come to associate with both artists far beyond the dancefloor and out into the cosmos.

“Man Duo sounds more like a band instead of just two individuals,” says Sami Toroi (a.k.a Long-Sam). “We used to go by the name Jaakko Eino Kalevi & Long-Sam, now it’s easier to see this as a unit of its own without confusing it with our solo careers.”

Written and recorded together at Sami’s place in Helsinki and Jaakko’s Berlin studio during 2016, Orbit plots a serene course through styles close to the duo’s hearts. Across eight tracks, Jaakko and Sami zone in on krautrock, funk, electro, and spaced-out cyber-ballads, executing each with characteristic elan and tunefulness. In fine voice throughout, the pair’s lyrics—sung in English, Finnish and Italian—draw on the absurdities of life and love in the modern world.

“It’s really an equal effort when it comes to composing and performing. We both do everything and it all happens with great understanding,” says Sami. “The only exceptions are that I mix the tracks and play most of the guitar parts, and whenever a saxophone is needed, it’s Jaakko who’ll play that.”

Orbit is released by Kaya Kaya in the UK and Ireland and by Solina Records in the rest of the world—while electro titan Ali Renault has reworks “What if It Falls” into a muscular late-night prowler. Download it now via the WeTransfer button below.

Carl Craig Next Up in Ask the Experts; Send Him Your Questions Now

With our Ask The ExpertsMaceo Plex feature still in the works, we’re already moving on to announce our next one—this time with Carl Craig, a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ, and an ambassador for his native Detroit.

Craig released his first track in 1989 on a Virgin UK compilation album, before two singles followed on labels run by his first collaborator, Derrick May. After a series of ambitious releases for his co-owned Retroactive imprint, in 1991 Craig launched his record label Planet E, with the groundbreaking EP 4 Jazz Funk Classics, under his alias 69. Planet E turned 20 in 2011 and Craig celebrated the label’s history by taking the label artists and collaborators on a world tour for the first time in the label’s history. As well as this, Planet E invited friends of the label including Luciano, Kirk Degiorgio, Loco Dice and more—to pick their favorite Planet E track to remix and re-release.

Looking back now to Craig’s early releases from 1989-1992, one can see how much the wild variety found in his early music set the groundwork for his diverse career. He’s fortunate to serve as an inspiration and influence to countless artists in the underground electronic music scene. His 1992 Innerzone Orchestra cut “Bug in the Bassbin” was credited as the spark that inspired the evolution of drum & bass. In typical Craig fashion, “Bug…” continued to develop, morphing into a live jazz composition in 1996. In turn, those experiments laid the ground for Craig to incorporate jazz elements onto his 1999 I.O. album Programmed. Then in the ’00s, Craig explored jazz further still as a producer on the albums The Detroit Experiment and Rebirth (2009) for legendary Detroit Jazz collective, Tribe. This is but one example of Craig’s continually evolving exploration of sound.

Craig’s prolific nature is reflected in the many recording projects he has used throughout his career including 69, BFC, C2, Innerzone Orchestra, No Boundaries, Psyche, Paperclip People, and Tres Demented. This rotating cast of aliases has enabled him to continually explore new directions through a long succession of full-length albums, mix CDs, and singles.

Craig’s interest in collaboration continually grows and is realized in full with Versus, one of his boldest endeavors to date. For Versus, Craig merges techno and classical music, opening himself up to working in a new format by collaborating with pianist Francesco Tristano, French orchestra Les Siècles, conductor Francois Xavier Roth, and Moritz Von Oswald. Inspired by well-received performances in concerts halls in Paris, Milan, and Germany in 2008, Craig started the process of developing the project into an album, which features eight of his techno masterpieces recomposed into classical pieces.

