Weekly Selections: Comunité 2017, Faster at Cyclone, Ion Ludwig at Spybar

This weekend marks the 2017 edition of Comunité, a festival that has quickly solidified its spot at the forefront of cutting-edge electronic music events in Mexico. Returning to Cenote dos Palmas along the beaches of Tulum, Comunité organizers have locked in an incredibly impressive lineup for this year’s edition–with highlights including Mexican up-and-comer and last week’s XLR8R Podcast contributor Leo Leal, the Montreal-based deep house master Project Pablo, Sonja Moonear, and Thomas Melchoir. Make sure not to miss the debut of Omar-S’ live set, or the marathon of micro-house grooves from yoyaku’s Varhat and Melliflow boss Vera from 5-10AM on Saturday. The Giegling showcase late on Saturday morning should be the perfect way to close out a long night of superb sounds from the best of the best in underground music. Tickets are no longer available online, but a limited number will be for sale at the door. For more information, head to the event’s Facebook page.

On Friday night in Los Angeles, Cyclone will return to kick off 2017 with another heavyweight in the Romanian minimal scene, the SUNRISE affiliated Faster. Known for his top-notch extended sets at Sunwaves as well as his contributions to Ruere Records, the proper warehouse event on Friday will mark the Romanian selector’s LA debut. The evening will also feature performances from Sece of Vatos Locos, as well as LA-based Lessizmore contributor Clovis. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door, but you can still grab yours online here.

Friday night in Chicago marks the return of the house and techno oriented event series Tied Takeover. For their first edition of 2017, the series will invade the nightclub Spybar for an evening with semi-legendary Perlon mainstay Ion Ludwig. More information and tickets can be found here.

Watch a Tutorial on the E-MU 4XT and the Ensoniq EPS

In the final installment of ‘Under The Radar,’ the four-part web series by Point Blank, R&S Records A&R and Point Blank instructor Sam Willis (a.k.a Primitive World) turns to two more iconic pieces of hardware, the E-MU 4XT & the Ensoniq EPS.

Premiere: Hear a Track from Julia Govor’s Latest EP

NYC-based Russian DJ and producer Julia Govor is set to release her latest EP, titled 5000 Moments, on Budapest label Akkult.

Govor’s 5000 Moments will be the third release for the fledging label, following on from label head Andras Toth‘s Reallyshould and a label VA from Li, Kaitaro, Ilario Liburni, and Andras Toth & Bepo—both of which sold out. Akkult’s mission statement is to release vinyl-only records of “soulful, hypnotic techno and tribalistic, shamanistic house music,” a style 5000 Moments presents beautifully.

Govor’s three originals show why the rising Russian artist is fast becoming one of the foremost names to watch in techno, from the deep and driving title track to the spaced-out grooves of “Mathew I Got Your Shakers”—it’s a powerful EP made all the more memorable by a trippy rethink by Andras Toth.

5000 Moments can be pre-orded over at Decks ahead of its January 16 release date, and in the meantime, you can stream Andras Toth’s rethink of “Mathew I Got Your Shakers” in full via the player above.

Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann Ready First Studio Collaboration in 10 Years

Berghain residents Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann will release a new collaborative EP.

The Phantom Studies EP will be their first studio collaboration in ten years—following on from 2006’s Dawning and 2007’s Scenario. It will also mark one hundredth O-TON 12″ EP release.

On the extended, 40-minute 2×12″ EP, Dettmann and Klock “parlay their deep personal alliance and musical repertoire through emphasis on new functional techno as much as hypnotic, melodic and soulful music by thinking outside the box.”

The seven new, original tracks are said to “reflect these attributions by communicating to the needs and expectations of both DJs and home audio listeners, but not neglecting one over the other.”

Tracklisting 12” / Digital:

A1. Phantom Studies
B1. No One Around
B2. The Room
C1. Prophet Man
C2. Bad Boy
D1. The World Tonight
D2. The Tenant

Phantom Studies EP is scheduled for January 27 release.

SoundCloud Posts €51m Loss for 2015

The latest SoundCloud finance report has revealed a €51m loss for 2015.

The company’s revenues have actually risen 21.6% to €21.1m, but the losses have, too.

In the Director’s report, it was explained by co-founder Alexander Ljung that the company may need to raise additional funds if the new subscription service doesn’t succeed. “Whilst the directors believe that [SoundCloud] will have sufficient funds to continue to meet its liabilities through 31 December 2017,”Ljung writes, “the risks and uncertainties may cause the company to run out of cash earlier than that date, and would require [SoundCloud] to raise additional funds which are not currently planned.”

This news comes after it was revealed that Google is supposedly considering buying Soundcloud.

Sonic explorer Bruce will release a new EP on Hemlock.

Gearbox Records Unveils New Turntable

Gearbox Records is raising money for a new turntable via Kickstarter.

The London-based company’s new venture is the Gearbox Automatic turntable—a vinyl player that will bring together vinyl and digital streaming without compromising on quality, a system they describe as “future analogue.” Users will be able to link the records they play to their Spotify account via bluetooth, allowing them to build streamable playlists from their records. The Gearbox Automatic is also complete with built-in vacuum tube tone, an Audio-Technica cartridge and an analogue to digital convertor.

At this point, the company is ready to manufacture and would expect to deliver turntables in December 2017; however, the project’s success hangs on its ability to raise £85,000 via a Kickstarter campaign before February 1.

For more information, head to the Kickstarter page.
