After a five-year hiatus to concentrate on professional cycling, Sheffield artist Nyra has returned. The next three months will see him start his own new label, put out three EPs and head back out on the road again.
Nyra (a.k.a Ryan Davis), first emerged in 2008. In the years after he soon amassed a discography of no frills house and techno that was expertly designed to turbocharge dance floors. At the same time, he founded influential Sheffield warehouse party Downlo at Dan Sane and welcomed a number of artists from Marcel Fengler to Norman Nodge to Ben UFO and Baby Ford. That party paved the way for the city’s now celebrated Hope Works venue, whilst Ryan himself went on to pursue a career in professional cycling.
Now he launches Canoe, a new label which aims to “put out timeless music. Nothing that follows trends, just stuff that does, and always will sound great, from wherever that may be on the sonic spectrum,” Davis says. “I love, make, and play everything from house to techno to disco to jungle and just go with whatever I feel like in the studio on that particular day. These are all sounds I have soaked up into my own style over the years.“
The label kicks off with a Nyra EP from this “Save Lite” is taken—and can be downloaded via the WeTransfer button below.
Starting in 2011, Livity Sound quickly grew to become one of the leading labels in the UK dance music underground. Combining the legacy of Bristol’s sound system culture and the futuristic visions of techno, the label forged a unique voice in the contemporary musical landscape. Initially based around a core group of producers, Livity Sound has since grown and diversified, expanding its outlook and roster while retaining its ideals of innovative, forward-thinking dance music.
As the label head, Peverelist is core to this vision. Livity Sound builds on his pioneering work with Punch Drunk Records and releases for esteemed labels such as Skull Disco, Hessle Audio, and Tectonic.
The Tessellations LP is his first long player for Livity Sound, and is described by the label as “a succinct nine tracks demonstrating the breadth of his work and scope of his influences through a snapshot of productions from the last two years.”

Hi-Five is back, following a lengthy hiatus. For those of you that don’t know, the structure of this feature is as follows: the selected artist, on this occasion Felipe Valenzuela, must delve into their fountain of musical knowledge to choose five records (or more if they so wish) for a certain occasion or moment—or with a certain theme, so to speak. It really is that simple.
Up first in this feature’s continuation is Felipe Valenzuela, a leading and widely known DJ, producer, and label head. Valenzuela was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, and discovered an instant affiliation with electronic music: in 2002, he had begun touring as a DJ; by 2006 he was beginning to release his own music. His releases since then have landed on some of the scene’s most established imprints, and his tracks supported by some of the world’s leading selectors.
Nowadays, Valenzuela is based in Berlin and co-runs two labels, namely Cure Music and Melisma. The former was set up with Momo Trosman and tackles a “more futuristic sound”; while Dani Casarano is his partner in the latter. Alongside his label responsibilities, he continues to DJ in Europe and beyond, having also boasted a residency at Berlin’s Club Der Visionaere. He plans, soon, to commit more time to the studio.
His theme for this week, he explains, is quite simple: classic electronic warm-up tracks, or records to listen to through headphones during a walk.
XLR8R is co-hosting a party with Cure Music and Melisma where Felipe Valenzuela will be playing on June 16 in Barcelona, Spain. Also included in the lineup are Afriqua, Topper, Alberto?, and more. More information and tickets can be found here.
Random Factor “Broken Mirror” [20:20 vision; Playhouse; Brigue Rouge]
This track made by Random Factor in 1998 is definitely one of my endless favorites. The quality of the production is amazing and it is definitely more like a song than something for the club. I’ve been listening to it ever since it was released by 20:20 Vision and then Playhouse with different remixes. Later on, it was released by Brique Rouge but the original was always the best.
Melchior Productions “Zukunft in English” [Playhouse]
I first met Thomas Melchior in Chile, around 2003 or 2004, and he was bringing out this album called The Meaning on the label Playhouse. Since then, this track has been one of my all time favorites to listen in all of the electronic music genres. It’s a perfect track for listening to on a walk.
Smyglyssna “White Walls” [Background]
Lately, I have begun paying more and more attention to the records on Background Recordings—especially for situations like Club der Visionaere or after-hours, etc. I think this track from the Sight Is Something More Than All Things Seen EP has a unique sensitivity mixed with a weirdness that I really enjoy.
Definitely something on my tracklist.
Akufen “Unexpected Guest” [Perlon]
This is one of the most mysterious and elegant tracks you’ll likely ever hear. In my opinion, this track is perfect for hanging out with your headphones on the street, a soundtrack for those moments of confusion and intrigue in your daily life. It was released on the Perlon label’s Superlongevity 2 compilation, among many other fantastic tracks.
Ricardo Villalobos “Theogenese” [Playhouse]
Something from Ricardo Villalobos‘ Alcachofa tracks LP was always going to be included in the list. This particular track brings me a positive feeling every time I listen to it and never bores me. It is a certainly on any playlist of mine.
On June 9, Ninja Tune imprint Ahead Of Our Time—which is Coldcut’s re-launched label for “free expression and experimentation”—will release contemporary pianist James Heather’s Modulations: EP 1.
Comprised of seven minimalist pieces, Modulations: EP 1 is the first in a series of EPs and will be followed by an album in the summer that will present a more unified body of conceptual work—compared to Modulations: EP 1, which was written and recorded at different times and in various headspaces.
According to the press release, the tracks on the EP “ebb and flow, slowly enveloping the listener in a subtly subliminal fashion,” and from the stream of “Empire Sounds” below, that description couldn’t be more apt.
You can stream “Empire Sounds” in full via the player below, with the full EP available next month.
The brainchild of Robin Appleton—founder of underground cult psych/prog band Cranium Pie and Tronsonic, unique tape-sampled virtual synthesizers—Ai (standing for Audio intelligence) is a collective of friends and collaborators, including Will White of Propellerheads, who contributed ideas and new mixes to Paradigmension, a 17-track album of electronic soul. The hard-to-define release was originally conceived as a soundtrack project for TV and film and was built around Appleton’s home-made Tronsonic samples, as he explains:
“I’ve always loved the sound of synths recorded onto tape—early Kraftwerk LPs, Radiophonic Workshop, 50s sci-fi b-movie fx. Somehow tape can inject a kind of imperfect human element into otherwise ‘perfect’ electronic sound/music. For me, this is the ingredient I try to inject into my music to bridge the gap between man and machines.”
Paradigmension will drop digitally on June 23 via Blurred Recordings and ahead of the release, you can download LP cut “So High – I Can Reach The Sun” via WeTransfer below.