Craig also performs as a trio alongside Von Oswald and Tristano. His occasional appearances with the electronic collective jam band Narod Niki, alongside Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Richie Hawtin, Zip and others, led to him appearing in part live / part DJ gigs with Luciano. Additionally, he’s taken to bringing keyboardists like Mike Banks (UR), Amp Fiddler, and Francesco Tristano into the DJ booth with him for special one-off gigs. Outside of this, Craig also continues to be one of the most sought-after remixers in the world.

In the same way that he likes to make tracks he’s remixing his own, Craig’s commitment to his home in Detroit is also something very personal. After launching a festival to rival that of any in Europe with the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 (now entitled Movement, which today he still has a strong role in). This commitment to Detroit music also extends to how his Planet E family of labels is run. Not only has it given a home to a wide range of Detroit-based artists, it has also been serving as a distributor for Detroit imprints including Derrick May’s Transmat and Stacey Pullen‘s Black Flag. In 2014, Carl Craig also began a new event concept Detroit Love, designed to bring together and support the sounds of Detroit and take a little of the techno brotherhood to clubs and festivals the world over.

Now is your chance to ask Carl Craig your questions on music, life, or anything you wish. All questions should be sent to [email protected] with “Carl Craig” as the subject line. We’ll pass them along to Carl who will then select his favorites, and soon we’ll publish his answers.

On Sunday, August 13, Carl Craig will join Red Bull Music Academy for a session and club night in Glasgow. More information here.

Download a Groovy Mix From DSC

DSC has shared a new mix ahead of the second release on his new Holding Hands imprint.

The Furnace/Sorcerer follows the acclaimed first release, Far Reaching/Too Hard—XLR8R premiered a cut from that release here—with two more dancefloor weapons. The opening cut on the EP, “Furnace,” was inspired by Nicolas Lutz’s warm-up set for Ricardo Villalobos at Fabric a couple years back, a break-beat cut with wall shaking bass. The b-side, “The Sorcerer,” is a collaboration with good friend Guava, a swinging track made up largely of recorded percussion and vocals at DSC’s studio in South London. Li8ke with the first release, both cuts are built purely for the club and big soundsystems.

In support of the release, DSC has offered up a new mix for download. Across 75 enticing minutes, DSC expertly teases out groove after groove, layering the cuts with surgical precision.

You can download the mix via WeTransfer below, with the EP available for pre-order here.

Prism House Shares a Shimmering Cut From New LP

Prism House has shared the first taste of his forthcoming album, Momentum, which is set to drop on Grind Select on September 8.

Over the years, Prism House (the ongoing electronic A/V project led by New York-based composer Brian Wenner) has been a regular fixture on XLR8R‘s pages, providing stunning cuts via our much-loved downloads section. For his latest full-length, Wenner aims to focus on a more meditative approach with a collection of evolving ambient cuts that retain a certain dancefloor-like energy—Wenner states he had a “desire to create something beautiful while also tearing apart at the seams.”

In support of the forthcoming release and to give a taste of the album, Wenner and Grind Select have passed over a full stream of album cut “Voice of Reason,” available to stream via the player below.

XLR8R’s Top 10 Downloads of June

Every day, barring weekends, XLR8R works with countless artists and labels to promote releases, break artists, and to provide our readers with a fresh dose of music through the ever-popular downloads section. A constant supply of forward-thinking tunes are released from all corners of the sonic spectrum, from bass-heavy house to industrial techno, sun-tinged beats, and everything in between. We then tabulate the download numbers every month and announce the 10 most popular tracks from the month prior. Now that we are midway through July, it’s time to look back to June and its most popular tracks.

In June, the top 10 was almost exclusively dominated by original cuts, with Alci‘s “Eleven” proving to be the most popular cut ahead of the sole remix, a bootleg of Bonobo‘s “Break Apart” by Indian producer Lukan. André Baum’s debut track followed close by, with Chihei Hatakeyama‘s stunning ambient cut “Sad Ocean” and Eliot Lipp‘s beat-driven “I Told Ya” rounding out the top five.
